I love 45 70 but the price has not went down much but even during the pandemic it was one of the only rounds that didnt increse a lot during the pandemic i bought a few boxes of both the Barnes vortex 4570 300gr tsx fn it was 40 a box and the hornady 4570 325gr ftx was only 34.99 per box so its not to bad but when i compare it to 9mm 147gr fedral hst is around 30 a box for 20 rounds so if you think of it like that than the 45 70 is cheap in comparison its crazy to see the difference in price from town to town and state to state
‘Nasty rounds’ is definitely an understatement!! Wow! ‘ER Nurse to doctor: ‘Barnes 45-70 wound!’ ER doctor: ‘Next patient!!’ Thank you for sharing! Stay safe!🇺🇸👍🏻
45-70 the dominate Rex here. The Gelly didn’t have a chance. BTW great shot placement to get that done with three rounds my friend. First time I’ve seen results like that great results and commentary. Good catch on the FTX bullet. Both were some outstanding results. Good ammo there. Thanks for sharing. Be safe out there. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🇺🇸
Those both did a great job in the jelly. Honestly, it's hard to find a 45-70 load that isn't devastating, even "cowboy" ammo that's milder than the original black powder stuff. Big chunk of lead at moderate velocities just WORKS...ol' Elmer Keith was right about that.
That Hornady 325 grain is a bulldozer. I once talked with an elderly gentleman, also buying Hornady 325 grainers. I told him that I buy it for the accuracy. He said that he lives up in the mountain and that bears get in his yard and try to get in his house! He said he uses ammo that he knows that if he shoots them - one shot will put them down.🎯
Love it. Glad you caught the FTX, I thought it would make it through both blocks. Never have recovered one from an Iowa whitetail. .45 hole going in fist size going out. Great video . Keep up the good work!
I recently got a Henry single shot in 45-70 and I’ve shot both of those rounds. They are both beasts. And the recoil out of that single shot is mammoth. Absolutely love it! Great video.
Good lord Tools. That Barnes round was simply massive in its expansion and depth of penetration. While the other round was also good as the Barnes round won based on expansion for me. Whatever that round hits doesn't get back up. These Barnes copper rounds are really impressing me the more I see them. Thanks again Tools, you're awesome. Be vigilant, be safe.
One thing about the 45-70 is whatever it hits, it ain't leaving a blood trail. PLOP! A good shot placement on game will leave you with one hell of a field dress. Great fo Hog huntin!
😳That’s some devastating knock down power right there! 👍 Oh and I think the velocity tests for 45-70 is actually out of 30 inch sharps barrels, that might be why you were reading a good bit under the rated velocity.
This might be my favorite video yet. I have always wanted a Henry in 45-70. And this only makes me want it more. If I had to choose I think I'd go Barnes. But either would suffice! Love seeing big caliber jelly time!
over 25 years ago I got a navy arms Remington rolling block reproduction in 45-70.29 inch heavy octogen barrel, double set triggers, adjustable long range sights.if I remember correctly 13 pounds of beast, beautiful rifle. I called one of the top gunsmiths in the country on reloading it. I used Hornady 458 dia 300 gr jhp,73 gr of imr 4895 at a estimated volicty of2150-2200 fps and big energy power.sadly as gun trading goes I was offered a trade I couldn't turn down. the collector that got it will never part with it.papa wishing you well
@@ToolsandTargets I shot some 444 Marlin years ago. The guy who owned the rifle was replacing an old fence, so wooden fence post over to metal was the job. I'll admit some were rotten, but watching those rounds explode those post, sometimes breaking completely in to halves was just a spectacle to behold. That is another round you should check out. Ammo was cheap at that time. 9 to 12 dollars for a box of 243 Winchester at Walmart. The old silver box Winchester Super-x 100 grain Soft Point DRT on deer. I still have some of it!🤣🤣 444 Marlin was more expensive then but man were we having fun!
Wasn't that caliber the US Army service caliber in the late 19th century? 70 grains of black powder pushing a hard cast lead projectile. The modernized version is definitely some hot sauce.
Tools I don't know if they still make them but some years ago I bought some Grizzly brand +P 45-70 ammo with a 405 grain lead flat nose. The box said 2050fps. I didn't have a chrono then. I used my 1895 Marlin with a 22 in. barrel. If you can still find that load I'd like to see you test it. Tip-wear a seat belt ! Thanks again. You always put on a good show.
That's a beautiful Henry!! I don't think ammo companies have gotten used to most of us gun nuts owning chronographs yet so they still fudge their velocities a bit.
Lots of horsepower in those rounds Tools! Look forward to deer hunting with the Hornady FTX. Nice accurate round. Haven’t tried the Barnes, would if I could find them. Thanks for sharing!
Barnes are fun to reload, out of my ''22 Henry single shot my current load @ max is 2150-2200fps with the TSX 300gr and they are fun and NASTY lol!! I don't have a Siamese Mauser or Ruger #1 so I'm NOT pushing those any further! Thank you Tools, any 45-70 video gets a like from me!
I've got a bunch of the hornady 325gr. Going to try it on moose next year. Been using buffalo bore 350gr never recovered a bullet on moose. Complete pass through on broad side shots. The hornady are the most accurate in my guns.
Thanks for taking the punishment! For a 150 year old round, still a thumper! There is NOTHING in North America that cannot be taken with this, Heck, world wide!
Oh man. My brother bought a 500 Automax from Big Horn Armory. It was the first gun he ever bought lol. It's supposed to more or less replicate the power of a 45-70 but in a semi auto AR10 sized gun. The ammo is $5 per round.
Awesome video again. Man that barns expansion is like a 12 guage slug size. Also that is one gorgeous tool you have there. Keep the video going love your channel and can't wait till the next episode of Tools & Target's!
I love the 45-70 very expensive to shoot have to make every shot count 🙃 beautiful Henry 👌 I think that a lot of factory ammo is just not up to par as far as their speed is concerned grate video

I just ordered 45-70 460 grain+p from grizzly ammo that same company I sent you some of. Can wait to try it out. They claim over 3000lbs of energy. Compare to buffalo boar and double tap
Excellent video! I just got my Henry 45-70 and got it sighted in with the Barnes tsx 300gr. Can’t wait to see what these will do on mule deer and black bear in a couple weeks!
So... I was watching another video of the 44 mag in lever action. Both rounds put out just about the same amount of energy but in a much cheaper package
You can load up a 4570 in a modern lever rifle far higher than the top 44 magnum as far as muzzle energy is concerned. Just do the math.... muzzle velocity X bullet weight in grains / 450240 = muzzle energy in foot pounds. There is no comparison. Those heavier weight bullets are almost twice the weight at over 2,000 fps are alot more muzzle energy than the highest speed 44 magnum rounds.
I've had right shoulder repair years ago, am having left shoulder replacement next week. Just watching you take that kick is a horror show. OH THA PAIN! Would be a fun Gatlin gun, but that can NOT touch my shoulder. Thanks for the range time.
I've used that same bullet and grain weight out of my muzzleloader since the early 2000's for whitetail and I can tell you this there awesome. Most deer dropped on the spot.
Appreciate the content and video sir!! Can you tell me what stock cover you’re using over the brass end? Does it fit well, do you like it? Thanks again!
Just picked up some Underwood 225 + p extreme hunter supposed to be 2735 fps sure they're gonna hurt but not as bad as the 430 grain solids I have now that I have shot them the only time I will use them again is if I am being attacked by a big brownie or Squatch. Nice test tools good on ya 😉
My 444 marlin is no joke either. Got a quarter sized 240gr.Rem corlokt found under the far shoulder skin of spike elk. It was misting out and you could see 12" shock wave of water bounce off where I shot him. Awesome!
That Henry is beautiful, Those are some serious rounds, On your slo-mo shot with the Hornady round, I slowed it to 0.25 speed and the temporary cavity was simply enormous, It might be interesting to compare these to the BFR performance, Thanks for this excellent video, Stay Safe & 2A Strong. 💪 🇺🇸

Most 45-70 is tested in either 22-24 inch barrels, using factory ammo with a 26" barrel I can get a 405gr going 2100fps. But also a 300gr going about 2500fps as well, puts it well into 375h&h territory
I bought 2 boxes 4 years ago, I was shocked at the price of 32+ per box. I remember when I was in my 20's and could find a box of 45-70 for 5.05 to 10.00 a box. I miss those prices.
I have killed a 255 lb boar with the FTX, it was a 75 yard shot. I hit him broadside. His heart and portions of his lungs were soup. I didn’t recover the bullet but it was devastating and didn’t exit. It’s a snorty round in the 45-70.
My son shot a White Tail with his 45-70 shooting the Leverevolution 325gr. showed me the deer when he got it home. My first impression was, that is some exit hole. He said, Dad, that is the entrance and turned the deer over. Not much eating there.
I find it interesting that my Henry Big Boy in 45 colt can fire a Buffalo Bore Deer Grenade that is faster and delivers more muzzle energy than that Barnes.
I got my hands on one of the new ruger made marlin 1895 sbl's. I got some of the lever evolution ammo for christmas can't wait to get out there and hunt with her.
I just bought a 45-70 to deer hunt with. I have a feeling it doesn't really matter what ammo you use to hunt medium size game with, it's gonna devastate with any projectiles.
Dude, gotta get me one of those Henry 45-70 with a can full of Barns!!! That’s like sticking your thumb in!!!!!! 👍🫣 devastating round!!! Jelly did not stand a chance of walking away from that!!! 😂😂😂
Oh Lordy! Nice lever Tools 😁. If Jesus rode a dinosaur you can be sure he'd be packin' a .45-70! Ain't much that a .45-70 lever can't handle. That expansion is crazy!! 👍😎
Awesome video as always and very nice rifle . I have a Henry but a Long Ranger in .308 and I love 45-70 gvt and I have a Winchester 1886 🙂 and I use and like Hornady ftx , I will test the barnes if I can find some .
Mr.T-rex.....you might wana start runnin. I heard T&T lookin for some new dino-skin flip flops. Wooh buddy😥, That stuff is Nassssty. Thank you for the fireworks show bro.
You could take just about anything in this world with either projectile. 😂 almost all the dangerous African big game. Maybe not Hippo. Thank You for another great video Tools
Since I'm not a fan of Henry products I would be interested to see what those same rounds would do in "jelly" out of a 24" "JM" Marlin. Having said that, I still enjoyed this video and learned from it too! But I'll be sticking with my 336SS "JM" Marlin in .444 Marlin for my big bore hunting until I run up on its twin in .45-70.
$25 worth of ammo just for the Chrono test. Appreciate you Tools..👊
Why'd you have to remind me!😂😂😂

I don't think so after I started reading up on it.😎👍
No words can describe that Barnes.
😎👍
Dude, gotta get me one of those Henry 45-70 with a can full of Barns!!! That’s like sticking your thumb in!!!!!! 👍🫣 devastating round!!! Jelly did not stand a chance of walking away from that!!! 😂😂😂
Crazy power!💥😎💥
Oh Lordy! Nice lever Tools 😁. If Jesus rode a dinosaur you can be sure he'd be packin' a .45-70! Ain't much that a .45-70 lever can't handle. That expansion is crazy!! 👍😎
😂😂😂
Awesome video as always and very nice rifle .
I have a Henry but a Long Ranger in .308 and I love 45-70 gvt and I have a Winchester 1886 🙂 and I use and like Hornady ftx , I will test the barnes if I can find some .
Thank you sir. I'd like to have one of the Long Rangers too.
@@ToolsandTargets You won't be disappointed it's a very accurate rifle , but it does not like cheap/surplus ammo.
Mr.T-rex.....you might wana start runnin. I heard T&T lookin for some new dino-skin flip flops. Wooh buddy😥, That stuff is Nassssty. Thank you for the fireworks show bro.
💥🦖💥
Thanks for the test. The thing I don't like about the Hornady ftx is they blow up really easy
It did leave quite a bit if jacket in the jelly.
Are you sure that's a 20" barrel? Lol! Looks a little short! Great video!
How dare you insult the length of my barrel!😆😆😆
Great test. I know more than one guy that use that Hornady FTX for deer.
💥🦌💥
I have boxes of both but haven’t got a chance to use them for hunting yet. Hard to pick a winner out of those two. Great video!
Either one would definitely be driving the pain train!
Head for the hills!!
💥💨🦖
The Hornady should be called Chihuahua Red Rockets
🤣🤣🤣
You could take just about anything in this world with either projectile. 😂 almost all the dangerous African big game. Maybe not Hippo.
Thank You for another great video Tools
It's a monster of a round. Appreciate ya!
Love those Henry's. Awesome 👌rifles.
Me too!
😎👍
