Excellent safe process. yard sign FIRST👍. Then do the work...the NC markets you are in “perfect”. Lots of oak & pines...lots of Research Triangle folks with ZERO diy skills & lots of income. Congrats. Keep up the fancy work & get dat 💰💰. Stay safe
Great point! That was a mistake on my part. Another consideration is the safety factor. Putting out a sign lets all of the neighbors know that we are there working. Because of our speed it could easily look like we just pulled into the drive way and were there to steal something. Since we started putting the signs out first we have had 0 cops called on us. It used to happen a few times a year.
Need foot straps so that if you went off the roof and your hanging there you pull these out from your sides and slip your feet into them and you take the weight off the main arteries in your legs. You basically have 20 min hanging with out the straps and your dead. Check it out you cab by then and they velcro to you harnesses. Literally the most important part of the harness.
This comment right here is why I advise people to never trust an NC contractor. It's not concerned with the quality of the job, but maximizing the money grab. The rapid growth and relative wealth of the area has drawn the most unscrupulous agents into home improvement. The sheer number of liars and crooks in this industry make it difficult to find a real craftsman.
Good job. Here in the U.K. we us a Gutter vacuum from the safety of the ground. And suck all the gutters out using carbon fibre poles with an industrial vacuum with a mounted camera on top so you can see when they are empty
Good stuff! You’ve really got me rethinking the whole gutter cleaning thing and adding the service to my exterior cleaning business. Pressure washing/ soft washing is nice and gets high ticket prices but there’s always equipment maintenance and supply issues to deal with and an employee can cause a lot of damage quick. This is primarily hand tools and labor and the lower ticket prices will open me up a whole new clientele that I don’t reach with my other marketing. Keep the videos coming man!
Just a note, Life lines and rope grabs that are used in this way are fall restraint devices not fall arrest devices. Meaning that they will prevent you from falling in the first place. As you have said in your video it is extremely important not to have slack in your lines. I understand about using your at the waste "D" rings so you can get closer to the gutter, however if the person should fall off the edge then it could possibly result in a more extensive injury being jerked from the side rather than from the "D" ring in the middle of the back which it was designed for. It was stated in another video that once the lag screws are installed through the ridge anchor device then it could be used as an approved anchor point which is great. Thanks for sharing the video. It's rarely I see residential roofing contractors use fall protection in the first place. So good job!
I do gutter cleaning and Im so glad this technique works for you, although there is a lot of ways to clean a gutter, I think this way take long time.. and this technique only works for this roof
Many ways to clean gutters, like you said. We have a lot of different tools and methods. This video was originally made to show my clients that we can clean gutters thoroughly and fast.
Never seen that sort of roof material must be a dream to walk on and clean, in Australia our roofs are mostly corrugated sheet metal and older houses are tiled, the sheet metal is slick as f and the gutter end is as sharp as a razor.
Oh wow. I do not envy you. These "asphalt shingles" are on 95% of the houses in my area. Some of the use has a lt of metal and tile roofs, butt not around here.
Excellent vid , I've been working on the cleaning industry for 30 years , started big , now we are a 2 men crew . Before Covid-19 we were easily making over $142 k for a 40 hrs per week each , now we are out of work , trying to figure out how to make money . I am looking into doing this , I can't afford to fall off a roof , my 7 years old daughter needs me for support , besides I am her hero. This vid gives me hope , I am going to start looking for a safety harness to start cleaning gutters . Thank you sir , much appreciatesd.
Thank you for the video. Prevention from falling of the roof is imperative, but since the lifeline is attached to the side of the safety harness and if the worker fall, he will be suspended sideways. Hope there was a rescue plan (self plan or group plan), especially to accommodate the awkward sideways suspension.
They are built to last, so it should be a good investment. I would recommend getting a few extra locking pins. The ones that come with it I do not like.
I've been using an extension tube on a leaf blower but it doesn't hit all angles when you're on a ladder usually. Might need a vacuum or something to replace it but works great on 1 stories
A figure 8 helps and a limiting knot on the end of the rope helps. Also the 3 rung rule is annoying but helpful in many situations. ESPECIALLY if you fall. Also a ladder strap adds extra security to the ladder stability.
I work in solar, so that’s just a few things I learned. Also if you like the side D rings, I would use a y lanyard but that’s completely up to comfortability
This comment is for those that may be inspired to take this approach to do their own work... Moving the stand off device down 2-3 rungs on the ladder will make the transition from the roof back onto the ladder much easier and safer. It is easy to get onto a roof with a ladder that barely clears the eave, it is MUCH more difficult to get back onto the ladder when your ready to get down. 2 - 3 rungs above the eaves trough is where the ladder should reach to help prevent the ladder from sliding away or from losing your balance.
whats the steepest pitch youre comfortable with? how do you approach a 12/12 vs something like in the video? also, do you feel like skate shoes are a close second to cougar claws if you cant afford them?
you can use a Fisk for the rope or a Petzel I.D. I am a tree climber and a Cell phone tower climber. I like how you use a rope to clean gutters. I have never done that nor have i ever thought about it. but i will now thank you. also tha rope grab is for the back d ring for shock load not the side. it breaks 6 feet with a 3 foot extra. if you fall it will hurt your side and pull one way. if on the back d ring. it will pull from the center and not kill u. also if you hang and 0 can save u. then you can go into shock look it up. just want u to be safe.
Great, really great information. As a roofing sales rep my role is a little different than yours, mostly I have to get on the roof usually in just one spot to identify hail damage. I really don't move all around the roof as you do. I use the ridge pro along with other safety gear and I've shelled out quite a few bucks for all of it but it keeps me safe and I would highly recommend it to anybody that gets on a roof.
By "tapping" and seeing/hearing debris fall all the way through then onto the ground. Or using a leaf lower and seeing grass, etc moving at the bottom.
I have a few noob questions. Im just starting out. I have a lawn service in Pa. and trying to get some leaf jobs with all the clogged gutters around here! I want to be safe as possible if im walking on the roof. Im going to buy the cougar paws shoes like you suggest. What about using the body harness? Is there a video that details safely using that? Where do you usually tie off? and what if there isnt a good spot to tie off? Will a big Rigid wet vac be enough to use a pole setup on very high gutters? Also what tool do you use to clear a clogged downspout if the blower will not do the job? I see you dont use water too much. I bought the gutter scraper thingy that screws on to a pole? What size pole do you recommend?
So many great questions. Too many for me to answer in 1 comment. Check out our Facebook group, you will get some really good answers and feedback: facebook.com/groups/315963929711644/
Excellent. Much appreciated and subscribed. I started a soft/pressure wash business a few months ago and am about to start marketing. I'm considering adding this service as well. Did you literally just hand scoop out the gutters? Or do rinse/wash them out as well? Thank you!
Welcome aboard! it really depends on the house/property. I almost always water flush the gutters on my first visit to a property to check for leaks/proper pitch. Following visits hand scooping/blowing may be quicker and make less mess.
@@divcleaningservice9522 Thank you for the reply. That makes sense. I just wasn't sure what extent you went to. That is if you just scoop it out and rinse, or if you literally wipe everything inside and out.
Eve hook is more expensive last time I looked. Ridge Pro you have to screw down for it to be an approved tie off. OSHA has a lot of different requirements.
What should a roof like this cost them? 2. I have a very steep roof to clean the gutters out, do you try to walk up the V part of the roof between two different roof sections , in order to get to the top and plant the roof pro anchor tool? That's the only way I know to get to the top. Thx for Ur videos, I now know I need a couple tools to make it safe for me.
We try to make at least $100/ man hour. There are several ways to scale a roof safely. Tools like: goat roof assist, ride pro, pitch hopper, cougar paws, etc. Ultimately it comes down to experience. Just don't do anything on a roof that you deem too unsafe. With experience you will be able to do more and work faster.
when one nails/screws the ridgepro to the ridge, doesnt that create roof leaks as you perforated the shingles w the screw? could you explain pls how the unit is anchored without damaging the roof so it leaks. thanks
I have heard some folks do it. I personally do not know. I have also heard of folks removing the ridge cap and anchoring directly into the wood. Then quickly sealing it back on when done.
I would invest in the Ridge pro if I only could pick one. The ridge pro can be used the same as the goat by attaching a rigid pole. I personally do not do this, but it is part of the design. Additionally, the ridge pro can act as a tie-off point, where the goat is NOT designed for this. Lastly, a dedicated cheap alternative to the goat is a "ladder ridge hook." About $40 and attaches to the top rungs of an extension ladder.
Hi Thanks for the vid, very helpful. I was wondering if it’s common and acceptable to anchor into the roof with the cheap anchor points you can get from Home Depot. The ridge pro is very expensive just looking for options. Thanks
Where do you get that grip that adjusts up and down the rope to take out the slack, I’m looking at starting a gutter cleaning business. Or what is it called
Quick question...ever considered using headset radios; with lanyard and rope inserted inside tubing to protect the ridge cap shingles; while you anchor the employee from the opposite side from the ground 🤔🤔you are correct that rope slack now is major hassle & somewhat of a fall hazard. SPEED & EFFICIENCY + SAFETY.
I personally like that the RidgePro only requires 1 person to operate. I'll post more videos with the automatic retractable lanyard. It's a LOT faster and less hassle.
when useing the ridgepro.. lets say the peak is a 6... so u adjust the ridgepro to a 6 but because of the ridge vent it wont lay flat.. do u just adjust tge ridgepro to where it clears the ridge vent and lays flat?
You want to clear the vent AND you want to place the ridge pro Flat. Typically when it does not clear the vents, I move the ridge pro to an area where there is no vent. The vents usually stop 1-3' short of the edge or the roof. On a side note I tested the ridge pro on a 6/12 roof and it DOES NOT WORK. You need to bolt it down, but don't try to use it to ascend the roof before bolting down. The RidgePro works best on steeper roofs. It will even function without bolts on steeper roofs, although that's not recommended.
Awesome video, good explanation. Not many residential construction guys believe in need of fall protection. I got some haters comments because I hold people accountable. Funny that one guy was from gutters cleaning. Keep up the good work, stay safe.
When climbing it is not safe to have only two points of contact. Instead of reaching for rungs, keep your hand or both hands around the rails, and slide them up the rails as you climb. : )
3 points on contact might apply ok to rock/cliff/mountain climbing, but on ladders if you slip you'll grip and hold onto a rung you already have hold of, far easier than trying to grip the ladder side as youre sliding down!
only issue is the blower actually forces debris and wet muck under the tile or shingle, we only have tile or steel roof in australia, I too have used blowers good on dry large leaves but best to reverse that blower and vac it out, I revert too ladder or getting on roof as gutter vacs are sooooo expensive hard to break even on costs, I find I am just getting on the roof and cleaning by hand it can be quicker than setting up equipment and cleaning up after but nowadays I thinking of safety hence I found this video.
If you are tall a 28ft ladder with standoff on the top and leg levelers on the bottom is my go to. If you are a bit shorter you may prefer a 24ft ladder.
How far can you move, left and right, from the set RidgePro? Is there an unsafe distance where it could dislodge because there's too much side leverage?
Excellent stuff and nice method. Only comment is that you must have scratched that gutter badly when pulling the rope against it! Not noticeable on first floor but definitely more noticeable damage if it was at lower height right over the garage doors. Cheers!
I don't think it would scratch the gutters. The rope is Nylon and most gutters are powder coated from the factory. I have however thrown the excess rope over the edge and knocked down a wind chime. lol

when useing the ridgepro.. lets say the peak is a 6... so u adjust the ridgepro to a 6 but because of the ridge vent it wont lay flat.. do u just adjust tge ridgepro to where it clears the ridge vent and lays flat?
You want to clear the vent AND you want to place the ridge pro Flat. Typically when it does not clear the vents, I move the ridge pro to an area where there is no vent. The vents usually stop 1-3' short of the edge or the roof.
On a side note I tested the ridge pro on a 6/12 roof and it DOES NOT WORK. You need to bolt it down, but don't try to use it to ascend the roof before bolting down. The RidgePro works best on steeper roofs. It will even function without bolts on steeper roofs, although that's not recommended.
I was more specifically wondering about the thing mounts to the eve
It's called a Ridge Pro
May I ask what you charge for cleaning that house? Thank-you. How much do you charge for cleaning that house?
Typically between $150-$250
@@divcleaningservice9522 thanks.
Would a leaf blower work better???
We use a leaf blower a lot. Some times it's quicker/cleaner to hand scoop, some times blowers, or another tool.
Awesome video, good explanation. Not many residential construction guys believe in need of fall protection. I got some haters comments because I hold people accountable. Funny that one guy was from gutters cleaning. Keep up the good work, stay safe.
It's tough to follow every safety reg, but we do the best we can.
Your harness should be snugg . Im not sure if that how you had it.
Good info
Good catch. Definitely needs to be snug and fitted properly. Safety equipment is only good if used properly.
Hey D thanks for the video. Question what about shingles don't you ruin them when u attach ?
Nothing is ever ruined. If an anchor needs to be attached holes are always caulked afterwards.
When climbing it is not safe to have only two points of contact. Instead of reaching for rungs, keep your hand or both hands around the rails, and slide them up the rails as you climb. : )
Thanks for the info!
3 points on contact might apply ok to rock/cliff/mountain climbing, but on ladders if you slip you'll grip and hold onto a rung you already have hold of, far easier than trying to grip the ladder side as youre sliding down!
@@gbwildlifeuk8269 yes.. a point of contact on the side is not really a point of contact as your falling
I need that harness
Amazon or Home Depot sells them. "Guardian" brand
Same procedure, shoes, and gloves for metal roof?
Good sneakers for metal roof. I carry a pair separate from my wash boots. Grippy gloves too. Best to go on a dry day and keep your shoes dry
Got to be very careful on metal. It can be very slippery.
Great video, how long it took from the time you arrived to the time you left? Meaning including setup.
12 - 15ish minutes.
I just attach a pvc extension I made for my backpack blower and do it from the ground. It's a bit more messy, but it's much safer.
Nice, that could work well on some houses!
only issue is the blower actually forces debris and wet muck under the tile or shingle, we only have tile or steel roof in australia, I too have used blowers good on dry large leaves but best to reverse that blower and vac it out, I revert too ladder or getting on roof as gutter vacs are sooooo expensive hard to break even on costs, I find I am just getting on the roof and cleaning by hand it can be quicker than setting up equipment and cleaning up after but nowadays I thinking of safety hence I found this video.
Thank you
You're welcome
How tall is that spot you put your ladder on? And how big is the ladder in that video?
2 story, 24 or 28ft ladder.
What size ladder do you use? I'm trying to clean gutters without getting on the roof
If you are tall a 28ft ladder with standoff on the top and leg levelers on the bottom is my go to. If you are a bit shorter you may prefer a 24ft ladder.
How far can you move, left and right, from the set RidgePro? Is there an unsafe distance where it could dislodge because there's too much side leverage?
depends on the roof. It's best to stay as vertical to the tie off point as possible.
@DIV Cleaning Service - Which red strap harness (@ 01:05) was used here? Looks heavy duty!
I believe it was a "guardian" brand
Enjoyed the video. What kind of ladder rack do you have on your truck??
Unfortunately I do not know the brand. Sorry I could not be of more help.
You have a link to the products that you used
Why not tie it to the back shackle rather than side
Is that less safe on your harness?
Back shackle is the proper way to use the harness on most harnesses.
Good safety job. But why don't you use blower more safe than the bucket. ❤❤❤❤
We do at a lot of jobs. Just wanted to show something different at this one.
Do you charge for cleaning all the cutter length or just the gutter length CLEANED?
we charge by the job, not the amount of debris
What is that harness anchor you’re using? Can you drop the link to it ?
Ridge Pro, guardian harness system. Both on Amazon
I have however thrown the excess rope over the edge and knocked down a wind chime. lol
@@divcleaningservice9522 Fair enough. 👍
