"No one will ever ask you to do the thing you really want to do. Do not wait for this to happen. It will never happen. Things will happen to you, but this will never happen. Just think of what you'd like to do, what you dream of doing and then just start doing it." (15:07) JUST DO IT (where have you read that before?) She's right -- we are constantly influenced by other people who expect certain things from us, but the truth is that no one really knows the creative genius residing within us, ready to be expressed in a real way.
The other day I was listening to a Ken Nordine recording about how we dance with our hands, and I notice how well Laurie dances with hers. Her speech makes me feel much less alone. I'm very grateful that she did this.
I was introduced to her in 1983, and I didn't think much of her music at the time. It wasn't until I actually saw her perform live that I fell in love with her. To this day, she is still an inspiration. :)

So much to listen to, re-member, reflect upon and, then, do. Thank you, Laurie Anderson, for all of it, especially, Short Song for Pillow Speaker - 33:01-34:46, singing like a violin. Huzzah!
I'm not familiar with the current situation regarding grants, but since our economy is what it is these days I'm guessing that it's quite difficult. would anyone else care to add to this?
Dr. Laurie Anderson!! Cool. To foxtrapper1972 (below): I hear you. I've even seen people die young. If your work is winding up in the closet, stop doing it and just live a while. The universe itself is the only real masterpiece. You are living in a living painting/ sculpture/film/song, that can never be locked away, except maybe by full scale nuclear war, or if someone opens their car door on you while you're cycling really fast. So be careful?
What money there is for the "arts" seems to find its way to "arts" organizations...Not much ,if any trickles down to working artists. Individual artists grants are a thing of the past and never really were intended as sole support for people. Unless one is wealthy they will pay dearly to pursue the art lifestyle....Just my take.
I always thought Laurie Anderson was from another planet (in a good way). I respect her views here but the reality is that MOST of these graduates will never make a dime from their art and all those great opportunities she speaks of are pipe dreams. After years paying back student loans (at some menial job) the hope begins to fade. No, it isn't all about money BUT without some kind of support they eventually give up....or sacrifice and suffer dearly to make things that end up in a closet.
oh yeah!!!! Great idea, Laurie! Very realistic! NO THANKS- my taxes are high enough!!!!LOL Maybe those pampered SVA grads can go out and make it in the real world!!!!LOL
