The one thing I would be wary of, because of the unit turned off, is the possibility of the owner turning it off to see how you respond and if you are being honest. Things like that happen.
Not just HVAC. I had a guy bring me a computer to have some kind of upgrade done. When we got it on the bench, it wouldn't power on. We called the guy and he says "Well, it worked when I brought it in." Thereafter, we insisted doing a quick power-up in the customers presence.
Welp due to location discrimination that leaves me out .... if you can't wait the extra time it would take me to get there from Vermont i don't want the job 🤣🤣🤣
Great video, but just one comment. ALWAYS check for voltage on the load side of a disconnect before using an ohmmeter to check for grounds, even when it appears to be turned off. The disconnect could be faulty, and one or more legs could still be energized. It's just good safety practice and can prevent a nasty shock and damage to your equipment.
Sometimes you can only do so much when the customer doesn’t want to spend the money on fixing the main problem.. You did all you could in this situation Chris. Thank you for the awesome video! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Ductwork incorrectly size.....noooooo....you dont say....you are so right about that....its so common it's not funny. Seen it so many times I lost count at 1000..😊😊. Another great video Chris
00:00 Take it from a guy that road techs as well... You don't wanna waste 2 to 3 hours of you life in a car to get home. All you end up doing is arrive home, eat shower sleep. there's do time for anything. I did this for 2.5 years.
I do like that the units are clearly marked with stencil text. I don't care if it looks crude or ugly as long as it's readable because it saves a lot of time to find the right item. Totally unmarked stuff sucks since you need to put down a lot of work just to ensure you are messing with the right device.
I live in southern Riverside County more like the Murrieta Temecula area but downtown Riverside is horrible for traffic during the 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. rush hour and the 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Rush Hour I commute to Orange County everyday luckily I do it opposing traffic so it's still an hour drive with traffic it's 3 hours I feel you that 91 freeway traffic is just messed up
I live in riverside county and i graduated from UEI College. I just got hired in February to be a maintenance technician. So far, it's been good, but I've been really interested in the commercial field. Residential is just too much sales, unfortunately. However i unfortunately like the job i am at for now and i would love to apply to be an apprentice for you. Unsure what i should do chris ive been watching your videos since i started school and ive learned alot.
Sadly I'm just a 13 year old chilling and watching some random dude named Chris repair some random broken air conditioner 500mi away from me on the other side of the state of California, not old enough to work with your job
Ive run into this before. No cooling call and the owner actually turned off the system. Luckily for them i did this same thing with an electrical safety check before even turning on the system. Didnt take long to realise the disconnect was just off and she fired right up. Call out fee applied no extra thank you
The amount of calls customers had to pay for me to simply turn the unit on and watch it work for half an hour is astonishing. I do check them out and try to get the units to fail so their money isn't completely wasted but it happens a lot.
Some of these locations run like machines & they don't want to shut down for anything. Other locations have thin margins & risk closure "just for some ductwork". I would say try to get then to do the office duct and if they see the improvement, more likely to approve the kitchen etc?
Almost every tech at the company I work at lives about 45 minutes away. I find it bizarre you'd have everyone come in to the office every day. That doesn't seem practical.
in our country that 1 1/2hr drive or commutte to work is just a basic thing... because we do commutte everyday and we are immune to that kind of day to day work
I mean you could throw in a few decently priced minisplits with those four way ceiling cassettes. I think with Daikin you can pair new cassettes with older condensers, so replacement down the road is not that terrible. And those ceiling cassettes are easier to clean than the wall units. There are super efficient models available in Europe starting at ~$600 for a single split set. Sounds like way less hassle than replacing tons of ductwork to me 😂
You know what's ironic? I think I would be the perfect fit to your company, but I'm from Europe and have zero knowledge about HVAC other than watching your videos. 😂 Jokes aside, I love everything about your style and way of thinking. Even if it's never gonna happen, I'd like you to know, it would be an absolute honor to work for you, Chris. Keep up the amazing attention to detail and never let your brain trick you into thinking stuff like OCD is a bad thing :)
I worked for a cheap AF Applebee’s franchise and they would get plans for say 5 AC u it’s on the roof and to save money they’d go with 1-2 less than called for! We suffered every summer and hot day….
I’m used to the long commute, not that big of a deal to me. Some days it really gets to me though. I live about 1 hour from the shop where I work if traffic’s good.
How about i come in and rent near you just to work as hvac technican? Im curently working as an electrican in weak currents but ive been watching your vids and im really digging to work with you
Your are already troubleshooting. Check with customer first. Maybe just left the disconnect off after your easily train apprentice after the filter change or picking up your lunch?
I'm now working in light commercial/ and refrigeration in dallas, I just repaired a freezer yesterday, a reach in. I wasn't afraid of it due to your and others videos.
20:23 that’s why it’s good to have Celine’s that are tiled, so you can easily remove them and put it back. A solid ceiling you would have to cut it just to replace all the duck work.
I get paid drive time, so the 4 hours of driving per day means a 4-hour workday realistically, which isn't super productive, but I love getting paid to listen to podcasts!
Yeah the first thing I would check is the air filters. Exhaust hood companies always leave the power off. But yeah always check before just turning on.. 👍
Chris its very hard to find anyone we been trying to find an Electrician at work for over year due to a storage of technician and some is from the new way of hiring employees due to government mandates . That’s one reason l got out of the service truck 24 years ago was in service truck for over 15 years when started in service traffic was a certain time of the day .Now its all the time no matter what time of day & night it I was hour to two hours stuck in traffic every day .We were lucky company paid port to port l got off the road when company started to take that away from technicians serving live outside of lower NY.
I am a German refrigeration engineer. Your videos show me that our craft has a future. We are a very sought-after profession. And I'm sad because we can't find any new ones
Maybe adding side discharge ducts for kitchen, and adding metal air filers for make up,better than no filters in dusty area, and adding a fishing scale to tool bag, knowing ref.amount is practical, only a couple of oz.2 cents.
You are wrong about how far to drive to work. I drove 100 miles a day which is a hour one way for over 25 years. I would be a half to one hour early to drink my coffee.
Last job I worked at before retirement they were 45 minutes away from my home. In the 3 yrs I worked there I think I went to the office maybe 10 times for company meetings. They would email my work to me, have whatever I needed for the day ordered at a supply house near me. I told the owner that if you see me in the office I'm not making you money. That was the only good thing about working there.
@@tallbrian100 I had got called in and beat people less than 20 minutes away. And when we got busy I would work over 70 hours a week. So I would be at work anyway if a emergency came in anyway.
Im in welding school. Refrigeration is just a side interest, but i would love that job. Issue is i live on the other side of the planet! 😮 Anyways, awesome content as allways. And hello from sweden😅
I live in Norco, and would love to work for you, but the private sector just isn’t able to keep up in this crappy state anymore, that’s why I jumped ship to my current profession. Welp due to location discrimination that leaves me out .... if you can't wait the extra time it would take me to get there from NY I don't want the job.
Do you hear that Louis belt in the video I don’t know if you noticed it in the video I haven’t watched the entire thing yet but I just wanted to put it out because it is loud
If it’s just the office, why don’t you suggest an additional mini-split for just that room? Pulling a refrigerant line is easier and faster than replacing ductwork?
It’s the whole kitchen but they are only complaining about the office at the moment once the new manager experiences summer and realizes the kitchen won’t get below 85 she will call again
The one thing I would be wary of, because of the unit turned off, is the possibility of the owner turning it off to see how you respond and if you are being honest. Things like that happen.

Excellent advice
As much as I hate mini splits, you should recommend one for the office with all the computer equipment in there.

When we move to an actual apartment, i will pick up a hat.

Who said I don’t pay well?
Love it!!
Do you need a video editor bro!!:)

They use a filter changing company that likely left it off

Do you carry extra oxygen and acetylene in your van?
if i wasnt in austria i would love to work with you haha

I’ll relocate to riverside to be your apprentice. Philadelphia is basically California
experienced refrigeration/hvac tech, fully loaded with tool. looking for job for 200k/year on start. any suggestions near San diego/escondido?
What about a 3rd year apprentice?

Taking an online course for HVAC but sounds like I'll be just more prepped for a proper trade school. This ain't coding.
I feel like it's not really a surprise that it was on heat, if it was turned off at the beginning of March

Sure some jobs work for a long commute but part of a HVAC tech's job being on call and long commutes suck when you get called in.

Do you have any service calls on repairing micro channel coil s....not total replacement just the actual repair ?
I do 45 mins into work every morning, it ain't fun
I’m in school right now happy to join the field in the future
I like the induction happening with the load side of the main breaker..
Great job Chris always have to double check has always great video.
In regards to replacing the ductwork why not have an outside contractor with one or two of your guys on site
I feel bad for you, most intelligent people are leaving California 😢😢
