A lot of trainers don't differentiate between the overhand and the straight/cross anymore and it's a bit frustrating. A few weeks back I was watching a live boxing telecast with a veteran play-by-play guy and two former world champion boxers and none of them knew what the trainer was calling for when he was asking his fighter for an 8 -- an overhand right. I'm just a fan but the way my dad explained it to me was
1 - jab
2 - cross
3 - lead hook
4 - rear hook
5 - lead uppercut
6 - rear uppercut
7 - lead overhand
8 - rear overhand
I was shocked that a bunch of guys who know way more about boxing than I ever will couldn't pick up on it. Not a single one of them even picked up on it when the fighter started throwing the overhand rights.
