"Amongst all this chaos, look at the beauty." Love that sentence. And I know what that means, I did a 2000 km walk four years ago and the beauty of the landscape makes the pain unimportant. Pain is just there and it wouldn't be as beautifull if there was no pain. Thank you for this film.

2011 was a record year for snow in the Sierras. It made the desert absolutely beautiful, but the high country was a slog.
We left from the Mexican Border May 5th and hit Kennedy Meadows a week before the Summer Solstice. On October 26th we reached Canada- Very late, and very very snowy!

You can live the life until you drop. When I was forty-nine years old, I soloed for three weeks in the Mohave desert in Arizona. I had precooked rice rolled in honey, a water filter, a back-pack, a tarp, and some earplugs. I'm proud to say that sixty miles after I began, I staggered into Peach Springs looking like hell warmed over. I used to say that the desert belonged to me, but from that day forward I knew I belonged to the desert.

Unbelievable film. This is the best documentation of the entire PCT thru hike I have seen. Very professionally done. The photography was amazing. I did the WA portion of the PCT in 2012 and appreciate how you capture so much of the real experience. I am blown away by how well your photography was while you were pushed to the limits physically and emotionally. Just finished it and will watch it again on the TV with my wife. My daughter and her boyfriend are preparing to hike the entire PCT starting in a couple of months and I will get her to watch this. Truly inspirational.

I just can't get enough of this film! Not only have I shared it with hundreds of people, included dropping it nonchalantly into most conversations, but I myself have watched it multiple times. Each time I find myself sobbing at the pure freedom that lies at our backdoors while we all shuffle to conform to our everyday inherited routines only to buy things that show our status class amongst ourselves while we surround ourselves with people we only seek to judge our own equities against. To laughing hysterically at the most minimal mishaps that I feel like I experience with you. I know I just left a comment earlier today but I keep finding myself coming back for more, wondering how something so enlightening isn't being screened in Hollywood theaters! I cannot express the pure enjoyment I get out of knowing that pure nature still exists. Not only in the country we seek to drive through as fast as we can to reach our populated destinations, but forged in the spirit of the few that seek true freedom. I have to admit I have conformed recently. Coming from being homeless to making 60k a year in 2 years time has been an absolute miracle and blessing. To say I don't appreciate it would be inhumane. But to say I don't feel a little ashamed of the hermit I've become would be a lie. I dropped out of high school many years ago to seek adventure and see the world through diplomatic change in the Marine Corps. When that ended I was left with questions, and questions only. I made myself this way, which means you can always change your perception on what you see as successful. You two did thay for me in a time that I thought I had seen the light I was completely blinded by your souls light for freedom. Thank you in a million ways for the awakening. You've brought meaning to my life once again and I cannot repay you enough. Happy trails mates hope to see you out there sooner than later.

Sorry for taking so long to reply to your thoughtful message. Somehow it got lost here. That said, it made my day reading this. Loved this. I watched "the Wild" with Reese witherspoon 2 days ago. I am 40, and I spent my teens and twenties fighting addiction and depression. I live in Michigan so its a great place to hike. Beautiful film gentlemen.
I was going to take on the AT earlier this year after my job moved away. Before I set out on my trip I was diagnosed with cancer. Luckily everything was able to be taken out surgically without chemo and I now have a clean bill of health. My dad and I managed to do a 5 day section hike in the Smokies on the AT since then and my heart has yearned to return there everyday since then. I feel a little catharsis after watching your film and many times I felt I was alongside you. Take care gentlemen and I wish you many more safe adventures.

this is my favorite pct video yet. Very well put together and the style of coverage you choose to do was a great perspective for the viewers. Loved the in depth details of certain parts and the length of footage put together, especially on the parts of all the help that was graciously given through trial angles, hitching, and housing. We hosted a young lady from Germany last year. We picked her up hitch hiking in Wrightwood Ca. She made it the entire trip, sending us photos along the way. This film is so wonderfully done. I love the narrative, your spirits and the photography. This should have gotten an award. Beautifully done. Bravo!

Amazing...Just Amazing! This is the best backpacking movie/documentary I have ever seen! I just started backpacking a few months ago and I love it. I hike the AT but it looks like a whole other world on the PCT. This documentary is very motivational and a can't wait until I can go on my first thru hike!

I lived and worked in Tuolomne Meadows of yosemites high sierras. I met many PCT hikers that pass by, I myself enjoyed backpacking and hiking very much, I have always been inspired by the female PCT hikers i met, i admired their courage. Your video was just another reason why i should do it, thank you for sharing happy trails!

Great film, as a young woman back in 1970 I wanted to hike the Appalachian Trail, but life was in the way and I never did.
I just discovered the PCT from reading about Cheryl Strayed and Reese Witherspoon collaborating on a movie, in the Costco magazine. As soon as it came out on DVD I watched it. As I perused UA-cam I ran across this documentary.
I am living the hike vicariously through you guys.
    Thank you.

I caught your video by chance tonight... actually, I was looking for rattlesnake video of Idyllwild/San Jacinto Mountains. So... I thought I would watch a few minutes of your vid to see some mountain terrain of San Jacinto.
Well... here I am an hour and a half later... I watch the whole movie, all the way through.
I cannot elaborate enough how much I enjoyed everything about your film; narration, cinematography, image quality, story line, drama, humor, camaraderie etc. etc.
Thank you for making this film, and thank you for sharing it in it's entirety here on UA-cam for all to enjoy... thank you.

John - Your words have made brightened an otherwise gloomy morning here on the east coast.
The goal in setting out to make this film was to capture (as best we could) the essence of a thru-hike. From the pictures, footage, narration, and original soundtrack. In the end, we hoped this real story would inspire people to get out there and make a connection with nature. For both of us, it's been an ongoing and life-changing experience.
Again, thank you for your kind words and taking the time to watch this film. Continue supporting As It Happens TV content by sharing this film on the Pacific Crest today!

AsItHappens.TV Thank you for your reply. I enjoyed your film so much that tonight I shared with my wife. And as she knows... sometimes I can be into strange things... I am after all a rattlesnake hunter for pics and video, attraction to the preservation of rattlesnakes is just odd to some people.
So, as we settled in to watch your film, I could tell she was apprehensive... but within 15 minutes... It was great, and we enjoyed your documentary together. Denise and I ended up watching your journey all the way through (no pun intended).
Please tell me... did you do your own video (filming) or did you have a camera man? Who did the editing? Are you planning on another journey? And if yes, can you share your hopes and dreams? I have to commend you on the narration... from the heart and soul... made the film that much better, like... I was there.
And one last thing... just curious... are you Ian, or Andy?

    • @AsItHappensPCT
      @AsItHappensPCT  9 років тому +1

John Delgado Haha so many questions! Happy to answer.
For starters I'm Andy! The founder and director at As It Happens TV, also co-founder of The Dusty Camel.
For the Pacific Crest Ian and I had just one camera.
In the beginning we passed it between the two of us, but around mile one thousand I started taking on most camera responsibilities. The PCT is where I went from being just a writer, to also a photographer.
When we landed home I had a about 200GBs of footage and photos to work with.
It took over a year and a half for me to single handedly write the narrative, musically score the entire film (www.asithappens.tv/music/), edit the footage and process all photos with the 2.5D animation. It was a huge challenge. For me, even harder than actually walking/filming the thru-hike.
My ongoing work with As It Happens TV is based in films that inspire immersion in nature, or stories that change perspectives on it.
For me, genuinely connecting with nature has made me a stronger, humbler, happier, more compassionate, and fulfilled person. This is why I continue handcrafting content.
If I can inspire people to go out and connect with nature, or share a story that shifts the perspective on it, maybe those people will experience some of the same personal transformations I have.
Hope this answers your questions John - If you have any more, fire away!
Thanks for watching and supporting As It Happens TV

AsItHappens.TV Of course I have more questions... I will always have questions for you.
I am 58 years old and since watching your film, I can think of nothing else. The Pacific Crest Trail calls to me. And you wanna know something... I am born and raised in Northern California, City of Ukiah - Mendocino County... and I have never heard of the Pacific Crest Trail until the other day when I happened to catch your marvelous story here on YT. Haha... aint that just the darndest thing.
I will have questions for you... but for now... I'll wait.
I do have a rhetorical question, I'll explain... I would ask you 'what is the meaning of life?' - However, the question is rhetorical because I believe you know, but I don't want to know your answer. My answer to that question is somewhere on that trail... and it waits for me, when get there and find it... it is then that I will know the answer.
      I'll be in touch...
      Thank you Andy.
Please contact your friend Ian and tell him thank you for me.
I can't believe you guys had to look up on YT how to gut a trout - hahahaaa... that's awesome :-D

I recently came to the realization that I need to get my self back in to the wilderness and out of a bustling city life where have lived for the last several years. While looking through UA-cam for others great adventures I found this. If there was ever a thing of inspiration to push one to do what you feel necessary, then this is it. You all took risks above what normal people would have ever done, but you also created a story that will forever define who you are. Not only did you inspire me, but you have motivated me to begin a new chapter in my life, one that will create stories, not as big as yours, but stories none the less. I can't wait to get out there in my next adventure and live in the moment, thank you!
