Initially my thought was "I'll hear Merphy out, but not sure I have the bandwidth for another book yet" and like 3 minutes in I'm already adding this to my cart
I loved this one so much. I read this one in 2018, and I've been waiting for the sequel since. It's unfortunate that Chris Wooding is putting a halt on writing the series for now. But whenever the sequel is ready, I'll be diving into it IMMEDIATELY. Glad you loved it that much, Merphy!
Yay I'm so glad you loved this! I'm so excited for more people to read Chris Wooding because he doesn't get the love he deserves! If you want suggestions of what to read next by Chris Wooding I HIGHLY recommend his Ketty Jay series or his YA book Poison.
Merphy:I am going to talk about it a lot on my channel. Me immediately add the book to my TBR. And the colour combination with sticky notes is amazing. Do make a video on how you annotate your books, I know you did a similar on earlier but specifically for annotations, it would be nice.
I just said to myself "where have I heard this name before???" Then I wikipedia'd him. He wrote the Broken Sky series that I *loved* as a middle schooler. Glad to see he's still doing his thing
Merphy, you're enthusiasm is making me comprehend temporarily DNF the book I'm currently reading. Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying the book I'm reading a lot. But this one seems so up my alley. Yeah, I'll be reading the first chapter today... Actually now.
I am so mad this book isn’t more popular. It was so freaking good and I love u for recommending it to me. I NEED TO DISCUSS IT AND NOBODY HAS READ IT?!?!
I wasn't super thrilled with this book when I first finished it, but the more I thought about it the more I realized how amazing of a story this was and how brilliant of a writer Chris Wooding is. I loved the characters, and the prose, and the storyline, and basically everything about this book (except for the ending which KILLED me). If I ever met Chris Wooding I'm not sure if I'd want to scream at him because of how deeply he hurt me or hug him because I just found a new book to go in my top 10 favorites. Thanks for choosing this book as a buddy read for your discord Merphy, I never would have picked it up otherwise!
Oh this was fun to watch! Chris Wooding has been a favorite author for a long time. I think you will have fun with the tales of the Ketty Jay. Small cast of characters, epic, sweeping story arc, and you get character focus in spades. I've read the series at least four times. Such a rollicking "Things did not go as planned" good time! Best of all, they are all published!
I just finished this after seeing this review. All I can say is THANK YOU! This is hands-down one of my favorite books that I’ve read. I love this book…and yea, Grub is awesome. 🙌
I picked this book up due to the spoiler free section of this video and having just finished it hours ago, I came back for the spoilers. It's easily one of my favorite books and it's worth every bit of your gushing. Thank you so much for the recommendation!!
This. Is. My. Favorite. Book. EVER! I picked it up on a whim at B&N years ago, before discovering your channel, because the cover art captured my eye. I read the back of it and. Oh. My. Word. I’m currently on my second read-through in preparation of the Second book in the series (which I have the Hardcover pre-ordered thank you Amazon) and I can’t wait to to catch up with Aren and his crew again,
This book was so good! I read it a couple years ago and I had been trying to get people to read it, but hardly anyone was talking about it, so thanks! 😀 The Skaavengard bits were amazing and Aren was such a great protagonist!
Okay, I just finished this book - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I understand that Garric had to die for Aren to shine in the next book, I understand why Keel killed himself, I didn’t really care for Orica so I am okay with her death… but PLEASE I NEED CADE TO BE ALIVE! I don’t really like fake out deaths… but Right now I don’t care!!! I need him to be with Aren when he does his things in the next books
I picked this book up because of you! Your reading taste is very similar to mine so I was like I can't lose. I enjoyed this book and Grub is the man next to Aren of course but when his scenes happen I laughed at what he said so much. Great story can't wait for book 2. I feel Aren is going to get better with that sword after training with Harod.
I'm so glad you liked this! Chris Wooding has written some of my favorite YA Fantasy and Sci-Fi novels (*The Storm Thief* and *Poison*). I hope you end up reading some more of his stuff
My English teacher in Highschool had us read Poison in class and I've loved it ever since. We need to get Merph to read it now so she can spread the good word! 😂
Thank you for this. I just re-listened to it. Chris Wooding is SO underrated. Why isn't he up there among everyones favourite authors? His books are all fantastic, especially the tales of the ketty jay. Hope you're reading those and reviewing them. Wooding deserves SO MUCH MORE praise from the all the fantasy lovers out there. And they will love him if if they just read his work.
Your input has inspired SO MUCH of my TBR list! Thanks to you, “Lies of Locke Lamora” is my new favorite book! I’m reading “Red Seas Under Red Skies” right now! I’ll have to put this one on my list as well!
THANK YOU for reviewing this book. Your recommendation was the only reason I picked it and I finally picked it up and read it and it is now in my all time top 10 reads.
Grub real hero. Grub like Luffy. Grub is easily one of my new favorite characters in fiction. I want a spin-off of this series narrated by Grub from his perspective.
I think I agree with your dad about Cade. After they escaped out of the mountains and got to the Reaver's Rest his role and POV chapters start declining quite a bit imo. His role shifts from neing co-equal to Aren to a side character. He doesn't really provide any major skills to the group, his motivation and back story is lack luster (especially compared to a similar yet deeper Keel). He gets relegated to comic relief to the group and motivating factor or support for Aren. But that changes after the Ghetto scene. So in the end it was best for him to die rather than become a third wheel for the Aren-Fen relationship. Also, I saw his death coming, because he was the last one in the row while running from a death trap. Just like Osman. Although I didn't expect him to do it a third time with Orica (also I thought Harod was bringing up the rear and not Orica so RIP). I also thought she would be important for the whole Sard subplot. But I guess she achieved her primary objective of completing her song and making it famous.
I was surprised by how much I loved this book. Usually, epic Fantasy like this isn't my taste (I couldn't get into Wheel of Time, managed A Song of Ice and Fire purely because of the show), but this blew me away! I was hooked all the way through, loved how every character felt so fully developed and realised, loved the descriptions and how Wooding built the world, and the story, whilst not revolutionary, kept me fully on board and I really enjoyed myself - can't wait for the sequel!
Yes to everything you said. Cade and Aren for life. This book was so fast paced for me but at times I wondered if you did overhype it. You did not!! That ending where they're all giving their reasons was so beautiful. I cried so hard at the bridge scene at the end. I thought they didnt spend enough time with the first death tho :( (trying not to give names)
Ugh, I just finished this book yesterday and I’m so glad I found your video because I need to commiserate with someone. 😭 Cade was my favorite character because of his simplicity and relationship with Aren. They’re friendship is what carried the book for me, so I’m definitely hoping it’s a fake out and Cade shows up in the next book… otherwise, too heartbreaking 💔
This book was brilliant. I’m completely on board with your enthusiasm for this book. For a 800+ page story it flew by. Every page is valuable. Loved it!
I read this strictly because of your recommendation and feel exactly the same way! Such a great story and cast of characters! The last time I was this satisfied with a book was the mistborn series. Hats off to Chris Wooding for this one. Can’t wait for book two!
I just got done reading the scene of Garric and Aren in the Sard Ghetto and it was probably the best book scene I've ever read holy cow, the feels are strong with this one.
Just finished this. I got chills during the "I'm leaving you" scene and when Aren catches Fen. Almost wish I sat on it until at least the second one was released but here we are. Such a great book. Thanks got the recommendation. Definitely a new favorite.
I picked this up as an audiobook after you recommended it last week. I was initially unsure, it definitely has that classic fantasy vibe. But I am now about a quarter of the way in and I am converted. I am really enjoying it. Thank you for the recommendation I hadn't heard of this before you spoke about it!

I had this for way too long, tried it then put it down for something else. Just finished and I loved it. Great world building, amazing flawed characters and great story. It's unbelievably unique considering it only came out a few years ago. Everyone should read this. NOW!
I still need to read this, it's been on my shelf for almost 3 years. His Tales of the Ketty Jay books are awesome too. I've not read more than a few dozen books in my life but that series is currently my favorite, until something else tops it.

Im excited to read this book! Chris Wooding got me into fantasy and a love of reading when I read his series Broken Sky when I was 13 or 14 years old. I'm now 33 so it's been too long since I've pick up one of his books.
Annnnnd....just ordered it. Considering The Lord of The Rings are my favorite books, I have high expectations and can’t wait to go on another quest filled with deep friendship and world building! 🙌🏻

The book starts out very fantasy tropy, but the characters and their archs are really well done. The author also subverts some of the plot tropes which keeps you on your toes while reading. Very enjoyable book!
I agree with your dad. It tore my heart out how Harod reacted to Orica's death. It was heartbreaking. I also feel that Cade isn't really dead and that may be because we didn't see him die. Why saw his dad die, we pretty much know Garric is dead, we saw others die. But to me Orica's death was gut wrenching, not because of her death but because of Harod's grief. It felt real and raw. It brought tear to my eyes and it was wonderfully, and beautifully written with emotion.
I'm pretty sure Cade isn't dead. Those caves and tunnels were flooded. He fell into a pool of water and somehow managed to find his way out on his own.
And with this my TBR list grew by 800+ pages
