I told my mom about this today and I checked the ice dispenser at my home and it was filled with dirt, residue, and some fungi and I was shocked, We cleaned the ice dispenser with a cloth with bleach and the after results where better than before

I work in food service we clean our soda dispensers daily. The Coke Free Style machines come with special brushes & instructions. We were given a demonstration on how to clean it correctly. I'm surprised how much sugar & dye builds up in day. Ever since I clean my water dispenser at home regularly & my shower heads. Ppl who have soft or hard water should clean theirs even more often especially if you don't have a water treatment system.
And some restaurants never clean them 🤮🤮🤮 and health and safety rarely check it. Disgusting

I have one of those fridges as well and before I saw this story air, I found what looked like a blackish-brownish like gunk around the water dispenser area a couple days ago. It was disgusting, my mom immediately started cleaning it after I showed her the nasty spot

There was a news reporter in Houston, Texas who would go out to investigate the various restaurants that the health department should have already checked. One of my favorite reports that he would give us was "SLIME IN THE ICE MACHINE" along with a cute jingle. Otherwise I would never think about gunk growing in my home ice maker. 😢

I started cleaning my dispenser regularly when I started to realize there was an odor and it was gross when I checked with a flash light
The ice in my freezer smells like fish.
I’m all about ice cold drinks and we had a refrigerator that made ice and cold water. One day I went to get ice and somehow the lever got stuck and the ice just came pouring out onto the floor. I then notice a few black spots coming out then they turn into bigger black and green spots. It was all mold. The floor was covered in ice cubes and mold.
I stop using that ice maker and just made ice cubes the old fashion water, ice trays. It still makes me sick to thing that maybe I was drinking that dirty nasty mold and not realizing it.
Now I have a countertop ice maker.
I’ve always kept the ice maker part of the fridge off and disconnected the water drianline…. It’s just always seemed unsanitary to me. Glad I’m not crazy like my family thinks lol

A while back I was getting ice and water from the refrigerator dispenser and somehow the level got stuck and a stream of ice started pouring out non-stop. After 30 second I notice black fury lent coming out. As the ice kept flowing out I realized it was black mold. There laying in my floor was ice mixed with black mold melting together. I was so disgusted I threw that refrigerator out.
Oh godd...that's so scary because liek you drink it before and then all of a sudden that happens and it makes you sick to your stomach

I’m a tech, actually the problem is that the seals that the ice comes out of. The flapper is weak or the sealing is compromised. Warm and cold meet. Use a steamer, but be careful. Steam clean only the black mold. Or longer brush with soap and water. Use anti-spray or mold killer.

Of course that thing is gross. I have the same fridge as the First Lady, left by the previous homeowners and I want no parts of the ice dispenser. I almost took the whole fridge apart maticulously cleaning everything but couldn’t take that portion a part. I threatened to put bleach in there but knew better and just decided to walk away before I break…something else.
