I watched a Gregory Hines special and Sammy Davis Jr. was in the audience. Davis got up and walked to the stage ... an old sick man, he became stronger with every step toward that stage. He did an impromptu performance, and Hines got down on his knees and kissed Davis' feet. When Davis walked back to his seat he became an old sick man again. Heartbreaking and yet his strength to perform was inspiring. Davis wrote an autobiography "Yes, I can" I highly recommend.
Was a seat filler at an awards show about 100 years ago (okay just 30). Sat next to him. (Oh, seat fillers are “civilians” drafted to make an event venue look full for camera. About 1/4 of the people you see at the Oscar’s are “civilians”. Why? The taping of an 🥇 show is incredibly long and boring. No one in their right mind WANTS to go, but it’s obligatory. Some actors are so unnerved by these events that they bring their Mommy instead of their underwear model/baby mama. It’s a little saddening, Galactica Actual. We should have compassion for their torment. If the Emmy’s, for example, existed during the crusades, the Iron Maiden would never have been invented.
Baryshnikov flexibility was out of this world 🌎 RIP the great Gregory Hines, we still miss you. Awesome movie loved seeing them both together being great in their respective professions and talents. Loved this movie
It’s 2020 now and I’ve been a fan of both Mikhail and Gregory for decades but Im not sure how this ended up on my suggested list. However, here we are and I’m appreciating this scene once again.
I don't know how this ended up on my suggested list, but so glad it came up - I remember *loving* this movie as a kid!!! This was the movie that began my Mikhail (Misha) crush! It was on some channel, and I taped it - ohmygosh anybody here remember VHS and VCRs???? - Anyway once I had it on tape I watched it on REPEAT like God knows how many times. I actually probably still have that VHS somewhere...Oh man, good times the 80's =]
The director makes an amusing statement in the audio commentry on the DVD. He says that actors get bored when sequences take a long time to film, causing them to lose consentration. Dancers, on the other hand, because of their repetitive training system, are used to doing the same thing over and over again until they get it right! He also said there's a truism, that choreographers are sadists, and dancers a masochists!!
Trained dancer? Barishnikoff was a star ballet dancer in the former USSR before defecting to the USA . He performed on the best stages all over the world . Trained dancer?.!
My Dad fought Gregory Hines in a High School Martial Arts tournament. Unfortunately, Gregory BEAT my Dad. So those kicks shows how talented all around Gregory Hines was.
There are three layers present in this movie that show the difference in cultures. 1: Russia vs USA 2: Black vs White (Although it's not a massive barrier between the Raymond and Rodchenko characters, they manipulate Colonel Chaiko's racism to getting Darya back), but it also shows the division in American culture. 3: Ballet vs Tap (For Ballet, people dress up in ballgowns and tuedos, but "The rich don't patronise tap" (quote from the movie), so people watch it in their normal clothes.
Yes Russia all disciplined and formal (while exquisite, ballet) vs America’s individualism expressed through more of that wild no rules self Expression (tap)
me three - only two posters were ever on my wall back in the day : Van Goghs sunflowers which came down for a haunting beautiful black and white photo of Mikhail B in full flight 💕💕💕 oh yah I’m sixty 😉
Baryshnikov in his formidable prime, and Gregory Hines just steps up and effortlessly blows him away. Incredible. (Also lots of eye candy here, lil' something for the lllllladies)
Nobody blows Mikhail away. Did you see Gregory hobbling at the end? Let's say this instead , the two of them together were great! And leave it at that But if you think anyone can blow Baryshnikov away , go back to the beginning. Anyone else would have been dead of strangulation, but Mikhail is solid muscle from head to toe
I went and saw this movie with a high school friend of mine in the evening after the space shuttle exploded and before moving the Germany 2 days later. Loved it.
I guess that's Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines warm up exercise and I really love how Mikhail Baryshnikov start stretching for a warm up he's flexible anyway 😊
Beloved Friend and Blessed Family ,, today a jet flew by above the tree line 🌲, it was metal with red lines- I will look up those colors on Google ❤ that up, but I remembered sharing it with a man- who I do not know.
I never get tired of watching these two dance💖✨💫
❤word!
absolutely beyond brilliant === two champions forever !!!
Even here, toward the end of his dance career, MB was physical perfection.
Two of the most exciting dancers in one movie. What more could one want.
Loved the dancing and music in White Nights. And that a white and black man danced as equals in this sequence.
Baryshnikov is fantastic and has always been a favourite! So fluid and elegant. Just beautiful especially ballet.
I can watch this video numerous times, but I still love it
Kudos to a great woman dancer/choreographer. This is her contribution to the film. Twyla Tharp.
I hadn't realized. Think she had talent here to work with?
Sad Gregory is no longer with us. He was so talented.
I have visited his grave in Oakville.
Never mourn a person. It is only your guilt for what you didn't achieve. You only celebrate the ones that pass over.
Oh and they are both laying around and then dance, tap or ballet..... OMG
@@seanwebb605where in Oakville?
@@dmorenod29 A Ukrainian cemetery near the Ford plant.
Unforgettable movie and Gregory…such a great dancer!! Miss you!!❤❤
I met Gregory. I talked with his mom on the phone once. Best experience of my life!
@@michellesmith6558 Wow, I’d love to know more. Anything you can share? 😊
Two icons, totally different, both amazing.
Leave it to the 80s to make a montage about men's dance seem as exciting as when Arnold starts strapping on grenades and rocket launchers.
Only these guys are real.
Actually more exciting
arnold's a wimp next to them.
Refreshing. Fight scenes are repetitive & pointless.
It wouldn't be an 80's movie without a work out montage 😁
Or leg warmers. 🤣🤣
I know this much is TRUE!
Βecause of them two together ,this movie, is very rare pearl in the history of cimema.
Agreed
It’s an unforgettable cimemory.
Highly highly underated!!! All around genius! Directing performances sets soundtrack choreography!!!👏👏👏👏👏🕺🕺🕺🕺
The 80's looks like so much warm and bright.

i saw that it was awesome

RIP Greg Hines, man we miss you, it's heartbreaking to see you gone (for now)
Ohhh 😔 did not know he passed away. So sorry, from Lima Peru
@Peaches J thank you. Appreciate it. May he rest in peace and dance in heaven with angels 👼. Passed away at a young age
@Peaches J so am I. 17 years later 😔.
Di he passed away? When and why? I did not know he's gone😣😢😭
@Peaches J thanks for the complete answer! So sorry! RIP Mr.Hines!
Greetings from Rio de Janeiro, BRAZIL

I watched the relegate scenes - stopped counting
Two of my objects of lust in a movie together? I was in heaven. Went to the movie theater MULTIPLE times!
why not !!!
And all of THAT was just WARMING UP!!
one of the best dance scenes ever.
Прыжки Барышникова прекрасны
Gregory Hines was underrated. RIP
They were both beautiful men
It’s 2020 now and I’ve been a fan of both Mikhail and Gregory for decades but Im not sure how this ended up on my suggested list. However, here we are and I’m appreciating this scene once again.
Greatest dance scene EVER in a movie. White Knights.
Great era, great music great guys, right the opposite from today......
Yo!!! Dudes!!!! this is just absolutey fabulous....doesn't matter how old we get...it is still just wonderful!!!
Great scene! Two people doing what they're best at + the indomitable spirit of the 80s 🙂
All the videos I've seen tonight are great but this is the scene that I think sealed the lust for Baryshknikov
Greatness forgotten. 2021 and there are kids who don’t know who either of them even are smh ...
Wow!!! Talent at its BEST 😲😁
Flashdance meets Cold War Espionage. Ahhh, the 80s!
Two of my favorite dancers!
Muy buen duo , excelente Barishnykov y Gregory Hines muy talentoso también. Una maravilla de película Noches Blancas . No .e cansa verla .

I was born in 05 and still had the privilege of watching movies from VCR's and listening to cassette tapes
A movie made by real trained dancers and can also act as we'll.
+TOJ72 Very we'll indeed. lol

Mikhail was so freaking GORGEOUS!

@Victor French Afraid I don’t know. But suffice it to say, Gregory Hines was an incredibly talented individual.
There is much I never knew about Gregory Hines.
@@psgary6622 yeah, he was a legend in his time.
Love the fact that he was talented at both martial arts and dance. Shame we lost him.
@@Bastion83 yeah, he was a rare talent!!!
This was a very interesting movie, I remember it. Not just the dancing, but how it's also a commentary about Russia and the USA.

It's not a documentary because it's quite biased.
Dove c'e'Baryshnikov splende la luce
loved this..these two together..🙋 💜
I was young at heart way back when when movie was out
Барышников - это Бог балет! Восхищение и восторг! Великий труженик!
Gregory could actually sing too. He was amazing!
I remember seeing this when I was a young girl , it's just as impressive now as it was then!
This is the most homoerotic thing I’ve ever….
Omg. Love it.
Barf
I love you Misha! 🥰
I used to have such a crush on Mikhail Baryshnikov, but I still love this movie. >_

Too bad they didn't keep this video going to show their fantastic dance together.

Raymond Greenwood and Nikolai "Koyla" Rodchenko played by Gregory Hines and Mikhal Baryshnikov.
SÓLO RECUERDO LA CANCIÓN DE ESTA PELÍCULA.. MENUDO PIQUE!!! SON PERFECTOS BAILARINES!!!!!
Cómo se llama la canción sabes??
The slow shoe sniffing has me wheezing!
good video I was younger when the video came out
misha is still alive and well and doing ballet.......
+misha jesse Collins No. He is alive and working in modern dance. He retired from classical ballet decades ago.
***** He's not really performing principle roles in classical ballet. He retired from that a long time ago. Which is fine.
He still goes to ballet class. I guess once you've done it that long it just gets ingrained.
When you think dancing is easy! 😂 TRY THESE MOVES!
Barishnikov, le plus grand danseur au monde...
Hines dances &sings "There's a Boat That's Leaving Soon for New York" early in this movie.
So sad that Gregory has gone 😢😢
This is and will be one off the best movie ever!! 🏴🥰👍😄
no turning point
now this movie is memory for me
RIP MR. HINES
Mikhail looks like he's gonna break tha barre. lol
Well, he is made entirely of muscle.
