How much does it cost to live in the beach town paradise of Da Nang, Vietnam for 1 month?
If you live in a western country one of your main concerns is probably money, but in Vietnam you don't even have to work that hard to have an amazing life here.
I break down what it costs to cover all the major expenses for 1 month: house rent, motorbike rent, food, gym, drinking, and a few other extras.
Gym: Elite Fitness

Beach bar: Paradise Beach

Goi Dau hair wash: Que Spa

VISA INFORMATION:
I'm currently on a 3-month tourist visa. Every 3 months I leave the country and come back in on a new visa. The total cost for the entire process is about $200. If you need help with a visa send me a message.
HEALTH INSURANCE:
I recommend having health insurance while living abroad. Basic coverage in case of emergency will cost about $200 a year.
Travel insurance I use for short trips out of country:

Hi my name is Travis and I have been living in Vietnam for almost 5 years.
I love learning about Vietnamese language and culture and exploring as many places as possible.
I make UA-cam videos about vietnamese food and try to meet local people while traveling around the country.

How do you stay there long term with their current visa policies?
Americans hate big government and communism. and always forget that Vietnam have big government and communism😂
@@carkawalakhatulistiwa Americans say they hate big govt., but they don't. :)
What do you do for fun? Just sitting at a beach gets boring after a while and with a limited budget it sounds boring just riding a scooter. Those grocery stores will be way oit of your budget. No thanks
@@carkawalakhatulistiwa The U.S. IS big government. They tax us too much and it has too many laws that restrict us.

My Mrs and I stumbled across Da-Nang and absolutely loved it! Lovely people and amazing beach and restaurants and bars. Ended staying for 3 weeks!
$750 a month was my budget when I lived there. I didn't go out too much - maybe once a week. It was a tight budget, but for $1,200 a month you could be living your best life in DaNang.
You're spot on. 750$ is definitely manageable if you're not drinking or eating western food too often. 1200$ you're pretty much balling
@@TravisTravelsVN Western food is a scam.
What about hiring domestic help to cook and clean your home about 2 or 3 times per week?
Wow....thx for the Information. I live in Switzerland. My Rent is $ 2000. This is living alone with no Family. All cost are propably 4-5k / Month...so I guess with 2k I would have a perfect live in vietnam.

$1200 is being a passport bro roach in Southeast Asia. Less than that makes you a pathetic loser with zero chance of lasting out here. Stay home with mommy if you can’t come up with $1700-$2000 a month minimum. F’ing choads.

55 years ago I lived the good life in Vietnam. Free food, free accommodations, free travel anywhere in South Vietnam and Cambodia. I agree. Vietnam is incredible safe. My family from Chicago always ask about safety, I say much safer than Chicago haha. Thailand is definitely worth a visit. Its very cool you bring your family to visit Vietnam. Not so many americans willing to venture out this way.
Thats why you find medium/small size towns and villages. Not everywhere is Chicago or LA
@@TravisTravelsVN my American cousins live in the Western suburbs of Chicago and strike me as really paranoid about safety. I told one I was going to island hop in Greece and he immediately asked if it was ‘safe’. I said there were more murders in one weekend in Chicago than you’d get in the Cycladic islands in a decade. It really is a thing that a lot of Americans still think ‘abroad’ is a scary place (maybe it’s your closeness to Central America which CAN be quite intimidating).
Americans tend to assume everywhere else must be worse than wherever they live

As someone with some family money who might be looking to make it last into my old age, videos like these are pure gold.
you're right, with 800$ a month we can live comfortably. I'm living in Ho Chi Minh city, I just spend about 600$ monthly.
That's pretty good. If you're able to live like vietnamese, live outside of main areas and eat vietnamese food everyday, it's possible to live a lot cheaper than I talked about
Breakdown 600 a month in ho chi Minh... I can't see that being comfortable at all for foriegners
Indeed 600 euros seems impossible in Ho Chi Minh City-unless you live very far from the center and in a very small room…
You came to Vietnam to live in poverty?
Your 100% correct!.. living amongst people who dont like us except maybe Chinese etc... then existing on that money is simply ridiculous..@dominichoward4833

@@TravisTravelsVN hey Travis, I have been thinking about moving to Thailand for a few years. Italy was my first choice but Thailand is was second , until this past year discovering so much good stuff about Vietnam and its explosive economic development and its strengthening military ties with the west. It’s going to be an incredible place to be and I dare say invest in the coming decades. I can’t wait to see more about you and hear your story. I moved to Argentina 15 years ago and invested in apartments and a walnut farm. I got out just in time… Now I’m back in San Diego. The problem is politics…I can’t take it much longer 🤮
Happy to see the channel growing, Travis!
I'm a homebody, so I don't go out often except for the occasional breakfast/lunch/dinner at my favourite Vietnamese street shops with visiting friends, and grocery shopping once a week. Been hanging around in Da Lat, because of the nice cool weather. If you're by yourself, and can live in a small space like a micro apartment, under $500/mth is extremely doable. I'm clocking in at about $300/mth, not including the big one-time purchases like kitchen appliances, motorcycle, furniture, but even these aren't expensive in the least.
Rode through most of coastal Vietnam in 2004. Hanoi to Hoi Chi Minh and then down the Thailand. It was affordable then and Hoi Chi Minh was a steal. It wasn’t as popular as it is today. All those condos didn’t exist back then. It was just dense forest or sand. But there was a newly paved rood that went on for miles along the coast. Cam Rahn Bay was just about to break ground by the looks of things back then. There were just billboards along the shoreline indicative of what was coming. Lots of Expats were already there. Lots of kite surfers in Mui Nui living on healthy meals and beer.
Can’t wait to go back
Great comment. Yes its surprise how well the roads are throughout vietnam, even in the farthest corners of the countryside. Mui Ne is still a relatively small and relaxed area but all of Vietnam is developing quickly
I went all over Vietnam in 2002. Went back in 2016. Could not believe how much it had been built up and how much more it cost. I bought tons of clothes in Hoi An in 2002 (shipped them all back). A suit was like $12. By 2016 it cost more than Thailand!
@@boltyboyyes, the writing was on the wall back then. I was there to trace my dad’s movements between 66-70 and Hue as he was there for the Tet: I was riding with a Vet who was stationed in Tue Hua. I recall Hoi An having French influences and found those French cafes by the tidal river. Croissants! The clothing was so cheap. I just knew it would all end.

I'm a first generation vietnamese-american in my family. born and raised in Texas and have visited Vietnam only 3-4 times. my parents both worked at a nail salon while I was growing up. I'd say my parents are middle class in America but when we'd visit Vietnam it felt like we were the top 1%. it always amazes me how much more value our dollar carries in other countries. When I get established in my career I definitely plan on taking my gf to Vietnam for accouple weeks for a vacation, i just HATE the flight time, i think the last time i visited my parents took 3 separate flights and it took us 21 hours from DFW to Vietnam.

The problem with Vietnam and other similar developing countries is the hygiene. I got very sick there with amoebic dysentery which is caused by parasites. I picked it up on the first day in a five star hotel. It took me over 4 months on very powerful antibiotics to get rid of it once I returned home. My doctor had to import the meds. I would hate to be living there if something like that happened because the healthcare is not that great. If my doctor struggled to get the medicine you’d have no hope there. I looked it up and 80,000 people die from it every year in developing nations because of the lack of healthcare. Health insurance is a must in any of those countries which I noticed you didn’t add.
Definitely true, you can't drink tap water. There's a lot of street foods I wouldn't trust. But overall if you know what to avoid them no problems 🙂
Overall Vietnam is much more developed than people think. I hope to make that clear in future videos
@@TravisTravelsVNwell I got in a five star hotel. I think I just had bad luck as I was in a group of four and I was the only one that got sick. It’s worrying though . I’d hate to get really sick there and be unable to get proper healthcare etc
Why did you wait til you were home? It has been my experience that local doctors know way more about treating those conditions than doctors at home who have never dealt with it. They also have the drugs available locally to treat those common things. Back home, pharmacies aren’t going to have the required drugs on hand cause they don’t need them often.
@@missmayflowerok well didn’t know that but anyway I had no idea what it was till I was home and got tested because it wasn’t going away. I thought it was just upset stomach and would get better by itself.

Great, keep in touch and let me know if I can help with anything
Pretty much any island in Indonesia or Philippines is same price range so there's tons of places you can live like that on the beach for less than 1k as long as you avoid capital cities and tourist hot spots.
Agreed, Indo and phillipines have some really great spots, but not as much convenience of a modern city. Gyms, restaurants. I would argue food here is insanely good and cheap. My main point is cost relative to quality, not just lowest cost
@@TravisTravelsVN Most condos in phils have gym and pool included in rent. In Manila apart from the main huge pool and gym there was a smaller pool and gym on the roof of my building if I didn't fancy walking to the main one.
In terms of food, as someone who has lived in Vietnam also, I think Vietnamese food is the best in the whole of Asia. Not just SE Asia but all of Asia full stop.
Some people rave about Thai food but its 2nd on the list to Vietnam. Everything organic and even a simple Sandwich (Banh Mi) from a street stall smells like perfume.
@@TravisTravelsVN i loved your gym, with the sauna. $30 mth is the cheapest for sauna access, pool. is anywhere else cheaper , i never heard of any.....
I am with you, I have been traveling south east Asia for about 3 months now and very consistently I have had the worst rice that I have ever had from restaurants as cheap as 2-3$ a plate all the way up to 25-30$ a plate. It doesnt seem to be a price thing just a if you get lucky and they just made a fresh batch thing. Back in Vancouver I would have returned many of the rice dishes for being substandard. @73dlb
As someone who has been to the Philippines many times and have relatives there, it´s not as cheap. Food prices has gone way up since the pandemic, and utilities are more expensive. Very nice country, but more expensive than you think. Also the internet is really crap compared to most other countries outside Cebu and Manila (Which ideally you want to avoid). You can find local street food at roughly the same prices as Vietnam, but that would be food most westerners find way less appetizing than Vietnamese food.
These are my favorite type of channels. Great video! Subscribed!

Awesome info bro. As a younger American millennial/gen Zer its kind of a bleak outlook here economically. I'm currently making more money than I've ever made but can only afford to rent just a bedroom here in California. I've done the whole 'move to a cheap small town' thing, but I wasn't really enjoying life because there's not much in cheap small town America. I once spent a few hours on the beach he is on. Notice the haze in the air? That is pure humidity. I spent eleven months in Da Nang during 1970 / 1971 and I have never experienced heat and humidity like that before or since. It looks nothing like it did back then, no surprise there, eh? It is truly beautiful, amazingly affordable and English is spoken enough to not pose a problem.....I find that very surprising considering. I would like to go back but only during the winter months.
I lived in Da Nang in 2018. For a start most apartments have really shit kitchens . Eating out and eating western food is very expensive. So learn to like street food.

September-December very rainy. Most of the year is pretty good
@@TravisTravelsVN So basically it's Vancouver but the average house price isn't near $2 million, plus it's way warmer? Sign me up!
Hey buddy this video is appreciated for me. I served in the Navy my whole career, and there few countries that you can have a decent life and Vietnam is one of them. Bravo!
Thanks for the comment sir very much appreciated👍😃
You gave me ideas with this video, dude. Real good job
lovely comment, I'm glad to hear it. Hopefully gets the wheels spinning a bit...
Spent a year in Da Nang, absolutely loved it, probably my favourite place in the world. Only down side is the summer is ridiculous, I'd always feel like I was gonna faint at feels like 40degrees. Curious to know whats the common visa people use now a days?
hows the surf and beach? is the surf consistent?
Surf is pretty steady at least half the year. Pretty casual but I see dudes everyday shredding
Charlie don’t surf.
Im 31 years old, and a life long born and raised Canadian. I came across you guys and 3 other channels with dedicated videos of living in Da Nang. I genuinley after watching this, have dedicated my next 5 months to saving, selling and moving there full time, well... 3 months at a time. I have never traveled much in my life, and this place looks simply incredible.
E-Visa applied, Safety Wing subscription applied. I am doing this!

Very good video Travis! I enjoyed the pace, the editing is really spot on, your explanation are short and interesting. I am happy for you that you got that many views, clearly deserved it. I wish you the best!
Very kind comment thank you for that!
So many bullies in the comments 😢 Congrats on your first viral video! The first viral one I had a couple years ago was also about cost of living, seems to be a hot topic everywhere in the world. People are looking for a better quality of life with the money that they have.
plewaswe point out just reading peoples thoughts and options have yet to read any bulling.
Thanks for the comment. Everyone entitled to their opinions and judgements. No worries on my end 😃👍
Looks amazing Travis, thank you so much. I been to Danang more than 8 years ago. It is a very nice city.
It's $9 for a kilo of tomatoes in Melbourne Australia and the average rent gfor a house is ~$1800 a month. Screw this place, I'm leaving.
Trying to tell people man... there's an easier way. Life doesn't need to be a constant grind
yeah but cashier in vietnam makes like 400 € month while cashier in australia make probably more then 2k.
Just that shampoo massage was 4 dollars per hour. IF you take tax and waiting time out of it she paid 3 or less hour and still need to pay for shampoo water and building. So she does not make that much money 2,50 hour if she works 200 hours its 500 € . If she did it in america she could be probably paid atlest 40 € an hour. with 20 € full profit 200 hours would be 4 000 dollars os its easier to pay rent in your country with that money :D .
@@maros495 What is your point?
@@user-kw1gp3dq4o My point is if you take a numbers same lifestyle in australia left you with extra 1000 and in vietnam 300 in debt.
so you leaving australia would get you even worse in vietnam. thats my point.
@@maros495 I wouldn't be relying on work income alone mate, I would be relying on retirement savings, and I would also work. The median wage for a science teacher in Vietnam is ~$4200 AUD per month (68,000,000 VD), and these positions are in high demand. Once I paid out the cost to set up in Vietnam I could live very well in Vietnam, particularly if I brought my own place to live.
Got a sub bro. Keep up the good work
Thank you brother I appreciate it
Vietnam has many other nice beach cities other than Da Nang. For example: Nha Trang, Quy Nhon, Mui Ne, Vung Tau, Ha Long,... The cost of living might be slightly different between bigger and smaller cities, but over all, it is affordable for most westerner.
I agree, many nice beach towns in Vietnam. Cảm ơn bạn đã xem video này!
Travis, one thing you did not mention was health care and health insurance. You are young so maybe you don't worry about that, however I'm in my 50s and would definitely need healthcare. Any thoughts or info on that?
As a vietnamese, i have a healthcare insurance costed around 30$ perr year, this insurance cover almost 80% of my healthcare bills in the hospital running by government budget, having many in the metropolis, the last time i got here costed around 10$, or u can get to the private hopital that i do not use insurance and i need to pay more around 50-100$ for my
illness and u would be served as a king in here, not crowded as public hospital.
Just like Coasta Rico u American Expats are gonna fuck it up there.
Worse than the migrant caravans are fucking up the US? Or less?
Great video. Thanks. Siem Reap, Cambodia is similar. I was fortunate enough to live there briefly until the pandemic sent me home. $1,000/month is plenty to live well on, going out regularly for dinner and just to drink, socialize, and explore on the weekends. My large apartment with two balconies was $200/month. My motorbike cost $250 and I Loved it. Best way in the world to get around. Perfect weather all the time. I'd love to try again in Da Nang or similar beach town.
@@GipsyDean More comfortable weather than Wisconsin, USA. 95, dry, and breezy Cambodia feels way better to me than 85, humid as hell, and stagnant. There's also a Lot more shade there. It makes a big difference. And here you get into an oven of a car, that's been sealed up and cooking in the sun. There you hop on a breezy motorbike. All of it makes it wonderful and it generally feels cooler, even though technically the temp here is lower. I sweat so much more here in WI, and think about how miserably hot it is regularly throughout the summer. I didn't frequently think that in Cambodia.
@@GipsyDean ...It's also only 95 for a few months of the year. And 85 in Cambodia is like a beautiful mid70s degree day in most of the US.
Thanks Travis. Great video.
What part of Da Nang would you suggest for the best beach area? I’m very familiar with most of Asia but Vietnam is on my bucket list to get to know and maybe stay a while.
Here is a little something for a beverage of choice. 😊
What a legend! cheers buddy I appreciate it. There is one long stretch of beach in Da Nang. My An beach and My Khe beach. It is all the same beach just different areas. I prefer My An side, it is the southern part of the beach. Just a little bit less crowded but the entire stretch is very nice. You can stay in either Son Tra or An Tuong. Son tra is a little more touristy and nicer hotels, An tuong is more expats and cheaper accomodation. These are the two districts right along the beach. When you decide to come send me a message I can answer any questions.
@@TravisTravelsVN Thanks Travis. I usually do Airbnb so the beach sounds perfect!! I have worked/lived in APAC for a long time and strangely enough I did not cross paths with Vietnam. I will now for sure. Thanks again.
@@TravisTravelsVN did you surf while there? Are the waves fun?
@@sirij8784 Charlie don't surf....
I haven't surfed yet but the waves have been decent. Lot of people out everyday
The Philippines has several places where many expats live for under $1000 / mo. -- NOT 'everywhere' but several areas you can ! -- The visa issue in Vietnam was ignored and an extra expense + the language barrier is also a "pain in the ass" ? The Philippines gives 3 years on their tourist visa before you have to spend $ to leave - then in 24 hours return and renew for 3 more years !!! -- WOW -- Vietnam has expensive - "visa runs" very frequent - and - also a pain in the ass if your an older retired expat ? 🤔 There are other cheap options - Cambodia over 55 for retirement can't be beat 'anywhere' ?!? (if you include yearly costs for visa runs in Vietnam) --- Otherwise good video. 👍🙏🍺
Really good points... Philippines and Cambodia both good options. Visa runs in Vietnam can definitely be annoying.
"It's the cost of living that makes it one of the best places to live" -- The average monthly salary in Da Nang is estimated to be around $750 USD. It's pretty expensive for the locals comparatively.
Great video Trav. ❤
Cheers bro
Yo dude. Border runs every 3 months?
Ya man generally. I travel outside the country a lot for sport competitions so it's not too much of a hassle
Thanks Travis. Your report helps a lot👍👍
It's all relative. I think the average income is 500 a month or so. Anytime you go to a poor area in with western money you can live a comfortable lifestyle. Just don't have any illusions about finding a job earning western salaries. That's not going to happen. I am not even interested in visiting Asia due to the smoking. People smoke everywhere.
don't want to go in Asia because people smoke ? that's the first time i see this reason, you should try Asia it's one of the best place to visit/live
Maybe in china but there’s other countries in Asia
"Anything worth having is worth cheating for"🤣😂🤣
It’s an odd statement to hang on the wall.
Anything worth having is worth taking the time to get it right.
Great info. I plan to retire there in the next couple of years. I hear the surf is pretty good there as well. Also, I’m Vietnamese.
That sounds great. Yes surf pretty decent for about half the year.
Great videos and channel, Travis ... you'll be past 100k subs before you know it ... Just subscribed
We just got back from a Vietnam holiday. It was awesome
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Vietnam, as cheap as it may be, is TROPICAL. If you love a sultry and sweaty climate with intense heat and humidity, this is the place for you to be.
True, don't come if you can't handle the heat
You have more than a few dozen videos, all of which attracted anywhere from a couple of hundred to 22k views. The average amount of views per video is well under 10k, possibly under 5k...despite that, this video was uploaded 5 days ago and you have over 1 million views. I would just like to post this comment to celebrate the joy of receiving such a massive success.
Yep this video blew up. I guess the concept resonates with a lot of people around the world. Thanks very much for your comment
I went to Da Nang 4 years ago while in the Navy before COVID. I was amazed how cheap it was there and how nice it is there. I would love to go back because four days was not enough.
Perfect timing of this video I'd say with the cost of living rising in places like America. People will be looking for options to potentially take the serious leap to move to or semi-move to fight inflation. I'd recommend tapping into WFH job info and full-time online entrepreneurs out there to interview so people can find ways to get out there!
I wasn't even looking for places to visit. This just popped up, but now I'm seriously considering going..
I'm so happy to hear that! Glad you stumbled across the video. I just want to get the wheels spinning a bit 😁
How fascinating that you're an American living in Vietnam. You make me want to try it out.
Thanks for the comment. I just hoped to get the wheels spinning for some folks
@@TravisTravelsVN How difficult is it to find work as an American, there? That would be my biggest concern I'm sure.
Da Nang is a good location. Hội An, the place I liked best when traveling through the country is close, as are the places of interest about the conflict: Khe Sanh, the DMZ, The Rockpile.
The Hai Van Pass is also superlative if you are motorcyclist.
