Appreciated the advice on hard light! A lot of my favorite work is from people who play with that aesthetic a bit. For example, I've been looking at a lot of Peter Lindbergh's work where he uses harsh shadow across a face to create shape and drama

Loved that you mention the goodness of hard light, not enough photographers talking about how important it can be for a shoot - such a great light to shoot in at times. ( Also back on the X-PRO2 for a shoot 📸 ❤️ ).
Cool Nathan! I like so much that captures and the model's look and style. The slow movement tip is very useful too. I never though about the concept but I do it always. On the other hand, I love Fujis. In the last years I've been using X100s, XT1, XT2 and now XT3. The quality, size and weight of these cameras encourage me to take more photos everywhere and all the time. Thanks and cheers from Buenos Aires!
Always a fan of your work. In this video you spent more time on the process, which I like personally. It’s your channel and normally what you put up is fantastic 👌🏾, so just do what you do Nathan. Thank you
A lot of information packed in one. Love it. Can you please make one video how do you expose the overlight areas? what are the things you takes care on that. Thanks again.
thank you my friend, this was a great video. it was very insightful and i did learn a few things. there is definitely a lot to learn here. thanks again, i appreciate your work very much.
Great video. I still shoot with my D800's in the studio and use a D610 out in the field. My "walking around" is an XT-2. Recently faced with upgrading those 800's, I decided the latest and greatest features of one of the newer Nikon's wasn't going to make that much of a difference. I mean, under controlled lighting conditions the increase in quality over the 800 is marginal, so I decided to get into medium format. Pentax 645Z. What a difference is all I have to say. The dynamic range and tonality is incredible with the larger, even if it is older, sensor.
That's awesome. I've flirted with the idea of MF, but I may end up going mirrorless, so the 645Z wouldn't be the direction I head, but I've heard good things about it.
I bought one of the original D600 when they came out, and Nikon wound up swapping it out for the D610 due to the shutter oil issue. I've had that camera nearly 8-9 years now?? Still going strong. Also, I still use LR 5.7.x and PS CS6, neither of which are supported anymore nor do they really support anything newer than the D750. :) The only MF I have are film. Digital MF is too pricy for me.
This was quite an interesting BTS with your analysis of the scene, the light and your reaction and use of it. Your modeling tips were thought provoking as well (I am going to try that slow-down thing). So while I appreciated your earlier "how I got the shot" ones I thought they were getting a little repetitive and this is fresh and cool. Enjoying your videos, Nathan. Cheers!
I have seen this video, over and over again.... so awesome content and beautiful model. Can you make one video showing how you do the color grade this shoots ? I know that you have the presets on your website for selling, but love to know your approach to building it and adapt to each shoot. thanks
Excellent production values and content. I prefer the location videos over the studio/retouching. Location content is more alive, the look is different, and the structure is focused more on artistic approach, composition, and planning for the final images. You hit a good balance between gear fanaticism and image creation. Thanks and keep the videos coming.
Absolutely superb Nathan, love this type of video. So many great tips and considerations, thank you so much! One more thing I would like to request is the editing considerations when post processing the natural light portraits in BnW please? #Londonlovesyou

Simple awesome content! Thanks for sharing! I love this kind of videos! Would love to see the retouch process on the first image at 5:49s What brand/model strap are you using?
Motivated movement, whether it's the subject or the camera itself, is very important for giving the photo credibility. Doing something, thinking about someone behind the lens, a childhood memory, a want or desire you have - all of this helps us engage with the final image. Otherwise it's just a girl with her dead-fish hands drooping onto her slack-featured face 😅 Excellent work all around on this shoot. 👏👏
I’m surprised to know the X-Pro2 is your favorite camera! I’m also surprised to see the shots you took with it! This is the camera I use and the only thing I don’t like about it is the battery life. :-) Great video, amazing shots! 😃👏🏽 I like this format btw. 👍🏽👌🏽
Thanks Dominique! Battery life isn't great, but it's still better than some other mirrorless out there, so I'll take it ;) I do have a whole stack of batteries though.
I've done it, but I didn't really see the point in it. If you already have vintage glass that you can use, then go for it, but I wouldn't search it out, I would just use the new Fuji lens'.
Hi Nathan, your videos make portrait photography feel much less intimidating. Would you consider a video for beginners on how to keep a shoot interesting with a model? By this I mean how to get ideas for poses, themes, props and just a general good fun vibe. Thanks Wes
Congratulations, I follow you from SICILY Italy;) I would be interested to see the xpro2 in the studio with the Flash .... if it is possible, thanks greetings
hello Sir, it's very helpful to me to improve my vision to shoot. Sir I have NIKON D7200 with 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 and 50mm f/1.8 lenses and I am, basically, a wedding photographer in India. And I have one 90 cm godox reflective octa and a godox 860 ii flash with trigger. I want to know, how I use this octa in Indoor and outdoor shoot ?
Great content as usual. Just a minor suggestion, the background music when you show the photos are a hair louder than necessary. I often have to lower the volume during that part and crank up your piece-to-camera.
Thanks Tung. It's so hard to adjust for every setup. On my system, both head phones and speakers, it was good, but I get that won't be the case on everyone's. I'll see if there are some more standard sound settings that I can use. Cheers!
Still rockin my d800 🔥 but eye focus and focusing is my main need.. what fuji cam will you reco to me? Ive got all my primes in d800 plan to sell it to make a jump thanks
I actually just moved from the D800 as my main camera to the Z6mII a couple of months ago. I don't really keep up with what's new in the camera world so not sure what to reccomend as far as Fuji goes.
@@NathanElson yes, moving slowly with purpose, great tip. I somehow ask the models to do something like that, but you just said it perfectly, now I have to find the best translation in French 😂

the fujinon kit lens 18-55mm is ridiculous soo goood!
I've never tried it, but I've heard good things.
Love both of the styles of video. I’m a beginner photographer and these have sped up the learning curve tremendously. Thank you!
Great to hear!
Liking your work Bjorn Lothbrok!
Hah! You’re the first to go with Bjorn, most people say Ragnar 😉 glad you’re enjoying it!
Love the shots with her face lit by the sun
Thanks Kheng!
I'm loving both series and keep them coming.
Thanks Jack. I have a few things coming out soon that change things up a bit, but these won't be abandoned in any way.
Bro thank you for sharing. Natural hard light is my favorite way to shoot
Thanks for checking it out Gabriel! Much appreciated.

Great video - loved the advice on slowing down. Also the hard light tips were great - I tend to avoid it, so it's helpful.
Beauty. Thanks Michael!
I love your Black and white "retouching" (preset).
Thanks Danisch! Glad you find it helpful.
