Square knots were becoming a thing towards the mid 80s. I got World Crest, Ad Alter Dei, Conservation and for top achievement, OA, and a couple others. Me and another Scout were recommended for a Life Saving medal after an incident at the lake we used to spend the summer at. Me and my assistant senior patrol leader saved 2 ladies from a capsized boat and I resuscitated one of them. It was a big deal to the parties involved, but there was no media attention or anything. I imagine if there was media attention we would have been awarded the medal with a huge ceremony, etc. Oh well.
I'm a new dad in Cub Scouts. I have been in the cub and boy scouts back in 1979 to 1984. My question is, I've done over 30 of the online training videos, and what knot can i work for right away? Thanks.
Thank you so much for stepping up and becoming a highly valued leader in Cub Scouts. Every scout deserves a well-trained leader. Some of the knots you may want to look into are Cub Master and Den Leader. Training is a big part of leadership and the knot rounds out all of the extras that are needed to be an essential leader. The Leadership Training knot can be earned in Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venture, and even Sea Scouts. Most of that is done online and live. Thank you again for stepping up and being the best leader you can be. YIS⚜
A fascinating question, somewhere between 23 and 32 currently. There are many different variations of each award. For instance, the Eagle Scout square knot has about 10 variations. The background color is different to accommodate different uniforms along with the outer border for NESA membership. The supply division of the BSA doesn't mind that there are so many because they sell them. I have seen collections of square knots that ranged from 40 to over 100 or more. There's also a whole series of “square knots” that are not official. Thank you for such an interesting question. YIS⚜
Lion leadership is complicated. The structure is parents-co-leader for up to 9 lion meetings of the school year. In the Lion Den Leader Guide from the BSA. _“Den meetings and outings are facilitated by a Lion den leader. The Lion den leader is an experienced Cub Scout leader. He or she will lead the first Lion den meeting of the year. The Lion program supports co-leadership for den meetings and outings with the Lion adult partners.”_ (www.scouting.org/programs/cub-scouts/den-meeting-resources/lion-resources/) Because the structure is set up differently than the other den leaders it's not eligible for the Den Leader Training Award knot. I don't know if they are working on setting up a Lion Den Leader award. But they should… they have knots for all the other positions. YIS⚜
I have heard that rumor for the past two years. I think the supplier has stopped production. They need to find a manufacturer here, instead of from China. The price will triple in cost, but how many would a scouter need? If they phase out the pins, they automatically phase in duplicate square knots. Only time will tell. YIS⚜
Great one! Thanks, Stan. I’ve been motivated to get this knot, and I’m on track to receive it at the end of the year.
Excellent! Thank you for your service to Cub Scouting. YIS⚜
WOW!!!! This is great stuff!!!!

Are lion leaders able to earn this knot??

@@ScouterStan I found an update to the den leader training award knot. They added lion leader with a tenure no less than 8 months
They are getting rid of the the pins for the knots
