I was a police Explorer for one year. Our troop hosted the police Explorer post. It was cool. We were issued an NCPD uniform, badge and duty belt. We worked roadblocks for parades and other special events, etc. We trained like we were going to the police academy. This was in the early 80s. Most of us went on to be police officers in our city and around southern California area. I became an officer in a very small 8 officer department in a village in New Mexico. Here in NM we have villages. Just like a small town, but more rural. I'm in Billy the Kid country and sometimes it felt like the late 1800s. Lol!
Many years ago, I was an Explorer Advisor for Post 121 in Brooklyn. It was what is now called a “High Adventure” post, concentrating on outdoors activities like camping, hiking etc.
Explorers High Adventure Post… I recall seeing many of them at Philmont back in the 70s. Today I think most of them are called Venturing crews. I have just seen an old Philmont movie (Beyond The Tooth of Time - 1963) with High Adventure Explorers in it. Here is the link (off-channel) ua-cam.com/video/0fB6QKta7Po/v-deo.html let me know if you like it. YIS⚜
I was an LE explorer from 2007-2011 we would go to these competitions and compete against other posts in various topics related to LE. I was a founding member of my post and since then the advisor had spread the program to over 100 explorers. I had friends who were FR explorers as well and they would tag along on fire calls. Explorers is such a unique program that I wish more people knew about it. If you ever want to get together and talk about modern day exploring let me know. I'm still friends with my old advisor I could get you in contact with him as well.
So glad you enjoyed that video. I'm planning to do one on Law Enforcement Explorers next season. When I get into the research phase I may call on your resources if I get stuck. I have a former scout that I mentored to Eagle Scout that was also a LE Explorer. He is now working as a local police officer. I'm looking forward to the episode. Thank you for your kind offer. YIS⚜
I really wish I had the chance to be an Air Scout. I still plan on getting a pilot's license and I did do the Aviation Merit Badge, but man I would have loved to do a program dedicated to it. Also, the uniforms are awesome. I may be retired from the BSA, but if they brought back Air Scouts I'd be the first person to sign up to be a leader.
I was a Fire Service Explorer 1995-1999. Loved it!
Very cool! YIS⚜

I'm using the joke at our Monday meeting.
