Initially I avoided it because of the length. I chose to watch a couple of vids in the 4-8 minute range. Both were informative though one was borderline train wreck! Finally I clicked this one. Wow, very impressed with the narration, editing and quality of the informative content overall.

Thank you SO much for posting this! We developed a pinhole leak in the water tube for the ice cube maker a few inches up from the connection and your instructions enabled me to cut off the few inches, reassemble the outer plastic sleeve and inner metal one properly in order to screw it back into place with no leaks. Saved me a lot of money for something simple! :D

Very well produced and edited video. Clear and concise. I might double valve my install since I'm coming off my main in the basement and run copper thru the floor and another valve on the floor behind the refrigerator then to plastic. Also, anywhere I'm running a waterline around wood, I dab some Terminate (Copper naphthenate) on the wood and thru the drilled hole just in case of a leak to help keep dry-rot from starting.

Every time I buy these kids they come with the copper crush sleeves instead of plastic which makes a lot of sense because it does cut through the plastic tubing rather it has a inserted backup anti crush sleeve in the tube and or not they are very prone to leaking right at the pinched joint. I did not know that the plastic couplers/mushrooms are available until I saw this video. "Good job this was a good JUAN"

I worked for a plumbing company sub-contracted by an insurance flood and fire restoration firm. Top floods were caused by frozen pipes. washing machine supplies bursting and plastic fridge lines with metal ferrules or piercing saddle valves.

5 minutes into this video and I already have to say it is excellent pointing out so many helpful tips Love the cardboard for in front of the refrigerator I used to do kitchen remodeling and we used to actually carry with us a quarter inch piece of 30x30 plywood just for such appliance movement and installation or removal.

Repair for me - puddle on the kitchen floor. This video is very clear, gave several options (yes!). Well done. Frozen shutoff valve to the refrigerator water line forced me to switch to plastic on the outlet side of the filter, which then allowed me to clamp the line instead of shutting the main water valve off. It was split at the ferrule where the water line from the back connects to the one going up the door.

This video should required watching for anyone doing a how to video, excellent explanations of all the little things that can trip you up on what looks like a simple install.
Only question I still have is “how DO you cut plastic tubing to get a perfectly square end so push fittings don’t leak?”
With a dedicated plastic pipe cutter, those always cut straight ;)

Great. I got exactly what I needed and installed my water line from the house pipe to the inlet of my refrigerator. I have got both the sleeve and brass ferrule and didn't know which one or both to use. I learned from the video and used the plastic sleeve, it works very well for me. Thank you very much.
Thank you for the DIY know-how. I have had to fix my mother in law's home, which used a saddle valve that leaked all over. I am glad that someone is showing people how to do things the right way.

Thanks so much for posting this video. I recently had a leaking waterline that I had to replace. I went to 2 different hardware stores and they weren't able to explain how to prevent the brass ferrule frome leaking. They only offered this as an option. After watching your video I decided to try the plastic fitting as you recommended and it worked the very first try.

I want to thank you for explaining in detail on how to install the lines. Exactly 30 years ago today I got married tomorrow is exactly 4years since husband passed away. He was a mechanic an I a house wife but know some on fixing things up. Now I'm going through my 3 time with cancer an this time around I'm not thinking correctly. Few days ago I received that news. I live by myself an mostly I'm doing all the fixer uppers. Not much of income so instead of buying expensive products I look an see what I have then buy what's needed. When you explain different ways an you did a one hell of a job, I am most confident that this should not be that difficult. You are amazing.

I wouldn't use the first ice cubes that are made though, in case there is any contaminates in the water. Make a few batches first.

NEVER use plastic lines. Had one that developed a pin size hole and leaked water into my neighbor’s condo unit downstairs. I’ve heard others complain about the same thing. Pay the extra cost for the braided stainless steel line.

A braided stainless steel line is only stainless steel on the outside! It's still a plastic line on the inside!!
If you stand by your statement of never using a plastic line...you're basically telling people to use a copper line which can be even more problematic by kinking and/or corroding.

Braided hose provides better heat dissipation and better flow, which is important when choosing performance car parts. Additionally, braided lines are able to withstand more pressure than rubber lines.”
The point that I was trying to make is that the steel braided hose is more resilient. I’d just had my ice maker installed (less than a year) when the pin hole size damage occurred. That’s all.
I’ve had two copper lines in my house develop leaks, a pin hole on a pressure line, and a condensate drain from the AC unit. So now I don’t trust copper either. Plumber told me that’s normal.

Your intro alone answered all the questions that I had aboutt this type of project. I went to Home Depot looking for the Brass compression coupling and two people that worked there said this can't be done LOL I'm glad i found your video b/c I can customize my tubing instead of just using what was supplied by the water filter since I wanted to run it further what was given. And thank you for leaving the links for the supply. I wish I saw this first instead of wasting my time with the narrow minded people. Real pros will find solutions and get the job done.

One thing to note is that the 1/4" plastic tubing you use in the video is NOT PEX, it is regular HDPE. There's quite a difference. As I recently learned at my expense is that actual 1/4" PEX water line (for ex. Waterline Products Ltd. 1/4" PEX B tubing) has thicker walls and is much more rigid than regular polyethylene. The consequence is that if you want to use 1/4" compression fittings, the brass inserts do not fit inside the tubing . So you are left with 2 choices: don't use the inserts, only the plastic ferrule OR use push-fit fittings. Since I have already installed my valve and cut the tubing (therefore can't get a refund for those), I decided to take a chance and install the compression fittings without the insert. The walls of the PEX tubing are VERY rigid, probably as rigid as copper so I'm cautiously confident. I will be checking on those joints every hour after I install them for a whole day to make 100% sure everything is ok.

Directions on my fridge say to flush the line for 3 minutes or 3 gallons before connecting the new line to the back of the fridge.
Yeah some companies ask for that so just get yourself a bucket and flush it :)
I just watched This Old House where he fixed a water line. The woman was about to drink the fridge water when the guy said to throw away about 3 glasses. Only 3 glasses??? That woman will still be drinking sludge from the water line. That small amount won't clear it!
in the materials list for the 1/4" PE-RT Pipe (50ft), link goes to 3/8" OD not 1/4". It does not seem to say that anywhere in the description but I purchased via the link and received the 1/4" inside diameter not outside, FYI DIYers. Seems others made the same mistake in the Q&A section

Never use the clear plastic tubing with out any lettering on it.. it's not rated for water pipes... Also the saddle valves.. never use them.. thank you for sharing this post.. Robert Jr NJ here and plumber

You should make a video on how to connect a 1/4" copper supply line to a Bosch B36CD50SNS which has a 6mm metric fitting. Lots of hits on the forums for this problem.
I like how you chose plastic over copper, and also use the plastic ferrule with plastic pipe!! This is often overlooked
