  • If you pre-load and launch your bike off a drop, is it still a drop?
    Or, did you just turn the whole thing into a jump? My 2 cents on how to safely ride drops on your MTB.

    In a coaching session, I was taught to preload the front just before the drop. It counteracts gravity as your front wheel hits thin air and keeps the bike level. No manual, no jump, no moving body backwards. There’s a LOT of differing advice on drops on UA-cam!!

      yeah, I hear ya. Too many cooks in the kitchen. I would not preload the front, what happen if it on an off camber or slippery root at the top of the drop, etc... doesn't work all the time. My technic has work for me for last 30 years, I am sticking with it. Cheers, thanks for the comment. :)

    Great videos...when you are as good as you it must be hard to teach and wonder why it's not natural...I am an older new (to MTB) rider and still trying to "get it".

    I do like that you come off the drop level. That is super important. If you come off and your front wheel starts to drop right away then you are not learning back and pulling on the bars enough. I also like the advice of not being too stiff as you come off, keep the elbows and knees bent so you have room to make adjustments in the air. Perfect advice!!

    I have always felt that if you have the technique to drop and land flat off of a curb you can drop off of anything. Locking out the arms on the pull if the drop is slow is ok providing the drop is large enough to properly re center before landing.

    I live in NYC,so it was easy for me to start training clipping in/.out on some grass and dropping off curbs. As a rule I just never lock my arms,and I was taught to be able to move around the whole bike. I am about to get my first full suspension bike, so do you think I should get a brand new one? I do not want to spend over $2000 and want to go on a LOT of long distance rides, like 50-200 miles and better, with 1-6 other riders.I had a Cannondale F700 modified and I rode the same rocks, roots mud, and stuff as my FS buddies. Yeah, that frame tried to beat me up but I made it work and it was a superior in climbs....thinking about the Giant Trance 3..

      Oh yes, get that fully, you’re gonna love it. Giant Trance definitely would be a good choice. (Check on Giants warranty before buying used, I know they have a pretty good warranty system for new bikes)

    @cyclingskills - what is the reason for not pre-loading and treating a drop like a jump?

    • @cyclingskills
      @cyclingskills  9 місяців тому +1

      You don’t want to gain height, the goals is to get back to earth and have control. Imagine the drop being 8 feet high, no need to turn that into a jump, you just want to land safely.

    I've been caught out - seat too high plus assuming a simple small drop (all the others were) that was actually a meter high and had a step 1/2 a meter down plus not enough speed. My back wheel bounced off the step and kicked me up the butt then threw me over the bars. Fractured pelvis and clavicle.
    It was my first time on the track - so I should've "sessioned" it. But I was having too much fun. I should've also dropped the seat post which I tend to do more of now.

      Ouch, hope you have made a full recovery since then. Sounds like you learned a ton from that experience. Keep on keeping on 👍

    Great video for 1-2f drop. It is NOT a fare compare 1f and 10f drops. you started with preload and landed on rear tier on 3f drop 3:20 PLS make a video with 10f drop.
    Switch from 4k 30fps to 24fps would make this video perfect.
