Inside India’s Massive Farmer Protests

  • It’s being called the largest protest in world history. Millions of farmers in northern India have come out against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new “free-market” farm laws. And they’re going to dramatic lengths to make their voices heard, occupying highways and setting up huge camps. Farmers insist the laws would push them further into debt and leave them vulnerable to exploitation by corporations. But the government is cracking down, and India has seen a wave of police violence, censorship, nationalist propaganda and jailing of activists and journalists. Still, support for the farmers is growing.
    AJ+‘s Dena Takruri gets a firsthand look inside one massive protest camps - complete with sleeping sites, pharmacies and communal kitchens - and speaks with a farmer who’s living there and reporting on what’s really going on. How long are farmers prepared to stay and resist? And is this India’s biggest challenge to capitalism yet?

      It will be successful for sure. The farmers main demand is that they receive an assured (ie. minimum) fair price for their crops, something definitely worth protesting for.

      TO BE HOPEFUL in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness.
      What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places-and there are so many-where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction.
      And if we do act, in however small a way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory.

      @@VivekKumar-rb7zk You are right. The MSP steals money from landless laborers who build the industrial and service taxes. The money instead of investing in industry and infrastructure is diverted into pockets of landed so they can continue their unviable small farming. The landless keep toiling for 100$ a month while farmers buy scorpios. The land prices per acre are shooting roof, and even small farmers are rich compared to laborers. Enormous amount (tens of thousands of crores) of subsidies are showered on the landed farmers again diverting the sweat of industrial and landless labour. Income tax on farmers need to be started and small farmers should be told in no ambiguous language that India will only invest in industry and infrastructure. Small farmers should lease their land if they find small acreage is not efficient or viable. Or they can find out if organic or multi layer farming is possible for them. There is no reason to treat landed farmer small or big different than landless laborer.

    @vishalkrishnareddy7871 3 роки тому +8

    *Agriculture provides employment to over 50% of India’s population but the contribution of agriculture to India’s GDP is only 16%. Why? ~ To start:*
    * Farm size- the average farm size in India is 1.3 hectare. While in Australia it’s 800 hectare, Argentina 518 hectare, Canada 315 hectare, US 250 hectare, UK 86 hectare, so the average Indian farmer only has 1/50 - 1/500 of the land a farmer elsewhere will exploit, to generate an income.
    * ~
    * Access to markets-the majority of farmers are lacking access to a functioning logistics network to sell their output. The roads, rail and canal transportation aren't there, along with safe / cold storage to preserve food till it can be processed or sold. Resulting in a 30-50% spoilage rate, effectively halving India’s farm output
    * ~
    * Irrigation- just over 1/3 of India’s arable land is currently irrigated, and where used water and energy inefficient flood irrigation is common. Increasing the cost and reducing the potential land that could be irrigated, degrading yields outside of the monsoon
    * ~
    * Fertilizer- approximately 10 million tonnes, annually, of nutrients are removed from India’s soils, and not added back through the application of fertilizers, degrading soil and lowering future crop yields
    * ~
    * Technology/Methods- the small farm sizes won’t physically support, and the farmers can’t afford the substitution of human effort, for mechanical, so labour intensive and inefficient millennia old farming practices continue~
    ~
    In combination these result in the average agricultural worker living little more than a subsistence life, being barely able to produce / earn enough to sustain their own family, from a typical 1.3 Hectare farm, let alone contribute to society at large.
    ~
    If India did farming in a Western manner, with say 100 Hectare farms, that would support the application of fertilizers, drip irrigation, mechanical harvesting and processing, storage and transportation issues resolved, the quantity of produce reaching the markets could well double, but the number of laborers required would likely reduce from 700 to 12 million. At which point the 1% of the population still engaged in agriculture would likely account for 30% of GDP. This leaves the question of what to do with the surplus 688 million bodies ?

      And the market is controlled by the richest and corniest ones.
      In truth, they have no choice but to put morals aside for profit,
      Otherwise anyone who puts profit first will outcompete them.
      Its just that Capitalism works that way. Morals dont pay off.
      Only solution is to replace this system with something that focuses on collective good and not profit.

    • @comradeboris167
      @comradeboris167 3 роки тому

      @Amandeep Singh 1st those countries you mentioned were not Communist, they were Socialist.
      2nd, China has a world's largest economy.
      3rd most of other ones were small enough to be destroyed with restrictions from other countries. (Cuba, Venezuela) or even bombed (Vietnam) for being Socialist.
      4th Countries that were Socialist but not enemies of Western Block like the Yugoslav countries had a time of prosperity during Socialism.
      Their citizens had free education, healthcare and housing paid not by the taxpayer money but with surplus profit from the collective companies.
      That's right, goverment focused on the people's needs and not on serving the elite.
      Capitalists simply won the cold war and most of the Socialist countries were destroyed. They didnt fail by themselves like media wants to portray.
      So that argument is not valid. People should stop refusing to see the failures of Capitalism because the media invented an invisible enemy and called it Communism.
      This system is far from perfect and it has to be replaced. And we both know that to be true.

There are farmers in every state of the country, the death rate mentioned by the report is largely from the other states not Punjab, which has a fraction of the total death rate. Completely biased and lack of proper research on the reality of the issue - www.downtoearth.org.in/tag/farmer-suicides , states with most suicide rates are not protesting and only 2 state farmers are protesting. Lot of us were silent due to the respect for farmers irrespective of the state but this has gone too far and facts based on data need to be presented and not propaganda.
