  • Kat and I learned how to preserve a shark jaw this week and we wanted to share our experience with you. Shark Jaw removal is a difficult process and we don't condone it for trophy purposes. However, this jaw was salvaged in the early 70's by a dive shop near Cocoa Beach, Florida. We acquired the jaw after it spent 50 years collecting dust. And we hope to preserve it for use in our educational programs. The jaw is incredibly large and may be largest Mako shark ever caught fishing in Florida.
    Through exploring, Fossil hunting, and artifact hunting, we can make a physical connection to the history around us. We are passionate about that connection and want to share it with others. If you value this content, consider supporting us on Patreon so we can help others “dig science.”

    We plan on hunting for a diversity of fossils all throughout the US this year with other fossil hunters such as @Paleocris, @Wildkyle, Everdayimshoveling, Ancient Artworks, Shark Teeth and Fossils and Bone Valley Collections. We hope to find beautiful Megalodon teeth, gems and minerals, great white shark teeth, artifacts, arrowheads, and megafauna creatures like mammoths and mastodons. We will also include videos on how to fossil hunt in Florida and explore discussions on some of our favorite topics in paleontology, archeology, and geology!

    Your channel is the best! I'm not a kid, rather someone who majored in Anthropology and had dreams of becoming a Paleontologist but ended up in an entirely different field. I used to have an extensive bone collection, with everything from whale bones to a human tibia fragment found in a river. All of that was lost in a house move and I have always wondered where it ended up. Anyhow, thank you for all the excellent content.

    if the skull/bones are fresh-ish, put the part in a covered rubber tub, and fill with maggots, they will cleans the part until it's pearly white. No chemicals or extreme cleaning necessary.

    Question on this Shark Jaw! Originally, how was the jaw dried and preserved so that the teeth didn't fall out? (50 years ago? if you know!) Sun Dried, Salt or Borax packed? I've used Borax powder or Laundry detergent in the past to dry pheasant wings etc. Recently (here in Brazil) I caught a 200lb Maiko and saved the jaw & teeth, planning to mount it. Unfortunately, not having a good place to work etc., I decided to boil it in salted water, thinking I could easily take off the meat and skin, but didn't realize that the teeth are embedded in the cartilage, not the bone, which was just boiling down to a cartilage broth.. Most of the teeth fell out and what was left were smaller teeth still embedded in the cartilage. I ended up saving the teeth to make something later, but threw out the toothless jaw bones! If you have a tip for best way to preserve teeth in place and still getting the flesh off, please let me know! THANKS!

    Guys, this was very interesting and educational to watch! However, it does not appear to me that the stretching/remolding worked... Take a look at the lower jaw teeth in the center at 2:28 (where it’s pointed out how straight and flexible the jaw has become) and compare that to the finished product at 13:35. The teeth are completely jammed together again. 😕

    For the very large MEG teeth, 5 - 6 in, has anyone estimated the size of the shark?

    • @DiggingScience
      @DiggingScience  3 роки тому

      Yes, conservative estimates for a shark with 6" teeth are around 45 ft. Maximum estimates would be around 60 ft.

    Sweet baby gsus. It’s a shame that people catch and kill sharks. Most useless thing I’ve ever heard of, I know you guys didn’t do it. I mean the shark fishing contests where tons of boats go out and they all keep the biggest sharks of the day just to have a crane hoist it up on the dock......humans.....kill, trash, take ,take , take....we don’t deserve the earth tbh...judgment soon come
