Thomas Wright "Fats" Waller was an American jazz pianist, organist, composer, violinist, singer, and comedic entertainer. His innovations in the Harlem stride style laid the groundwork for modern jazz piano.
#FatsWaller #TheJointisJumpin
True story: Fats was in Paris and was allowed to play the organ at Notre Dame Cathedral. He started quite seriously by actually playing 1 or 2 Bach chorales and THEN, he would take off on them, turning them into jazz. A shame that no one had the foresight to record those forever lost instances. He died en route to a playing engagement, on a train in his compartment. Sadly, he was a big drinker & would sell some of his music manuscripts for a mere fifth of liquor.
I wish I hadn't read that! it makes me quite sick to think of the lost opportunity.
I find it sad that so many of the best artists & musicians throughout history have cut their lives short via substance abuse.
@@lonniesnyder2388 well this was 80 years ago, it was very common
He is playing the organ in heaven now.
My father in law introduced me to Fats, what a musician and performer.
Fats Waller was among the VERY BEST entertainers of ALL TIME....Gone WAY too soon, his light burned brightly and continues to inspire and entertain all these decades later.
When I first heard this song, I said, "this is Rock N Roll."
John Hamilton (Trumper), Gene Sedric (Tenor Sax & Clarinet), Fats Waller (Piano & Vocals), Al Casey (Guitar), Cedric Wallace (Bass), Wilmore Jones (Drums), Myra Johnson (Vocals).
Thanks for keeping this
I watch it once year or so
I have for twenty years.
For me, the musician of the 20th century. His piano playing was astonishing, as if the machine were a part of him, he wrote and performed some of the most beautiful songs ever produced, and sang with that unequalled, heart-rending voice. He was the only person who was able to combine raunchy jazziness with extreme poignancy and also humour - just listen to 'gonna sit right down and write myself a letter'. When will we see his like again?
100% agree ! Fats was a genius pianist, genius organist, genius composer, genius singer, genius leader, genius entertainer...that's a enormous shame he is never quoted among the greatest musicians of the 20th century !!!!
Yes, I agree. But I think that Roy Clark was the second coming of Fats Waller and is comparable in terms of musicianship.
This is the best thing that has been done anywhere ever.
I just found him today in 2021, and being a 51 year old white guy. He was an amazing musician. I wish I could have been in this Era of life. You really had to know your stuff......what a blessing to have such a video.
I got his complete discography box set. His catalogue is unreal and in many styles depending on the decade. He was extremely prolific and not including all the songs he wrote for other people that became hits. The only one in our era with a output like him would be ghostface killah. Easily one of the greatest singer songwriters in American history and that’s not even delving into his comedic talents on film.
I'm glad you could join us LOL, no hate or anything but, why do people find the need to mention their age race and sex whenever they discover a new song? I'm just messing around by the way
dude i just had a terrible morning emotionally, so i searched up E standard tuning, to tune my guitar by ear, and somehow i found these old music videos, i like this, made me happy to see these people dancing, not to mention the huge swig dude took at 1:01 (:
Memorable.
Waller was a classically trained brilliant pianist and organist who loved Bach
Dude that is nothing. This guy with his vocabulary is of a higher level of intelligence. "Your pedal extremities are quite obnoxious."
@@LitReflex001 Fats was brilliant
@@LitReflex001 your pedal extremities are colossal!
And Paul McCartney said: our favorite composer was Bach….
Well….I‘d say….they both had quite good taste….nothing with that Mozart and Vivaldi nonsense, would John Cleese say…
What great music. I would have to give him credit for Rock & Roll!!!
How, ... just how could anyone not love this! ? ???
Happy Birthday Fats Waller Thanks for your music.
That joint was jumpin! Soul train baby. . Lol. I love it!
One of the greatest entertainers of all time! He just makes you smile😊
While I've listened to jazz for a long time I never really discovered Fats Waller until I read James Baldwin. Amazing!
Oh!! Where where!??
fats is just one of my all time favorites
I love the love in the comments section, the love and the history that's not regularly taught. It amazes me that there's music and musicians who are not getting the recognition they so richly deserve! I hear funny and great quotes from Fats Waller and had to see him for myself! Thank you for posting this video and everyone who took the time to share the love and knowledge. I really appreciate you! 😘
BANG!
When he flashes his devilish, charming smile he sorta ooks like a young Orson Wells.
The piano solo he takes at 2:09 is FIRE
The only other person I've ever seen pull off that initial riff at that speed was Louis Mazetier when he played Runnin Wild with Rossano Sportiello in 2009.
Best thing I always find about it is that he pulls it off while struttin' his comedic expressions at the same time like it's nothing. He truly wasn't playing a character, he *was* one.
I cry when I hear Fats. So much love Fats. Maurice, your dad was something else. So much love. ♥️♥️♥️
This joint is jumpin'!
May 21: Happy birthday Jazz pianist-composer thomas "Fats" Waller (1904-1945) Thank you and God bless. Thanks for the upload, Luiz Paulo Carcalho. RIP "Fats." Blessings
Gerald Johnson he died in '43, not '45
No! No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I`ve seen these types of films before, this is what is known as a "Soundie" an early music "video" that played in primitive rear screen projection juke boxes that used a kind of 16 mm projector. This is a reissue. The original images and titles were printed backwards and reflected off a mirror in the juke box and projected right side up on a glass screen. The films cost 10 cents per view.
Pure awesomness.
If i had a time machine, i would get stuck living Fats Waller shows, instead of being a sworn time traveler! :)
Lovin Fats. pure genius.
It is from the musical Ain't Miss behaving.
Best way to start a day ever!
Fats's face is hilarious in this video.
Joelwee1028 He was quite a ham. Would’ve loved to have met him.
haha love this song and video! these guys knew how to partay. look at those smiles
I would have paid a lot more than a quarter to be there!!
I have heard some of the songs but I have never seen these videos! These are killer!
I'm so glad that these musicians were filmed so often back then.
da good kind of fats: Waller. And don't forget Lyricist Andy Razaf collaborator on most of Fats' hits , born Andrea Paul Razafkeriefo in Washington DC on December 16, 1895.The son of a Madagascar nobleman and a nephew of Queen Ranavalona, III, of Madagascar whose parents immigrated from there.
An amazing production, with the original "Fats!" Thanks so much for posting!
One of the GREATS!!!!!!!
Many years ago there was a Wolverhamption publican, Tommy Burton, who played in the pub and did other gigs. One of his many talents was to be able to do Fats numbers spot on, face as well. There are some tracks on youtube of him. Some are his performances on Pebble Mill at One. Once, memorable, with Les Dawson. In the 70s and 80s I used to see him perform regularly. It was such a good night out. Check him out.
‘🔱🎭🎵 ‘Love the Story ‘ 🎶
Sad story❤😢
the singer is Myra Johnson, who did 3 film shorts of jazz songs. She's in imdb but I can't find any other info on her.
i never play piano without a hat on for now on!
Loving this!
Yay!
Great Great Great !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love it!
FELINEGUARD WILL SPELL IT OUT FOR HUMANS:
best music video ever made
Wish I could play like him.
The greatest
There was an old used record shop in my town in South America in the 60-70ties….he sold mostly 78rpm….and mostly classic jazz…Waters, Armstrong, Beiderbecke, Ellington….
Once I realised the Fats Waller records were twice or three times the price of the other stuff….he sold them that expensive just because he thought, Waller was so good, he expressed his opinion in the price….imagine such a thing today…
Good music
THANK YOU FOR SHARING
Genius! Thank you for posting this sparkling gem!
TIMELESS TREASURES look at the way she’s switchin’...don’t give your real name, oh no, no,no...😁
🤩🤩
greatest entertainer of his time as great as Satchmo
If you didn't know, at some point Al Capone had Fats Waller kidnapped to play his birthday party.
The party was great and Fats was well paid, from what I recall he had a great time and spoke fondly of the incident.
Fuck yeah!!!
Presumably, this was a film version of a rent party.
A joint like that could ruin a man…if he was lucky!

check your weapons at the door. see nothing has changed
casting aspersions
A party's a party dude
Nothing has changed? It costs a good bit more than a quarter. Where have you been?
The broad at 1:44 pitches like John Lester..a ball low and outside!.
he is the last person I would think of on the "SERIOUS MUSICIANS" list!
How wonderful of you to remember Fats Waller, “the black Horowitz”. Today, May 21st 2016 is the 102nd anniversary of his birth. Please check out my youtube channel honoring Fats and other great African-American musicians like Ernest Hogan, “father of ragtime”; Robert Johnson, “king of the Delta blues singers” Sidney Bechet (the first notable jazz saxophonist); and James Brown, godfather of soul - all born in the month of May.
The tempo marking for this piece is "Tempo di-sturb de neighbors"
1941 rave - The joint is jumpin. The first recorded rave in history.
Uncle Joey brought me here.
Fats Waller facial expression is creepy af but I respect him as a pianist definitely
First music video ever?
well then
1:44 A ball low and outside.
how old is this video? thanks. btw. very nice :)
Family
All entertainers were kind of silly in those days. It's called entertainment.
We have gotten so far removed from entertainment it's not funny!
@@pamelajackson495 And that bastid could really play! I have some of his early "piano rolls" on vinyl.
What film was this taken from?
does anyone know who the female singer is? and what movie is this from?
Fats wrote this in 1929. Andy Razaf wrote the lyrics.
They say there's nothing new in life and it's illustrated in the line where it says 'Check your weapons at the door.' I never realized people would be 'tooled up' (as we say in the UK) in those far off days. Surprisingly sad.
"All rodded up." Damon Runyan wad a bunch of those phrases...

It's at 0.04 but only for a second. Don't worry, I'm not trying to turn you in to the authorities. I don't want to lose my chance to watch this vid, I love it.
@@kiwitrainguy also in regular numbers at the close... On my first viewing I got my Roman numerals muddled up (shame) and thought "Wow! 1916?! That's amazing!"
Is that Chick Webb on the kit? If so, this flick has some incredible star power.
No...Chick Webb was never in Fats band..
One never knows do one?
"Give that rat some cheese!" My favorite from Fats... after a big sax solo.
What is the drummer on?
sorry mates,in what film is there this song?
The Janis Is Joplin
Отсутствие технологий люди компенсировали умением. Обратная тенденция удручает(.
Уоллер красавчик)!
Was it ever made clear exactly which joint was jumping?
Whatever joint Fats stepped into 😂
So what happened to Winnie Johnson?
jack black actually does a convincing fats
Is that Charlie Parker on alto??
Time line doesn’t seem right.
NO!!
Are you really trying to tell me the drummer was not on something?
Slick Jones looks like he was concentrating really, really hard in this.
In making a 'soundie', all the music was pre-recorded for the film, then the recording played back, and everyone on the film set had to basically lip-sync (or instrument-sync) what they had played before to their original recording. Some people handled it perfectly. Other people got nervous. Slick Jones looks like he's trying really hard to remember WHAT he played on his drum solo so he could 'mime' it well enough to be acceptable for the film.
Seriously what is the point of the dislike button
Joint here means marihuana?
this is fats domino
No its not
No it isn't. lol
ha haa aah nope
HOW LONG YOU BEEN THIS STUPID lol
He made it he ( they , we , he dem der ) they , he made it go fats. If it's a joke as said below , perhaps it can bee recieved to be on "them " uh. !,lol!?!!M
Amerikans drinking alcohol in a music video. That country has seen better times than now.
I think Ramona just meant, he was silly, not that he wasn't impressive.
A white police officer dancing with an African American woman in 1935? PROGRESSIVE!
He's not white light skin Black guy
this is played almost twice original speed. terrible, try another.
Try this dub, it sounds much more natural:
ua-cam.com/video/PhXr6qenrPU/v-deo.html
This is the best overall dub I've found, although the image quality is fuzzy, but the audio is warm and full: ua-cam.com/video/GNHYZfyqcss/v-deo.html
I disagree. There are other versions at about the same speed...
Love it!!!
