The burden of being the only son | Pema Gurung | TEDxSaxionUniversity

- Pema was born as a sick child, 5,000m high up in the Himalayas in Nepal, a ten day walk from the nearest airstrip. He slept and begged in the street for days when his parents moved him to a ROPKA children's home in Kathmandu. He left his country, ending up in the Netherlands as a student -"a total Culture shock". Now his parents want him to come back and take care of his family, since he is their only son. But Pema lives in a different story now.
Pema Gurung was born in Nepal but is now living in the Netherlands. He recently finished his Bachelor of Business Administration at Saxion University of Applied Sciences. Pema’s TEDx talk is an incredible personal story and cultural analysis: life between two worlds that could not be more different.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx
I watched the documentary about his life and his sisters and parents. It was so heartbreaking and they had to make difficult decisions. The documentary is more than 1 hour and it's the best one I've watched.

The Dutch mom definitely changed the life of these children. Bravo to her.

@@Teuilafy I agree with you. May the Tibetan parents continue to shine their light! They are a blessing to humanity.
I just watched the documentary of his family also here in UA-cam. I so admire this guy. He is so strong and he knows what he wants. You already know he is different from anyone in his village. I wish him all the best of luck and happiness in life . God bless you always.

The only son... Documentary is one of the most inspiring documentary I have watched... Pema you are an inspiration 👏👏
Two days ago, I watched the documentary about him "The Only Son". I'm so curious what happened to them. This is the best YT recommendations.
He's everything everyone says he is. He is truly an upstanding human. And, he's very likable. Very sweet and down to earth and humble.
I watched the only son documentary, I admire this child, the strength and courage he had to have to break away from his culture and tradition to get a better life for his whole family, not just himself. It would be so good to have a follow up documentary to see how they current doing and what choice each the two younger sister made. Blessings to this family and his dutch family.
Pema is a natural born Leader,He is the example of a blessing out of poverty reason being that he became the results of what he wanted and destined to be so that he tells the tales of his culture, life, sufferings and his parents expectations as the only son.Congratulations Pema and the way you encouraged your sisters to choose education over young marriage arrangements based on your traditions.Well done.
I'm glad he is living his life now. So so happy for you, Pema
He is a precious gem both for the society as well as for the parents. Loved his documentary "The only son".The pressure he goes through as a young man is so tough, I don't want to imagine. Salute you, brother.
Just an hour ago I watched his whole documentary. I myself am from Nepal and can relate to his story. Being the only son in Nepal culture has very high hopes and responsibility. His decision are tough but the decision his younger sister Dolma is about to commit is very heart touching.
What is Dolma about to do?
@@destinationunknown4959 to replace his brother's responsibilities of taking care of their parents when they get old and to take care of the land as well. I dont think Dolma will get married because of this.
Wasn't Dolma Only 15!?!
Is this Pema, right? I admire the courage and dreams of his siblings. I saw Pema before getting worried of forcing him to get married and live in their village. Their village is extremely far. I cannot imagine, this is his present appearance now. So amazing story of him! 🥰❤
Yes it's him
Wow, I have just finished the docu by Simonka de Jung when I was wondering what happened to you. Then auto-recommend this TedTalk. I am so happy you are living your dream now. Give yourself a pat on your back, you deserved every success you have! May you inspire more people around the world!
Same here
we have thots after watching the focumentary just minutes ago and here it is😊
just felt sad for him. we all feel the same way when we cannot give in to our parents desires,,
same*
Im glad I found this after watching the very sad documentary
God Bless Dutch Mother...
The documentary was so heartbreaking but inspiring. Helping one soul means a lot. We cannot save everyone. But save one can make big difference. Thank you, Pema
I’ve just watched the documentary and, as a mother who has children in different parts of the world I can see where your mother is coming from. As an African mother we were taught that your children are your wealth and they will take care of you in your old age. Also a cultural shock to realise that it is not their job to take care of you, and their realisation that they can take care of you, if they want, wherever they are in the world.
I thoroughly enjoyed the documentary and have forwarded it to several people.
I watched the documentary about this young man's life. It was heartbreaking but real. His family is blessed by him in so many ways. He is a special person. He is so brave and courageous. Bless him. Thank you for this amazing video.
I watched his documentary and now this...I'm proud of Him.
I am so glad to see you again. I have watched the documentary The Only Son, after watching i was wondering how you and your siblings would fight to achieve your dream, now i am relieved👏. You are so strong and you know what you wants and how to pursue and achieved. God blessed you, your sister and your Dutch parents.
I'm so glad I came across this. I watched the documentary and wondered what happened to him.
Oh, my heart goes out for him.
Praying for him and family.
Love , South Africa.
Really heart touching!! I appreciate the " Helping hand"for Pema..A big salute to Saxion university and their initiative!!!
The fact that the father carried both him and his injured sister on his back across miles and miles and miles of dangerous and difficult terrain really made me cry. A parent’s love is strong. When I watched the documentary, I could totally relate to it as I’m in a similar situation. Not the marriage part but the part about going back “home” to help the parents. The guilt of not being there. Now I help financially when I can but it’s not enough and I know they are at an age where they need me there physically to help.
I truly hope that he was able to fulfill his words to them in that he’d make their lives easier. I haven’t watched this video yet but I’m hoping for a happy resolution for his parents and that they are alive and well.
Finally I get to see this I was wondering what happened after the documentary. God blessed you Love from northeast Indian
12/5/2021 | just watched the docu "The Only Son" hours ago and now here I am..
Loved the documentary amazing to see the beauty of this country, I really felt for the parents & the children there is no easy solution to a complex situation.
A UA-cam follow up would be great. I sincerely hope that they are all happy and connected.
I wish i have a brother like him..God is good all the time..God bless you Pema..keep up the good work..

I'm so glad for this update on how this young and family is doing...I watch the first documentary and really hoping for some type of recent feedback. Thanks very much and may God continue to bless them all.
Am glad he didn’t go back to their village and get married! He followed his heart desires and thank God for a miracle! He can now help his parents and sisters to at least lessen the hardships that they are facing! But I must say their village is beautiful very beautiful as a matter of fact!
Nice to see u Pema pursuing your dreams ...
I can only say that God has a plan for you .....💜💜💜

I just watched his documentary yesterday. So glad he is doing well!
I have just watched the documentary, then I had to search to find out what happened to you. I came across the foundation Sumchog started and found you had done a ted talk. Seriously we need a follow up documentary. I would love to know how you other siblings and parents are doing. I know the foundation supports the village, built a school and a greenhouse. Your little lives were so challenging as children, but what you are acheiving as adults is absolutely fantastic.
I can hardly imagine the pressure that you beared as the only son. I'm greatful to come across this TEDx video and hear your story. Sending love and blessing from your homeland.
You are blessed. I hope your parents are doing well. You dad seemed like he really cared and understood his kids would be better off.
This guy really inspires me to keep going. Despite of all the hardship, there will come a time that we will all prosper.
Wow! I've just watched his "only son" documentary an hour ago and I'm glad I got this one too! I'm so proud of this young man! God bless you and your family!

I watched the documentary not long ago and it is one you can not miss. It is nice to see this young man was strong enough to move on from farming in Nepal. I am glad all the family is still in contact with each other. I read somewhere that his parents live now in Katmandu.
Thank You Pema, very inspiring you are God's gift!
You are a true inspiration.
Love the speech it's very inspiring. I'm glad you choose and pursue your dreams. In that way you'll help your parents who's uneducated and never learn that there's a new way of living in this world. Congrats to your new book I definitely buy!🙂

What a very good son. I was really happy to see this update from the 1st documentary when the only son went to
visit his family in Nepal village. He left Nepal village and grew up in a good environment with the rest of the unfortunate children. Instead of feeling guilty , he used chosed education. He loves his parents and family. The foster parents were great influence of their lives. They have big hearts. Thanks for sharing.

I hope my Son will realize how fortunate he is.... having a single Mom and Sister supporting him but still nit enough for him.... I know how sad it might be but I am not giving up my only Son.... it’s never too late.
I'm here because of watching the documentary film. What a heartfelt life stories. I hope Puma find his way back to his parents and community, helping them out.
It's good to know Pema that you have followed your dreams.
I loved his documentary and I loved reading Yak Girl. I didn't want the book to end.
We're 8 siblings with only one brother! Since he's the only son we have soo much hope and expectations from him! God bless all the only son
Really, who is doing all the work? The sisters I bet!
Thats a beautiful sentiment Akku! I agree with you. So much responsibility to continue in the footsteps of their ancestors. And perhaps, like Pemba, they feel burdened by it. And best wishes to the parents who maybe witnessing the end of centuries of their "living culture". Who's hearts are breaking at this loss.
Very inspiring man..👍
Kudos to you Pema!!
