  • I came across a frustrating lighting problem during a recent product shoot. My lighting setup was unable to deliver sufficient illumination to the underside of the product and adding addition studio lights or reflectors wasn't working. This video shows what I came up with to solve the problem. It turns out to be a hugely helpful creative tool for all kinds of macro photography. Costing about $3 and taking less than 10 minutes to make, this flash adapter is something you absolutely need to try.

As for your AF-C setting. If you're using Nikon, go to the 'AF menu', 'set AF tracking' to the 'longest option'. This should stop the constant hunting.
Alternatively you could turn AF off, set focus/aperture manually.
Old lenses are perfect for setting focus b/c they have distance and depth of field scales on them.
    Neat content.

Looks like a Magmod with a dome diffuser. Brilliant results.

Thanks again for another useful video. I have made practical camera gear from unrelated bits, largely because of the high cost of buying ready-made ones. This is a great idea for a diffuser and I will give it a go when I get chance.

Very innovative again! We do not have the same glue and floor tile material here in India but similar foam is used in packing and rubber adhesive works well. for cutting foam I made 'G' shaped saw with a plywood piece and i used NiChrom wire, used as fuse wire in mains electric supply or as heater element in many domestic appliances. with a couple of rechargeable batteries it works like a foam cutting thread saw. It is faster and gives cleaner results to me. It is just basically what you taught with cheap material available to you, and I use polymer foam packing sheet waste a lot, so it is just an adaptation 😊🙏

Great videos. Thanks for the helpful material. I hate to tell you this, but there are a few variations of this dome out there. I have a cheap version I ordered via Amazon, but there are also the Gary Fong diffuser, Fomito makes one, Magmod also. DIY is ultimately the least expensive, though! 🤠

Interesting diffuser. I have a few bathroom/outdoor spherical lampshades that I have used for extreme macro where I will have an insect specimen placed inside the sphere. The lampshade will act as an overcast sky giving nice shadows and bringing out all the colors of iridescent subjects. It might be an interesting item for you to play around with :)

Great idea, Ulrik. I have several lampshades I use for that very purpose, but I haven't done a video on the subject. Thanks for the idea!

The way that glue works, is similar to the way you glue patches on bicycle tubes.
When you patch a bicycle tube you rough up the area around the hole in the tube with sandpaper or something rough.
You apply the self-vulcanizing fluid to the tube around the hole, and then you wait for the fluid to dry before to apply the patch.

Wow! Thank you! I've got to try this out! But I cannot think of where to get such an opaque dome. I can access a clear plastic dome approximately the same size, and I think I'll try if it works covered with white fabric that I use for diffusing in other lighting settings. Perhaps? :D

Oh dear Allan! I’ve been having exactly the same `Err’ messages come up on my D850! I thoroughly cleaned the contacts both in the lens throat of the camera and on my lens and it’s been faultless since! I’ve again enjoyed your video, but haven’t you just created a brilliant all round macro lighting dome? It looks as though that would be useful for beautifully lighting all close focused subjects for a fraction of the cost! Great stuff as always on your channel and I hope your D850 comes back cheaply fixed!

Thanks Hilary! Being with my camera is a major drag, but at least I'm relearning how to use my backups. I've been experimenting with the dome and you are correct. It works great for a lot of up-close subjects. I cut out a few discs of tracing paper and put them in the dome and it really softens the light beautifully. I need to remember that the dome has a very sharp pin sticking out the top... I've stabbed myself a dozen times.

Don't know if you saw his follow-up video, but the root case was third party batteries. Do you get the issue with Nikon batteries?

Whilst drawing up a plan of your light box frame. Mind in neutral I thought of your "pindome" you may already have a name for it. But I thought this incompassed it's characteristics. Reframe. I'm thinking of a rectangle on top same depth but 8"wider to overlap the sides. The overlap of 4" a side to have another 1/2" pvc fixed directly underneath for more stable attachment of flash. Perhaps a cheap s/steel rule attach for the reference book to record. Setting up a small room in the shed to do macro. Incorporating a single mattress incase I get locked out being excessive . Love your videos. It should be a TV show! Thinking of cancelling Netflix. Hope I ave you a smile. You certainally do me! Especially your "praying pork" recipe. Cheers.. Colin C, Aus.

Hello Colin, hope all is well down there. Pindome it is - best name for a gadget yet! I like that idea - I could have used those outriggers in a shoot I did yesterday. I ended up with 6 speedlights and not enough room in the cage. I feel another modification coming on. You must send me a picture of your macro room when it's done - brilliant idea!

  • @HarengusRubra

    Great idea,
But if you cut it to size afterwards anyway, why not starting with 3 squares instead of trying to cut 3 circles? The use of the foam for fixing a modifier to a speedlight is a a briljant solution to a often occurring problem. I hate using velcro. I will certainly start using it too. My Nikon FT3 still works after 45 years. My new , and still waiting for it to arrive,.....life expectancy probably a few years. My electronic Fuji was used only three times. It was working fine when I put it away 15 years ago. Got it out to use.....it didn't work. Yes, I put batteries in it. It was not a cheap camera. I think that's the problemwiththe digital stuff.
