In June 2021, Shreyans Mamania, a lawyer based in Mumbai, had an unsettling experience while using the Ola app to book a ride from Kandivali to Kalachowki. Despite the fare displayed on the screen being Rs 372 during booking, upon reaching the destination, the driver insisted on Rs 434, an increase of Rs 62 without any clear explanation. Despite attempting to resolve the issue with customer support, Shreyans was unsuccessful in resolving the matter. The driver, visibly frustrated, demanded the higher amount, stating that such situations were common, and people usually complied.
Shreyans emphasizes that the consumer forum is a convenient and accessible platform to address such grievances without the need for legal representation. The Consumer Protection Act is straightforward and user-friendly, allowing individuals without legal knowledge to file complaints. Furthermore, each consumer forum offers a legal aid cell to guide and assist complainants in the filing process, ensuring proper documentation.
Shreyans credits the success of his case to having substantial evidence, particularly a screenshot of his booking displaying the original fare of Rs 372. He advises others to retain all relevant screenshots and carefully scrutinize the breakdown of charges to identify any potential discrepancies that may arise.
In summary, Shreyans Mamania's experience highlights the importance of consumer awareness and documentation, empowering individuals to seek redressal through consumer forums in case of disputes with service providers.
