The 1st "non choice" that she HAD to choose was stopping singing whilst her son was an infant - the visuals were the sheets of sheet music blowing out and away.
The 2nd "non choice" that she HAD to choose was the divorce - the visuals showed her sitting (whilst obviously singing) in a chair, the camera lingers on her hand - minus her wedding ring.
Her son is going to love this track, when he's older of course.

I'm so glad all the comments explained that this song is for her son. I heard her mention it today in an interview and I didn't understand fully until then. I still get teary-eyed when she says, "I changed who I was to put you both first, now I give up."
Adele is one of the few artists today who just commands attention with her voice.. no gimmicks, no overwhelming effects and production just her voice.. and you just stop and listen...
I really don’t think it’s an open letter to a current/future love. I think it’s a letter to her child. And she wants her child to go easy on her and forgive her for essentially splitting up the family. She’s singing it to her ex-husband as well but it seems to me like the primary person this is for is her kid.
Nice reaction. A little context on the video symbolism. The director of this video is the same as Hello. ( he loves his windy vids). In Hello, she arrived at the house, in this vid she is leaving and moving on. The phone conversation about cell reception is a call back to Hello as well, in this vid she says, here we go again, lol. Her humor is so much fun. The symbolism starts with the crow cawing in cinematic beginning, crows symbolize death and rebirth. Of course the Sold sign is clear, as she is driving away, the sheet music is blowing off without a care, leaving the past behind. She passes celebrations, a wedding couple, two free spirit girls all are reminiscing of times of youth, happiness and freedom that she had lost within her and is on her way to find. You picked up on the hand without the wedding ring, the transition to color in that section of course is the transition to the bright and hopeful future. The final camera move is to the fragile but beautiful crystal showing that although moving forward, it’s still a delicate place. The quiet undertones whether the viewer notices or not drives the imagery to see the emotion she is laying out vocally. The ending of humor was to rip the bandaid off of the heaviness. Not all is lost and somber in her life. Masterpiece video paired with masterpiece vocals sung over masterpiece lyric. My hope is that this single, which is in line with the songs of 25 will be the transition to some new sounds. We will see. Damn we’ve missed you girl.
she hit the spot perfectly with this song. We as young mothers seem to lose our identities when we fill the role of mom and wife.. I'm definitely not the same woman I was in my 20s when I had kids that I am now in my 30s. Its hard to put yourself first when you've spent so long being seen as just a mom or wife. I relate to her song soo much and I'm sure others do as well.

ADELE is the upper echelon of story telling. You could close your eyes and see a video of your own that encapsulates the emotions of what are coming from these vocals.
Yes Adele has a formula but there's no need to break that when you can engage with an audience this well.
Her vocals sound at their strongest to me also. Very interesting transitions and round off notation usages.

It's certainly an explanation to her son, also perhaps her ex, and ultimately herself for the guilt she feels of wanting to have her own freedom at the cost of her relationships. It's general enough where many can relate to this on some level. Nice! Also, the reactor did a pretty good job overall of interpretation after just listening and watching video for the first time (if that's actually the case).

I like that she begins and ends with laughter. At the beginning the phone bad signal is a joke...."HHHHEeeeellllloooooo". Then the blooper out take at the end is funny. She didn't take it easy on us with the emotion and talent so she cuddled us a little with laughter.

She was young, naive and rushed into things & was losing herself in the process. The line, "I changed who I was to put you both first, but now I give up," is a perfect example.

I wondered, while I know it's to her son, if it's also kind of facing the mirror as a reminder for her to go easy on herself. Sometimes it's easier to forgive others for decisions they made when they didn't have the tools & maturity to make wise ones, but hard to extend that same courtesy to ourselves when we did the same. Regardless, love the song & how well she pulls it off.
Questions is.... do we know whether the album was pushed back two weeks to allow ABBA some glory time? Originally rumoured to both be released on NOV 5.
One really interesting aspect of the video is the sheet music. It goes flying out of the car as she drives away and is also swirling around her as she sits. Does it mean she is losing it? Or is it what comes out at every transition? Interesting.
