But the old ones gets just as much fun. Technic set was about making moving parts that function to machines in the real life. I collect a lot of old Lego. Because they simply is better for playing with.

    • @_seriousrob_

@@GreyFox250 Lego choose to do the licensing. It's not needed. The customer wouldn't care if it was a CAT D11 or a generic dozer.
@Unbrickme To be fair, the D11 needs a point scrubbed on functionality for the badly built ripper. It' doesn't touch the ground.

Agree on your assessment of the 856 set. I got that when it came out in 1979 (I was 10 at the time) and just loved it. It's really an ingenious design - to be able to get full bucket action with that small a set and with the Lego Technic pieces that were available then is just amazing. For what it is and for the size of it I would say that it's one of the really great Technic sets of all time.
Please note though that this set is modelled after not a bulldozer but a tracked loader and a relatively small one at that. Few tracked loaders have rippers since this implement is used to soften up the ground to make it easier to doze. Therefore, it's quite uncommon for these to be found on a tracked loader and even more uncommon for small machines (dozers and loaders alike). But - great comparison and good that you pointed out that the yellow tracks (and blade) of the 42131 is actually not strange (as many Lego enthusiasts have put forward in numerous forums) but rather how the real bulldozer is delivered from Caterpillar. Of course, the Lego tracks won't wear like the real ones but at least I prefer this look and that Lego stays true to the original.

Yes, indeed. My favourite model is the oldest. Sick mechanisms and wit. All the crucial design elements are there and the scale is perfect for a functional model. They never talk abou the scale. It is much easier to appreciate a smaller model than a bigger one.

the reason why 853 has no ripper is because there wouldn't be any space. putting the controls on the cab would make it look ugly and considering technic was only 2 years old at that time. it would be almost impossible to put the controls on the cab. also, technic figures were only introduced in 1986 so a minifigure wouldn't look right as most technic sets are either too big or too small for a minifigure. in fact, that is the main reason why technic figures were introduced in the first place after the maxifigures were discontinued in 1975.
    also rip technic figures (1986-2001)
