  • This great opportunity came in August 18, 2023, when Don Garlits gave us a tour of his facility. At 91 years old he held up great during the two-hour tour, through the Florida heat. This tour started in the air-conditioned museum, but it was mostly of the backstage areas, the shop and the storage buildings.
    Big Daddy keeps everything!
This video is the compilation of our series Big Daddy Don Garlits stories, a 5-video series that we have been posting for over a month now.
This is the greatest Drag racing legend telling his own story. If you are a drag racing fan, you need to see this.
Thanks for watching. Please subscribe to Viva la Maquina!

Big Daddy, you have been my favorite racer and hero since the slingshot dragsters smoking thr tires the length of the track. Without you, I don't believe drag racing would be where it is now. Watched you and Shirley race many times. Praying for continued good health and Happy Belated Birthday Ɓig Daddy Don Garlets!!

Any time spent with Don Garlits is priceless!! He is a true innovator and an american racing legend!!! We need to have a movie ( or several) made about his colorful life!!!

Yes. Prudhomme and Shirley Muldowney got their movies done. There was a movie that was going to be done, and then it was not, according to his own words. I believe is a missed opportunity.

Awesome video interview with Big Daddy Don, He was my inspiration for drag racing in my younger days. I raced a 1969 Z/28 302 W/cross ram manifold. Weekend drag racing payed my car payments, The old Z was also my daily driver. I sure do miss the old girl. Thanks for the great interview, at 91 he is still sharp as a whistle!

VERY kewl ! I'm sure that car REALLY SCREAMED ! I also had an original matching numbers 69 Z28 Camaro with a single 4 barrel and I had a guy that was my friends Dad named Del Blades was one of the fastest super stock racers in the country did a couple minor modifications on mine and I made SOOOO much money it was ridiculous !

I saw him race in a little strip in Wall Texas, it must have been in '68 or 9. He had a car with fuel injection stacks, not blown. I was a very young photographer back then and was in the "pits" behind the little "Rail." The car was running straight pipes and I saw the mechanic squirt something in the injectors and the engine sputters and cranked. The unturned fluid sprayed me in the eyes. Oh man it burned. I ran to the concession stand and got two big cups of ice and turned both of them up against my eyes hoping the ice would extinguish the burning. It did and I learned a lesson that day. The crew never saw nor knew what happened. I also got covered with bits of melting and sheared tire rubber from photographing the burn-outs. What a day! What a day! Living history!

If that incident happened today, Garlits could have been sued! But, because back in the day "If you aren't smart, you have to be tuff" was the rule, it ended up a great day! Was that the San Angelo Dragway? Thanks for watching.
