How to bring a Product to Market (as an industrial designer)
Pre-Order the Luggage Hook: kck.st/3xd23tM
In this video I want to talk about my experience on a special topic: Bringing a product to the market. The best feeling for industrial designers is always when people have your product in hand and it helps them, makes their lives easier, or brings joy. This scenario is currently happening in my life, as we just launched a new product: the Luggage Hook. This small travel accessory helps you carry your jackets and bags, making travel much easier. I hope that this story inspires some of you to also take steps to launch your own product. If you need help with that, feel free to ask.

    Great video! Do you know how to make a solid object from separate 2D sections. For example I have different 2D sections of a wall which have different size and I want to connect them for making a 3D solid wall. I've tried to use LOFT order but it just made a shell by connecting lines of different sections.

    While those 3 ways to create the Y-branch of the handle are quicker, the best approach is to use 6 single-span surfaces for each side. Despite that this technique requires more time for modeling, the end result is much better and exactly what's used for manufacturing purposes by the majority of industrial designers. ua-cam.com/video/KywTxrkTkco/v-deo.html As for the 3nd way that uses a patch, it's possible to create a better end result by building 3 blend curves between the blend surfaces. This way, the bulging of the patch surface will be considerably less pronounced.

    But we can play with extracted isocurved in 1st option as it gives continuous curve to use for further division or working. Also the flow will have more flexibility in option 1 because it is single continuous surface. Even you can split the option 1 with split _isocurve command to achieve option 2. Actually it depends on the need but your argument is also valid for that situation.

    Love the design. You said that injection molding was too expensive, what was your alternative?

    • @danielbrunsteiner
      @danielbrunsteiner 4 місяці тому

      What I meant is that a two-part injection mold (also called two-shot) is very expensive, wher you will end up with a part made from two different types of plastic, such as a harder one and a softer one. This type of injection molding is more expensive. So I was happy that we changed it to a one-part.

    Thank you, Daniel! Your work is truly inspiring! As a designer, I'm bursting with questions, but I'll keep it brief. How did you navigate finding the ideal partners for engineering, manufacturing, logistics, etc.? If your product is made in Europe, how did you calculate the overall cost effectively? What led you to choose Kickstarter, and could you offer any resources or insights on launching your first campaign there? Such an intersting topic!

    • @danielbrunsteiner
      @danielbrunsteiner 4 місяці тому

      Hi Jonah, thank you so much for the kind words. I try to answer your questions quickly, maybe if there is enough interest I could also answer them in another video. So, for the partners, I found that if your contact person is responsive and thinks ahead, you can tell they are easy to work with, which is already such a big plus. For the cost, of course the production will be a bit more expensive, but we have a big advantage of shorter lead times and shipping routes to the whole of Europe. We use Kickstarter and other crowdfunding platforms mainly to gauge the response and create a community. Nowadays, the only way to really reach your customers is through paid ads sadly, so building up from an early-adopter user base could create a good basis. Hope that answers your questions. ✌️

    Hi, thank you very much for the great tutorial, I'm a beginner with a lot of Catia background so this is a completely new way to do modelling for me! However I have one issue: When I move the control points in front view, they also get moved in top view - shouldn't that be prevented by using front view? like, shouldn't using front view restrict any movements to just that plane? (I'm around the 20 minute mark, building the basic shape)

    • @danielbrunsteiner
      @danielbrunsteiner 6 місяців тому

      Hi Daniel, no that's a common misconseption, The points or movements will snap in 3D space even on the side view. If you want to restrict movement to be planar you have to activate that option in the lower toolbar (next to Grid Snap, Osnap and the Gumball etc.)

      Hm hard to say what you mean exactly. But are you seeing the surface isocurves by any chance? If you go to Display Options of your viewport you might see this enabled. Which creates a lot of additional lines that you don’t see in the video. You should still be able to follow the rest of the video. Hopefully that helps.
