I was at this concert at Park West! Great show. I still have the program from the show. The day before I saw the band at Chicagofest at Navy Pier. A friend was (is) the cousin of drummer, Danny Seraphine. She invited me and her boss to the show at Navy Pier. She handed each of us an envelope with a ticket and a backstage pass (which I still have) that said "Chicago Guest". We got to Navy Pier and went backstage. Shortly after, the band showed up in their limos. I got to meet and shake hands with everyone in the band. Robert Lamm actually asked my name and, oddly enough, Peter Cetera shook my hand with his left hand, odd but cool. I was star struck meeting everyone. It was a great show on a perfect night. Thanks Lane for reminding me what a great time I had and rekindling all the awesome memories of those two shows. Peace.
Thanks for sharing this. This is legit Peter's prime. Listen to these bass lines, holy moly. The Chicago 16 era seemed to retain the rock spirit that the old Chicago had while embracing a new sound simultaneously. I find the subsequent albums, although very good, to be more of stark departure from rockin Chicago of the 70s.
I just start listening to this and Peter is killing it on Beginnings!!!! I mean Pete was always a great bass player, but this is so sharp and inventive. And Danny is putting a bit of extra fire into this version, as well!! This SMOKES!!!
Anyone in that band that thinks they’re playing better now than at this point in time is either deaf or delusional. Peter’s singing, and playing was off the charts at this point and the other guys sound fantastic as well.
Wow Lee Loughnane on trumpet is on his fucking game! as always. His solos kicked ass. Also, in tune. Imagine with the loudness. This is before ear pieces for live concerts.
I agree with your thoughts on Chris. I wish there were more recordings of him playing some deeper tracks from the catalogue. His playing of each song is unique but also respects the original.
@@tonyde52 If I were to hazard a guess... Cetera became their focal point with 16/17 and the early MTV era. Once he left, the band likely felt they needed some younger/hipper faces to help keep the momentum going. Jason fit the bill, and so did Dawayne Bailey - who brought a lot of 80s guitar flash as well. Chris was also tight with Peter, so that might have been a contributing factor too. But that's all speculation on my part.
I hope someone is able to post the full concert at some point. I remember listening to this live with my dad at our home in Burbank, Illinois when I was 12 years old. I remember all of it like it was yesterday. I"m missing some of the songs they did that night like Scrapbook and Cetera playing the intro to Louie Louie before they did Just You And Me
Saw them in the 80's and I absolutely loved the show, with the exception of Color My World. Robert Lamb has been the only one to ever do it justice live since the passing of Terry Kath.
Thanks for the share. I saw them twice on the 16 tour. Once at the Circle star Theatre in San Carlos a small venue. And then at the concord pavilion as the album must’ve taken off. I loves Chicago 16. The band sounds great here; and yeah the tempos are fast as heck.
Met them? Same thing w me. Cetera walked up and says "nice coat" Ha. Didn't realize he had on a yellow version of my red Ralph Lauren windbreaker. They were all like Id known them for 15 yrs. In a sense I did and they knew it.
I love how Bobby actually say’s before “If You Leave Me Now” - “the song song that kept us on the road for a couple of years.” They were still grateful for ballads that fed their families back then. Now it’s Peter’s songs turned us into soft rockers. Jealous bastards.
@@deangood6682Kath wasn't relevant after 1974. Love the guy, but just stating the facts. He didn't write or sing lead on any of their hits after Wishing You Were Here. Peter became more influential than any of them by then.
@@deangood6682 BS. I seriously wish that people would stop IMMORTALIZING Terry Kath already. His writing was on a serious decline after the first 3 albums. Most of what he wrote was very depressing and dark. Even his vocals were starting to falter. Chicago rose above it all after his death; and they proved that they had the strength to survive and grow musically.
@@lamarravery4094 Anything Terry wrote=after that was really rather pathetic. No HITS at all. He burned out very fast! His excessive use of alcohol and drugs led him to his eventual fatal gun accident. The band should have stepped in and tried to offer him mental help get him into rehab. Terry was a mess by 1978.
Peter slaying it as always! The horns and Danny are killing it as well! NO ONE should be able to play 25 or 6 to 4, as the only guitar player worthy is the one and only Terry Kath. It's also very difficult to take Bill Champlin seriously here, his vocals are so soulless by comparison to Terry.
Pinnick was in the band before Foster came along. He played on Chi XIV. Danny approached Champlin to help him write "Sonny Think Twice" before Foster agreed to produce. He asked Champlin what he thought of Foster as a producer.

I have an original vinyl record copy of this from a radio station. One of the best recorded chicago concerts out there

I Agree 👍. The band seemed to really play tighter during this time.
His singing was better here than anyone who has ever sung at any time in the band.

I only love Bill Champlin singing "Color My Word" ..loving You babe❤
Thanks for posting this. The whole "Ballet" is smoking. Chris Pinnick's solo on "To Be Free" in the Ballet is incredible. Great player.
I think there's a bit of sweep picking at 36:44? Things you never expected to hear in a Chicago tune 😄

Chris P is a MAN! 25 or 6 to 4 wowzer
I cannnot for the life of me understand WHY they didn't KEEP Chris Pinnick !
@@tonyde52 maybe because Chris can't sing prior to Bill coming in

I still like the way Terry had sung "Colour My World" best. I grew up listening to that version of the song.

I'm TOTALLY bummed that I missed it😅
