fun fact. years ago (probably a decade) i listened to a jack white interview where he was talking about guitars. his choice of an ideal acoustic guitar is an old guitar that doesn't hold a tune perfectly. he likes the deficiencies. he believes the deficiencies add to the character of the masterpiece. so cool. this dude is an amazing artist.

That’s so cool, thanks for sharing that. I tune up my acoustic and ever so slightly, minutely de tune a string or 2, I always think it sounds better. Jack was totally onto something when he said that, I’m just not quite ready to actually beat up my guitar just yet lol!

That’s why it’s nice to have a million guitars haha. Even if a listener can’t tell the difference it feels different in the musicians hands and it’ll create different songs/sounds.

I didn't realize how good Jack is in an interview. He seems so reserved and enigmatic on stage. Probably just in the zone when performing.
I wish Jack White had a podcast where he had a conversation with all different types of artists each week. His drive and his artistic curiosity is liberating and challenging. He's an absolute delight!
Jack is someone who has a deep sense of responsibility in regard to art. This was one of the best interviews I've ever seen with anyone. What a thoughtful human being.Well done.

Did he interview them badly, though? Both those videos blew up and generated lots of revenue for Channel 4 (Guru-Murthy's employers) so in a way he did a pretty sterling job.
I agree with him about smartphones. Society's obsession with them is creepy to say the least.
I always think it would be a good basis for a horror movie. I walk my dog a lot (and never bring my phone) and I watch people at the park etc with their kids, pushing a swing, staring at their phones. Or walk by houses at night when the lights are on, and people mindlessly scrolling through their phones. it's weird and, like you said, creepy!

@@lin2thez341 I think people care too much about other peoples addictions, I use my phone to check stocks and play a game when i'm bored what's so wrong about that? You never know what people are doing on their phones they might be checking stocks 1 minute a day like i do and you might have seen that 1 minute, all of those people might have been doing that at the same time, coincidences do exist but of course the people that constantly look at social media and stuff are idiots and are creepy

Now *that* is how you interview someone. Find a genuine example of a complex, caring, thoughtful human being. Then just ask less than you listen. Best 45 mins of my day.
Jack reminds me of a close friend I lost a few years back (he was Catholic, I'm Baptist). We would discuss these topics and more, plus get a laugh out of the ridiculousness of people. I really, really miss my friend. I get a lot of comfort listening to Jack's interviews; wish we were friends and neighbors.
Mad respect for Jack White. His upbringing contributed to the musician he became. Kudos. His artistry is exceptional.
Seven nation army is still played at most football games and sporting events as a rally cry. It's amazing how popular and ubiquitous Jack White's quirky sound has become.
Jack seemed pretty uncomfortable and unimpressed when that guy brought up 7 Nation Army.
He probably didn't wanna talk about the Stripes.... and when he *does* talk about them, I think it's just me, but it looks like he's about to tear up a bit... I think it's just me. Yea? Okay. Just me. I'll go home now
It was a dumb question. He brings up his kid's knowledge of White Stripes, which is irrelevant and kind of an insult.
@@INADRM - that song has made him RICH beyond belief. From sports. He gets like $10 grand every time part is played at a professional sports game (basically every sports game every single day). He may hate it, but so what. Stop taking royalties then. Bill Murray said it best (paraphrased) - "being rich and famous, everyone likes being rich, no one likes being famous". If Jack eats because of White Stripes, and the British guys kid likes White Stripes, then talk about White Stripes bub...

He is a true artist , not the best drummer- not the greatest guitarist or songwriter......he is an artist...the very VERY best of our generation!!!!!.......he is able to adapt to the surroundings and become the beckon that is needed to become the accomplished musician that will take the music to the people...all the people ..all ages....all colors....my 11 yrold knows every word of 'boarding house..' and I thank you Jack , if you ever read this , to make an album that is positive and uplifting and still gritty and brutal in places..my 11 yrold daughter is thrilled to say that Jack White doesn't need to write dirty words or subjects and just a song about 'walking a dog' can become my favorite song over the past year and years to come !!!!......thanx Jack!!!......much love!!!!!...best of health to you and yours.....see you at Riot Fest here in Chicago soon , love the Racounteers !!!!......the new album is BRILLIANT!!!!!!!........
Jack is every interviewers dream because he keeps it interesting, His life's story is so fascinating and he’s pretty deep and naturally cool.

Jack White is one of the most unique musicians of our time. As human beings who fluctuate in looks through our experiences I cannot see where any one of us have Stones to Throw. He is beautiful simply through his talent which most could possess but are far too fearful to initiate. His physical features will ALWAYS be unique because that is how God made him. Unique is Beautiful. THank you for Rocking us Jack White :)

I already posted this, but Ill do it twice -- yes at concerts put them down. But Jack says he dislikes them and has never owned one and finds them silly.

I think the "no cellphone" thing is very pompous/misdirected/out of touch.
I like a lot of what he said here, I've seen him be harsher, hes pretty cool here; but cellphones are a tool - first i dont think he realizes how much he uses a cellphone indirectly each day, (through managers, assistants, travel agencies, etc). I dont think cellphones are evil in and of themselves, (they are totally annoying at concerts for sure, but being justified in saying "turn off your phone at the show", is a far cry form "don't own one at all they are silly"). And like being a vegetarian (a luxury not everyone on earth/through history can afford), he probably lives a life where he can get by without one, most of us literally cant...
He says he doesn't want to be a luddite - but that kinda seems to fit here - I cant help but think this might be tied to the "analog vs. digital guy" he was saying he doesn't define himself as... The guy who only rolls his own cigarettes.... Or only drinks craft beer... I'm curious what he uses for communication then instead?
I personally do not use my phone for games, I've never added a dog nose to a photo. I leave it on my desk all day at work barely checking it once. I dont walk and text ever, I dont talk and drive ever. I dont take films at concerts, (thats so annoying! I have taken a photo quick though). I dont talk loudly on it in public. I agree that there are terrible behaviors attached to cell phones. I dont do most of the "terrible/silly" cellphone behaviors.
So be clear that not everyone uses the cellphone the same. But the average person is pretty dependent on its functions in a lot of ways a "rich rock star" may not be... For example; he travels a lot. He is a new Dad. Does he not call home? (thats bad). Does he not Facetime/Skype his baby? Why not!? Does he write letters instead? (That's wholly unnecessary). Does he use his wealth to just use hotel long distance? (Most of us can't afford that). Or does he use his manager's cell phone? (Hypocritical). A cell phone is a very functional tool for someone who travels (see below).
There are also not payphones anywhere anymore. Or house phones. He has the luxury of being the guy people want to get a hold of so they will go out of their way to get him cellphone or not. *Like Bill Murray being able to not have an agent but set up his own 1800 number because he gets so many offers. But here on "regular people earth" most of us need texting and email to get a hold of people, and many of us have jobs that have to get a hold of us. And we need managers to help us find jobs Bill :)

How about the easy tricks i use all the time - I park my car I take a photo of the parking lot number so I remmeber. I see a book or record I like, I take a photo to remember the title.
I use my camera for stuff like that all the time.
I use it as a flashlight. I use it as an MP3 player now (Spotify). I lost my TV remote and had to use my phone as my TV remote.
Many people dont even have home phones. Ive been places where the only way to place a call then would be to borrow someone else's cellphone, (which i assume he does all the time, and defeats the purpose of his claim of being cellphone independent).
Not only for the phone function - but as a calendar - does he carry a weekly planner? Or again does he rely on assistants to tell him where to go? (If so we dont all have that luxury). What about alarm clocks? i use my phone as my alarm clock at home and on the road. Who wakes Jack White up? A rooster (luddite)? Or again does he always have a nice hotel room with an alarm clock, (many bands sleep in the van or fans floors). Or again is the manager calling him to wake him up? (The manager who used a cell phone alarm to wake up, so again hypocritical).
How does he tell what flights have been moved or delayed? i used the airline text heavily on a delayed flight last week. Again - he can judge because he probably flies private, or buses private. He doesn't have to keep track of his trips or arrange cars, just has someone else do it, (with a cell phone - if you see the pattern here), to tell him when and where to go.
How does he call his Ubers? or do they send him private cars? I nee my call phone for that, just to get to his concert. Cant call an Uber... Or does he drive himself like i do - and need the GPS (I actually have a Garmin GPS in my car, and everyone who rides thinks I'm 100 years old, "why dont you just use Google Maps" is the #1 question I'm asked in the car).
Its my photo camera. Its my video camera. Its how most indie bands would check their Twitter, Facebook and Bandcamp on the road to keep in touch with fans and promote their own shows -- he surely has the luxury of assistants doing that for him, (and they probably have laptops) - but again I feel he is probably pretty out of touch on that...
IMO I think he was correct to say "as the guy without a cellphone, i dont know if he should judge others". Did you really agree that cellphones are this kind of evil silly thing? -- Again they can be used in terrible ways. but they are just a tool, and probably the most functional tool in the history of man besides perhaps the knife.
Would we be better off still walking around with a watch, mp3 player, flashlight, TV remote, digital camera, video camera, planner, quarters, calling cards, travel alarm clocks, a laptop, etc.... thats just a stupid argument. Its all combined in this tool. I assume as a rich rock star surrounded by people/managers/etc - he is perhaps unaware of the need? -- and I'm sure if he hears a song and he wants to know what it is -- i have to whip out my Shazam app and find out myself; he probably just asks someone next to him, (who then uses THEIR Shazam app), so again i bet its pretty hypocritical of him.
i could be wrong, he could be totally off the grid, I just doubt it. I think this was a pretty hipster thing to say.

I thought I was intense. The White Stripes were always cool and identifiable. They weren't a small band, they just made big sound with two people. The White Stripes set the bar for power duo bands. Very stylish and quirky. Still a favorite.
Dynamite interview. The way Jack explains his work is excellent and makes a lot of sense as to why he’s been so successful.
Came here after watching the Thom Yorke Anima interview. Both Thom and Jack, absolute gems when it comes to the integrity they have for their work. One can learn so much for them.
Funny, I just read the interview with Yorke for the New Yorker. Thom Yorke doesn't read music and this guy is self-taught. It dawned on me that that is why they are amazing artists. Thom Yorke, in the interview, talked about the industry and how his managers came to him and said that the industry was changing (musical tastes etc). It's no surprise why the music is shite now, mostly compared to earlier, the lyrics, for me especially. The integrity has gone.

Never really been a fan of Jack White, but the guy talks a huge amount of sense. With him on pretty much everything here. Definitely agree on the cell phone addiction thing. I also don't have one, and never want one.

Great interview with a surprisingly down to earth and interesting interviewee. You might have thought he would be tired of rehashing his back story, but it comes across as very genuine. I assumed he would be totally self absorbed, but he isn’t and this video explains how he manages to get through celebrity without that.

My favorite Jack White interviewer is Conan O’Brien. The Charlie Rose interview of the White Stripes was great also. This one is equally as good. The common denominator is Jack White. He is just interesting.

Why does the description say "now of the Raconteurs"? He's literally been in the Raconteurs longer than he was in the White Stripes (at least from a recording standpoint). You must be a big fan, huh?
nope, the white stripes started in 1998 and the raconteurs in 2005. he played with Brendan Benson briefly in "Jack White and the Bricks" in 1998 but that wasn't with LJ or PK.

Jack was just listening. Pretty good interview and Jack seemed very comfortable with this guy.
Only the true White Stripes fans know that The White Stripes were the definition of rock and roll for yrs with 6 historical albums. Seven Nation Army isn't even half the story. The studio albums dont do them complete justice. Their live performances were some of the greatest of all time.

Seven Nation Army incredible tune. He never has to worry about being known for something. He will always be remembered for that song.. So many wants to be remembered. Jack White hit with that formidable number..But,he's more than that. Great guitar player with a huge appetite ego. But he's humble and dedicated in a pragmatic kind of way. Respect!

I loved the parts about Sinatra and Elvis. This guy is intuitive and about the deepest person that has ever been interviewed. His sublte comments about the Hollywood, do drugs, say youre sorry and then move on with your career, with a whole new set of fans, who are left with even less talent than before.
Jack is the first artist that understand how to say it above the head of the other person, the language he uses utilize definites of constants to gauge his tongue.
I hope I will meet him someday, he has the gravitaas of a universe.

Haven't seen a Jack White interview in quite some time but every time I do see one, including this one, I am always equally impressed by his outlook on life in general, his take on society, work ethics (in general) etc as much as I am with his amazing talents as a musician. He never comes across as being one who has "grown out of himself"; in other words, one who has lost touch with reality/real situations/his true self. I think we've had countless examples of just how hard it is for someone who becomes famous to stay grounded, to not forget where they came from, to not fall prey to the "limelight". I kinda think this guy might be one of the rare examples of how to handle fame and adoration the right way. I'm sure his life had changed immensely...for better and for worse. And, as far as wealth goes, who would blame someone for indulging themselves a little more when they have more to indulge with and that they worked hard to earn? But, he always seems to come across as not having lost his head or himself and I think that, in and of itself, is a pretty awesome accomplishment. I could be altogether wrong but if I am then he ought to consider branching out into the acting field because he could have some serious potential in that profession as well. 😉

WHITE...Literally one of the greatest ..most talented Artists all-time...Does absolutely everything..sings..plays ANY instrument known to man..song writer.. member of White Stripes and currently in 3 bands..( Dead Weather Racounteers and his own).. can play and sing ANY genre of music..punk..rock..Blues and incredible Acoustic live.produces all of his music.. produced Grammy winner album for Loretta Lynn. Owns his own Music company offering largest selection of vinyl records in the world..
and on and on and on....
BLACK.. actor in a handful of movies and played with an all-kid band Makes funny faces...uh....YUP, THATS ABOUT IT...

Great interview. My music is rock from the sixties and early seventies. Jack is one of the few artists I have liked afterwards. I have not followed news for the same reasons as Jack. Really good to see musicians who want a better world.
For the most part I agree with Jack about cell phones, but I do like to take a video of a song or two during a concert just so I can re-watch and reinforce the memory of the show (not because I want to tweet about it).
I was waiting for this particular interviewer to ask about Jack's past anger issues. I guarantee that would have been entertaining.

Jack White, a man who can play a guitar solo that sounds like no one else ever has, and who can write and sing songs that are honestly powerful, honest and original can recall the names of people who influenced his furniture-making.
I don't usually like listening to musicians talking, but I have to make an exception for this guy.
Jack is a true Renaissance man...articulate, interesting, intelligent and talented on so many, many levels.He’s appealing for multiple generations and a philosopher (very rare in this age). Side note...I’m SO on the same page with the loathing of cell phones!

Love Jack he has ethics and is so smart so eccentric.
Jack is 100% right about Detroit and the lack of stores--he isn't exaggerating. Still an issue today, but even more so in the 80's and 90's when he was coming up. There was a mass exodus from Detroit to the suburbs (or anywhere else) and the city became a food desert, where you could live in this major city and not have a grocery store anywhere near by. Maybe a corner liquor store, maybe a pawn shop, maybe a few restaurants, often fast food. No movie theater, no grocery store, no music shop, no book store, no clothing outlets. You had to leave the city and go to the suburbs for that stuff. Some of those things exist now, although mostly concentrated around Downtown Detroit. I just wanted to say my 2 cents because I know people think Jack White says those things to "build his reputation" or whatever. He's not making that up, I lived it myself.
I love the white stripes, I'm gonna miss that band. Thank God jack white gonna keep making music. He's so great.
