I started as a type designer (i designed typefaces/fonts/font families) and in college after collaborating with industrial designers on product design, I really wanted to switch majors - but it was at the time, extremely intensely focused on hand-illustration, of which I am a terrible illustrator (manually) but though I am an accomplished type designer with 7 font families under my belt, I chose graphic design for my career... having now worked for a toy company for 5 years, i've transitioned to industrial design about 30% of the time, and I'm really really regretting not switching sooner. I've become an expert in Keyshot (thanks to Esben and others) and I've been learning Rhino, coming from Sketchup for tradeshow booth design; I'm falling in love with product design. I'm seriously considering going back to school to get a degree in ID.
Hey thanks for sharing your story! It’s never to late to find your true passion and I’m sure that your past experience will just make you a better industrial designer. It doesn’t hurt getting the basics from school but it’s so much more than just design theory or software so I’m sure you already are using critical design thinking in your process. you can get a free trial (and keep getting free trials) if you enroll in school and get a .edu email, you can get 80% off. i'd get a free trial and watch some tutorials, it's pretty rad. I started with Blendr, transitioned to Sketchup Pro, and am coming back around to Rhino for work.
So true though, companies that are driven by design seem to be so much more interesting to work for!
