World-famous performance artist Laurie Anderson reflects on Heart of a Dog, her avant garde documentary that weaves together the death of her husband, Lou Reed, her mother, and her beloved rat terrier, Lolabelle. Anderson joins Shad to explain why she explores our darkest fears through the eyes of a dog, why it's so hard to "make words" about what really happens to us, and how one vet's invitation to euthanize Lolabelle - slowly release her, shot by shot - made her think of our larger discomfort with death.

Listening to your relationship with your beloved dog and their passing brought wells of tears to my eyes. It brought the memories of my companion animals dying in my presence, one while cradled in my arms. The impermanance of all things. Everything is temporary.
I will have to watch your film.

The words dead or death are very new words, which came into use in the 11'th century.Prior to death the word transitos Latin or transition, translates in English to crossing. Life is so rich, Laurie you have been such an influence on my journey. Thank you so much one & all.

Last night I had a dream. Laurie looked a lot like how she looks here, just a bit older, but in a very good mood. She was sitting behind a piano in a bright red dress, playing a cabaret style "song", joking around.... I remember a part where she sang " and I'm waiting for Sally Williams to die"......very strange dream, and I wish I could sing that part of the song to her.
