Gavin is just incredible. I just.....I can't....I don't....I...he...I don't even....what? He's an _INCREDIBLE_ drummer, I'm missing words. He's not overdoing thins, he's just musical. Very seldom.
After many decades watching drummers and being one myself, I can't help but think I have finally found the perfect drum master that just seems to have hit on all areas of mastery of the skins. This guy has a touch that I have never seen, as accurate and fluid and musical as it can get. Just fantastic skills and great attitude to boot. Just enjoy watching and learning from this man. Keep it up Gavin. One of the greats without doubt, if not in a great class of all his own. Again...it's that 'touch' and 'soul' in his playing. Priceless.
I'm actually emotionally moved by his playing. There are many drummers I enjoy but very few who's playing has this impact. He's a true musician in every sense of the word!
Gavin is just the best at what he does. Keeps his kit perfectly tuned , has some killer, yet subtle fills and oh, those ghost notes. He is always a case of serving the song!!
Such beautifully soft playing. Nice contrast with his heavier parts in Porcupine Tree, which are also great. Distinctions like soft versus loud gain so much meaning when the musician has both in their repertoire and fully understands how to use or omit them. Masterful.
This is fantastic stuff. There are few drummers I can think of who play such dense, odd meter stuff and make it sound so effortless and natural as Gavin does. He's such a classy musician.
I just did a piece in 15/8 and it took me about 6 months to master. He is always about 1000000000000000000 steps ahead and doing it 1000000000000000000 times better.
never heard of him 'til today....he's definitely add to my list of favs.......this is so cool...i love xylophones...and guitars, and pianos, and basses, and drums, and violins, and wind instruments...all instruments really....i just love music...and this reminds me of that.
It's wonderful seeing these comments....worlds like beautiful, musical, cerebral, creative. NIce words not always used for drummers. I love this drummer with all my musical heart. At 2:27 the band is playing their usual subdivisions of 7 +7 +5. He is catching all those band punches with his sidestick while playining in 4 on his hat. Beautiful heavenly music. Reminds me of "First Circle" by Pat Metheny. A song in 11 but feels so natural while the genius of it makes you want to sing along..
this is truely amazing, not only on the drum front but on all fronts. that horn line is amazing, and the piano part is sexyyy. this is a truely awesome and masterful piece of music. this is why gavin is my favorite drummer for sure
This video left me smiling like a simpleton. I genuinely think Gavin is the best drummer in the world. I don't even know how to describe how good he is, he just knows exactly what to play and when to play it... Simply amazing. By the way, does anyone know what that china is?
I funnily, mixed the styles of Dave Weckl, and Gavin Harrison, in my playing. Well, to say the least, I lost my mind in happiness. Then I passed out. Ha. My drums said thanks, love it it.
Notice those last two cymbal hits. He doesn't just bang them with the sticks, he does a "stroke" instead, using the whole stick and not just the point. Pure genius!!!
@Deraek They are »Gamelan instruments. Percussive instruments from Indonesia ( Bali, Java ). That one is from a group called the Saron and the one he is using is called Peking.
I second unclesaboin's comment. When the drums are not being smashed to within an inch of their breaking point, they really are rather nice to listen to, especially when they are played by one of the best out there.
I discovered this tune a few days ago. I am so astonished. On the very good site abbdrums.com, it is said that the score is 5/8 7/8 7/8. Just the kind of thing Vinnie Colaiuta is the only other guy able to play. I mean, play music. Gavin Harrison is a magician. He played Sound of muzak with Porcupine Tree in 7/4 and no one cares about the composed odd rythm. It is smooth, fluid, it is music. Hats off to this guy who gives some kind of badge of honour to drummers. You know the joke : what is a jazz quartet ? 3 musicians and a drummer. Gavin Harrison is a musician, a perfect one.
Gavn s one of the best drummers alive today!, m not into the music here but the drumming is flawless. He jumps from different time signatures as easy as im typing this.....
Please somebody tell me exactly what's the name of this music style??? This must be something like a jazz-rock or rock-jazz... This is AWESOME!!! This is even able to kick all kinds the metal (except PT of course) out of my head!!!
Gavin Harrison is one the most liquid drummers I've ever heard. Everything he does just flows like a god damn river. I love this man.
+Rhett Miller
It's like he took the best parts of Weckl's precision and chop and mixed in Bill Wards groove and musicality. I dig it!
Rhett Miller and he is not overly flashy like some drummers are *cough* The drummer from Chon is sometimes.
He's not overly flashy, but he can go nuts and be incredibly technical when the music calls for it.
He "makes love" with drums.
Gavin is just incredible. I just.....I can't....I don't....I...he...I don't even....what?
He's an _INCREDIBLE_ drummer, I'm missing words. He's not overdoing thins, he's just musical. Very seldom.
Gavin has such incredible dynamics and feel also the best sounding kit I’ve ever heard
always a pleasure to hear that perfectly tuned drum kit...

100% agree
Gavin is the definition of tastefulness and expressive musicianship.
proud to have seen him playing a couple of times with the great PT!
I'm actually emotionally moved by his playing. There are many drummers I enjoy but very few who's playing has this impact. He's a true musician in every sense of the word!
Brilliant in all respects, a total understanding of his field!
Gavin is just the best at what he does. Keeps his kit perfectly tuned , has some killer, yet subtle fills and oh, those ghost notes. He is always a case of serving the song!!
The last sentence is the most important, everything he plays is for complimenting the music
So smooth and piano (as in silent) sound and still with such a vibrant energy in his playing. Gavin is a true grandmaster of his craft.
6am Saturday morning and I'm down the GH rabbit hole again...this guy.
Perfectly tuned drum... Gavin plays clean as water... what a beautiful song!!
Such beautifully soft playing. Nice contrast with his heavier parts in Porcupine Tree, which are also great. Distinctions like soft versus loud gain so much meaning when the musician has both in their repertoire and fully understands how to use or omit them. Masterful.

the quality of gavin's recordings are always amazing too.
14 years after its release there is still nothing as tasty as this, drummingwise 🫡
Who knew odd time signatures could sound so relaxing
I just did a piece in 15/8 and it took me about 6 months to master. He is always about 1000000000000000000 steps ahead and doing it 1000000000000000000 times better.
I am amazed every time I hear and/or watch this man on drums.

impeccable timing, touch, and musicality
Such a beautiful kit with beautiful cymbals
this is truely amazing, not only on the drum front but on all fronts. that horn line is amazing, and the piano part is sexyyy. this is a truely awesome and masterful piece of music. this is why gavin is my favorite drummer for sure
No drummer is more musical than Gavin.

It's sounds so sweet! No, I mean literally 'sweet'! 😄 Love Gavin's drumming, specially his versatility! 😍
I love his triplet flams! He nails them so sweetly. It's my favorite rudiment that he uses. Gavin, you're god my man!
Beautiful and very calming!
verrrrrry nice. that snare is unreal!
I heard this on the phone the other day when I was on hold...great track! :P
who are the other musicians on this masterpiece? huge respect to them as well as Gavin
This made me cry :')
I like drummers like this who actually PLAY the drums. It's very musical and pleasant to listen to.
this song is awesome.
I love those cymbals! especially the hats :)
such smooth drumming! you wouldn't think it's in 19/8 just by listening
This video left me smiling like a simpleton. I genuinely think Gavin is the best drummer in the world. I don't even know how to describe how good he is, he just knows exactly what to play and when to play it... Simply amazing.
By the way, does anyone know what that china is?
Sweet thanks. I've been waiting a year for that :(
I hope too!...it's an amazing version
Besides all the praise for the man's drumming - this is a really nice song!
This guy is amazing….so musical and dynamic…drummers drummer?
A musician's drummer
I love the sound and desire his SnareDrum!!!
Seriously, this is perfect drumming!
I funnily, mixed the styles of Dave Weckl, and Gavin Harrison, in my playing. Well, to say the least, I lost my mind in happiness. Then I passed out. Ha. My drums said thanks, love it it.
Wow,that was great.
Amazing!
That's what I thought! Sounds PERFECT!
So smooth-tuned kit!
Sweet. Very dynamic and tells a story
I love this song. this guy it´s awesome.
No rush & no lag. Just right solid and relaxed in the middle. A true Master.
His dynamics are insanely good
Notice those last two cymbal hits. He doesn't just bang them with the sticks, he does a "stroke" instead, using the whole stick and not just the point. Pure genius!!!
This is amazing! A great fusion between traditional and modern instruments. I can see that there is a Balinese Gamelan there
I watch this video everyday.
The finest.
Terrific tune!
That's what love between a man & his drums sounds like.
My God, that snare!!!!
THAT SNAREEEE
because of this video, my mind shifted dimentions
@Deraek They are »Gamelan instruments. Percussive instruments from Indonesia ( Bali, Java ). That one is from a group called the Saron and the one he is using is called Peking.
Is it just me or does his kit sound fuckin awesome in every aspect of his playing? I'll never get over the sound of his kit! or his skill =D
@PoSscar This is from Gavin's DVD Rhythmic Horizons
Gavin really makes me want a Sonor kit, those toms sing so beautifully
this is tight!
Great musician!
So tight!
His kit set-up looks so damn comfy!
@DonQuerres
Yes! The Rhythmic Horizons DVD contains both with and without click! :-)
There's no such thing as "the best" in music.... But Gavin is the best
I second unclesaboin's comment. When the drums are not being smashed to within an inch of their breaking point, they really are rather nice to listen to, especially when they are played by one of the best out there.
@magorestes you sir deserve a medal
I love this sound! :D
And i listen Hardcore Punk as Exploited and One Way System...
From Italy W Gavin Harrison!!!
That hit at 3:22 when the synth fades in makes me feel like walking out a cave onto the top of a hill with a picturesque scene!
Amazing what music does right?
Absolutely necessary for a healthy mind I would say
I love it !:):):)
Excellent!!! :)

I do
LOL im not the only one!

No one can groove in 19 like gavin can :)
Gavn s one of the best drummers alive today!, m not into the music here but the drumming is flawless. He jumps from different time signatures as easy as im typing this.....

Yes.
This is actually insane.

Sonor SQ2 I think. The sizes are all on his website in the equipment section.
Thanks. It was really hard to count.
