Grey Knights and Tyranids are both really satisfying armies to play on tabletop playstyle wise imo. they really flex into every single phase of the game. Super rewarding to set up buffs to units and execute a plan.
I also enjoy doing everything well without weakness.
I agree, having plenty to do in each phase really helps me remember to do all the things I'm supposed to as well, gone are the days where I'm so focussed on a good swarmlord slingshot that I completely forget something my shooting phase
Exactly why I play grey knights! I love their play style in every phase.
@@coltonlong7562 this made me laugh haha
@@Whoknows21356 I mean it's true. And I'm only slightly bitter.
A reminder for beginners and people delving into competitive, it's better to triple up on solid units with a theme (speed, ranged attack, melee attack, heavy troops, mass troops etc) than using 'standout units' that are only useful in the hands of an experienced player. Bring three units of bikes, three units of speeders, three transports with infantry etc.
The reason the 'blast' rule exists is because horde armies are hard to deal with for the average meta list and people still tend to forget to bring blast weapons, meaning horde infantry works.
You can pick any faction and do well, the game is as balanced as its ever been and unless you can maximize a faction, there is no best pick. You won't be winning all games because you pick Dark Angels now and in fact you're best off picking middling armies to avoid random nerfs and heavy changes that mass invalidate your unit choices.
KISS - Keep It Simple S(ugar), you'll have an easier time playing the army and that means you'll have simpler choices to make and do better. The other advice is to intend not to win, but to go make friends.
One perk of thousand sons right there - we don’t have a lot of units to pick from so understanding the raw stat line becomes very easy. Downside, you need to learn the psychic phase well because that’s where things will push you over the top.
I know space marines sell and that’s why they get so much love, and they’re the poster boys so most players start there first, but I feel like them having so many choices can be a disadvantage as well when you’re trying to keep tabs on stats of who does what.
The best way to pick up an army is pick the models you think look best or have a cool playstyle you really like. Picking based on power level (even if its the middle tier armies) is a mistake as that can change at any moment with buffs and nerfs.
@@ralphiemay8933 Not in competitive. It's a great way of getting started in general, but not if you actually want to have a cohesive experience at the table that you can learn and develop from.
Blast? Laugh on necrons
This is great advice thank you!
I love playing Death Guard but man do I hate how GW keeps nerfing their durability and defeating the purpose of their playstyle
Very sad that they dunked on DG 5+ FNP but Ironhands kept theirs?
Durability is for DA terminators (apparently)
I think they should get pts decreases and should increase 3" virion auras to 6" this includes surgeon heal + FNP and also blightspawn fight last.
@@TheKlawwGang888 They should
They can remove DG and Tau. No one likes them.😂 Sry guys i hat thoose both that much.
Thank you Auspex, always a pleasure when you re-do your old videos! Some of the older vids has become inaccurate, so I'm glad you made this update!
This is an impressively comprehensive look at the armies of 40k. Thanks for the update
My armies were more chosen for lore than tabletop play. Love my necrons and sisters. Currently waiting for the Emperor's Children update
I do believe Fulgrim will be the next after The Lion (If Rumors and Saint Valrak are correct)... Fulgrim deserves some love, not only a model but in the lore too!
Got to respect the faction loyalty. I play chaos in general. Mostly death guard but world eaters are my favourite but yet to buy the new models as I'm working through my pile of shame. Got ton of thousand sons and daemons that need building and painting. Absolutely love tyranids also but got to stay strong and not start another army 😂
Noise marines please
100 percent a lot of armies are really cool it’s just a matter of what you want to spend money on. For me blood angels, death guard, and tau are my highest tier while leagues of votann, demons, and custodes are kinda middle tier in priority of wanting to buy an army. There are so many more I’d get into like black Templar for melee and close firepower I love but lore wise I’m kinda a heretic 😂. I’m not into armies as holy like sisters of battle and black Templar but play style wise they seem to be perfect for me just not in lore as much.
1 year later, still no dedicated EC
I think an underrated aspect of White scars is that not only can you advance and charge, but you can Fall Back and charge, meaning full uptime on outriders' devastating charge or on space marine shock assault, functionally rewarding a bit of mobility with +1 attacks across the board.
Necrons have such a fun playstyle in both competitive and casual play
how did there playstyle shifted? I wasnt realy a huge fan of the "dont fight just score" playstyle they got before
@@admiralfujitora4376 You still do that, but you score less now.
Apparently some success can be found with the Destroyer AoR.
@@Shippo89 Where are you hearing that Cult of Annihilation is doing well? Everything I've seen says it's utter garbage.
@@russman738 "Some success" not "doing well".
There were a couple tops right at the start of AoO, but it's a one-trick pony.
Unfortunate as it actually has a decent WL Trait and relics.
How to play Imperial Fist
Step 1:Strap on pain glove to max setting
Step 2:Cry inside your fortifications
Step 3:Swap to Horus Heresy and rehydrated from crying.
How to play Imperial Fist.
Step 1: pick Bolter Fusiliade custom Chapter tactic.
Step 2: play as Iron Hand Successor because they do firepower stick much better than Imperial Fist.
Step 4: Profit?
I still like my Fists in 40K. It's been a journey of figuring out what works best with them, for sure, but I'm looking forwards to dropping three squads of Inceptors and Terminators turn 2 and just deleting things off the board with bolt weapons.
One of the best Things about the Carnifex is how modular It is, I Buffed mine so far, that two Carnifexes are 400 Points now.
How?
@@jasonmolenaar119 just a bunch of Upgrades, I gave both one pair of Cruching Claws, the Tail Sythe Bio Plasma, Spore cysts. I don't remember the last Upgrade but then also both have different Adaptive physiologies
and then they go down to a single hammer head shot...
@@endikacampoacha615 only if You don't Deal with the Hammerhead apropriate.
Carnifex used to be only 60 points once, sigh the old days.
Im so glad to see this kind of video redone often enough to keep up with buffs/nerfs and dataslates, you never know when watching old videos if theyre even relevant or not. Im getting a buddy into 40k so ill be sending this video along for sure!
Totally. I started getting back into it recently and there is so much interesting pre-AoO content around. Just not sure how useful it is now, especially as 10th seems imminent.
Love that the "Most replayed" section is for Tau because honey we don't know what the fuck we doin.
36:53 I can't help but feel that putting the Tzangors as the featured unit while saying "the thousand sons aren't doing so well" was intentional. And funny.
I had a vortex beast, tzaangor enlightened and a shamen. Lost a hell of a lot.. soon as I swapped them all out for rubrics, more scarabs and a maulerfiend I won and pretty convincingly 😂
Tzaangors has no business being in the TSons list. Daemons maybe, but not TSons, and I genuinely believe whoever decided that should be fired
There actually is a very powerful Alpha legion melee build at the moment. 2 Warp Talons, advanced halfway up table before game and pulled back if you don't get first turn, however if you do get first turn, you jump right on opposition and lock them in deployment zone while terminators or possessed charge the middle, moving fast up table with use of sorcerer with warptime. Because Warp Talons have fly, they can jump over heads of everyone and lock in vulnerable firepower in back line, often locking 2-3 other units in close combat.
Nice
My favorite army is absolutely my Thousand Sons. I love the psychic phase and shooting phase. The “bag of tricks” faction feels pretty fun, though I need my book open to cabalistic rituals while doing psychic phase to show that no, i promise, im not cheating.
Im really tempted by a Xenos shooting army right now and feel a little dirty about it.
I have a Templars force that sits in the cabinet looking pretty because it’s my first army ever and looks nice but I really don’t enjoy the melee centric aspect that much. Maybe I’ll try them again and see if I can spark joy. I do like their 5+ invuln and the FNP to mortals.
I have made little cards for the most important cabal tricks, strats, psychic powers etc, it really helps
@@Ahriman_362 I generally don’t have trouble remembering the most important bits. My reasoning for the book is so I can quickly show what I’m doing to someone who is not as familiar and wants to know why the sorcerer in the back just cast a doombolt from around the terrain feature and hit something thought to be out of his range (cabal points to measure LoS and distance from another psyker)
Literally perfect timing for me. THANK YOU 🙏
Fantastic video! Thanks Auspex!
That sir was impressive as hell. Well done!
Excellent video. Concise and interesting. Didn't feel like an hour + long video at all. Subscribed!
You did a great job! You are a point of reference for those who don't have enough players nearby to confront each other. Thanks for what you do!
just thought id say I liked the format of this video. Absolutey no intro at the beginning just straight into it. also not starting with space marines was a good call. I think putting space marines at the end of the "imperium" section is a good idea as I feel some people would just leave the video after the space marine section. well done King
I’m just impressed at how many videos you post. Also appreciate it!
I’m always excited for a new auspex video even if it’s every day
Oh nice this is perfect timing, I just watched your last most recent one of these videos and was hoping for an updated one soon. I'm trying to decide between Tyranids or Orks... I've painted way, waaaay too much Sisters power armour and need a change lol.
Games Workshop: "How many different Space Marine armies do we want?"
Games Workshop: "Yes."
thanks for an updated version!
Imperial Fists Playstyle step-by step:
1. cry
2.
I mean, it's a distraction for the opponent atleast....
Wild take: IF are currently not as bad as people like to think they are. IF are simply worse than most marines but they are not terrible (anymore)
@@Tulkash01 IF also probably have lower win rates because people know that they pretty much just do what IH do except worse and players looking to win are less likely to bring them to competitive events.
@@Tulkash01 They are still fairly terrible because none of their traits give them any power boosts that are worthwhile. Exploding 6s on bolters is pure garbage, ignoring light cover only just incentivises your opponent into charging into your gunline. And our Super Doctrine is so niche and constricted that you really have to build for it to get any major use out of it, before you hurry to get into Assault Phase so you have a chance in melee.
As an Iron Warrior player that had far worse rules for YEARS longer, deal with it lmao
Great help video. Been thinking about getting into the hobby because I have fallen in love with the lore and the black library novels.
This is really cool! I've always wondered about this, as someone outside the game
Great overview!!
Thank you! Very nice video. I hope you'll do it at the beginning of the 10th too
Really enjoyed the video. Thank you
Thanks so much, I don't comment much, but just wanted to say I appreciate all your work, keep it up!
Thanks for the content as always, got a bit more paint on an Custodes Ares gunship proxy I found on CuIts 3D while listening to it. :)
Thank you for another great video!
Really interesting video as a newcomer to the tabletop, thanks!!
Not sure if this is the place to ask but I’d love to see a review or tierlist of the orks forgeworld models I’ve had a look and I can’t seem to find a video of you talking about them?
I'm really hoping the World Eaters stay this straightforward in 10th ed., they're currently the army that interests me the most because I'm a big fan of "run up and hit them" playstyles xD
are they better at melee than space wolves or equal?
@@VIC-ds8pd Can't say, I've never actually played Warhammer, I just collect the models for painting. I'm planning to start playing in 10th though, which is why I'm researching armies.
@@DragonaxFilms ive been reading the lore but havent played the game yet. i think my first army would be salamanders
This man has an amazing pilot voice.
Necrons: Ask your opponent nicely to not step foot near any objectives.
the video doesn't say enough about how each faction plays.
Me getting this video recommend after watching lutin lore vids and never having touched a table top game like this before, must be a sign from the emperor himself
As someone who has been looking to return to the game since around December I truly appreciate these videos. I'm curious though-how much do you expect the imminent new edition to turn all this on its head? Would GSCs play the same if their rules were taken away and they became datasheet dependent, for example? Probably should just wait until 10th...
I have played GSC in 7th 8th and 9th. In all of them the power of the units fluxuates a bit, but they have still been what I would call a "Finesse" army. Very hard to learn, but very rewarding once you do figure them out. If you like plotting and planning, and complicated battle plans and ambushes, they are a good army to pick. I play multiple armies, so I am no where near mastering them, but at high level play the win rate speaks for itself.
The downside of that is they tend to get nerfed when it isn't really warranted. Just because a top player can win 57% of their games with GSC doesn't mean most players can. They have a bit of a learning cliff rather than a curve.
Thank you very much for that video. you are a blessing
Great vid 👌
I run chaos space marines black legion but I don't use Abaddon, haarken worldclaimer is a fairly decent warlord and HQ he can't heal or revive models but his aura and ability to reroll hit and wound rolls of any kind is definitely op pair it with a few legionares a splash of daemons of khorne and you have an unstoppable force
This video could be massively useful for beginners, but unfortunatly it doesn't actually explain much. Someone new to the hobby wouldn't understand what you mean by "Bionics + Radiation tactics" and those who do understand it won't need this guide. I can see why though: at over an hour it's a chunky video. Still, it might've been better to split this into multiple videos.
The reanimation protocols explanation at 1:13:48 is kinda good though. It doesn't go indepth into the rules, but explains the underlying concept. Contrast that with the Crossfire explanation at 1:02:48 - the actual stats won't matter to a newbie, but the combo of how crossfire triggers (ranged flanking) or how it synergizes with the other rules naturally isn't explained. Similar situation with the markerlights at 1:05:22 if you want more examples.
Still, good work on the most part and if it's someone who has played a few rounds with borrowed models and knows the basic rules this might work out fine still.
I like the structuring (Overall, Army Gimmicks, Example Units) and how you've also written a role for each example unit (but not the mention of specific relics, weapons or rules for the unit; that's too specific and will change next update anyway).
Love the video. But thought you should know if you do not already, the thumbnails next to each time stamp in the description are off by one.
Nice video. This should help new players quite a bit. Also, I think enough time has passed to know where Thousand Sons stand in Arks. I hope they get buffed.
With the new box with Azrael, they'd hugely miss out on a range refresh of the very antiquated company vets and bikes for DA.
I like melee focus with psychic supports. That seems fun, problem is I like the sisters, tyranids and death guard
Can't wait for the next iteration of this type of video when 10E arrives 😁
Make Death Guard durable again!
Scions are my favourite army
Simple in concept but very hard to play right.
Loving the content Auspex just don't burn yourself out! You're pumping out videos at an alarming rate 😅
For Imperial Fists, there's a big unit that was missed. Inceptors, with Bolter Drill, put out 36 shots with double-exploding 6's in Tactical Doctrine. I've scared an Ultramarines player with the sheer number of saves Guilliman had to make (he did survive, unfortunately), and anything without an invul is in for a bad day. I'm talking routinely bracket/kill tanks with bolt weapons. While a fast attack choice doesn't really fit "siege", just getting to shock Ork/Guard players by rolling more dice than them with six guys is always worth it.
Great thanks !!!
damn, what an introduction... speed efficiency, and strzight to the point.
ALWAYS the best tactical overviews that is available on this platform. thank you for doing such good work.
My Necron playstyle: here's a list of all the shinanigins I have to choose from, I'll be using all of them.
Warning: not everything is competitive, but all of it is silly or enraging - depends on your viewpoint.
My playstyle as Tau can be boiled down to three words: BLAST. EVERYTHING. OFF.
i like how tau empire is the section thats most replayed
I thought you called the templars the crusading playful swordsmen.
I had to go back and listen again.
My weed is very strong.
I wonder what can be done to improve some of the space marine chapters that are in the 30s or low 40s.
What the Grey Knight Librarian Combo that dishes up 10 Mortal wounds?
If there was a way to ensure that White Scars got their +1 to damage in CC the entire game, they would shoot up to the danger level of Salamanders.
I've been having fun with them in AoO. True, mostly rotated to them because Deathwatch aren't really playable atm, but they are my 30k legion and I have enough of them to play. They are still pretty scary rn. Have had great success with using impulsors and buffed bladeguard (apothecary, Khan, ancient) to delete things off the board and then hold the position. A gladiator and some outriders (admittedly stolen from my deathwatch) help with chaff as well. Have some meltas to outflank as needed and a scout unit to foward deploy.
As someone who started DA at the tail end of 3rd, hearing them so described makes me thin it's April Fools 😃
Maybe I should finish repainting my Deathwing for the 4th time.
hell yeah I get to learn how to play my army
Love these videos! Really fast way of getting new players interested in the game and figuring out what they want to play (the only correct decision of course is Eldar lol 😂)
Got my wife into playing 40k with me. I frankensteined myself an army of Carnifexes and she has an unknown Space Marine chapter. They're all different colors so... yeah, I dunno. LoL but, we're having fun. Now she wants to try the Sisters of Battle and assemble legit armies. But, it's just SO expensive. x_x
What’s the stratagem that would let the zephyrm fire twice?
Tha KS you for putting in timestamps on the scrollbar. So I coukd skipped all of the space marines. Xenos for life.
Torn between Admech, Guard, or marines of some kind (BA or DA).
would genestealers or knights be less expensive to try building into? those are what im feeling more than anything else anymore to try and start the game. or the imperial guard group thats like just british expeditionaries with laslocks. Praetorian guard i think?
Im new to the whole warhammer franchise. Im wondering, can you play chaos deamons with chaos space marines?
They say white scars are bike focused but really there is little incentive to take them I think. Dark angels seem to make better use of bikes honestly.
They are still one of the better factions for outriders and bikes. More sucks that they don't have the buffs to bikes or bike characters that DA's have. Would be awesome to have a stormseer on bike, bike ancient, or bike apothecary, but those options were removed in 9th as they don't have actual models for them. If white scars had a "black knights" equivalent (that is, elite melee bikes for ws) they'd be stupendous.
Need this for 10th ed! Great vid
Hello I am new and have a question if anybody could answer. I want to build a daemon army, I have purchased some models but upon arrival and inspection I realised that they may not work together.
I have brought
1x great unclean one
1x daemon prince
1x pox bringer
1x infernal enrapturess
1x blood master
1x bloodletter unit
And the bit that throws me off
I was gifted a death guard combat patrol, can I use this in the same list? If so, what disadvantages or advantages does it pose for me.
Thanks
I love imperial knights they can finally wipe army just like in lore (may be a bit tough tho)
I actually rather like where Craftworlds are right now, my only complaint is the age of my models lol
Comment for the SKull Throne
For necrons, is the silent king and crpyteks the only good hqs? Are overlords worth the points?
People tend to run the Command Barges over overlords for the most part. Anrakhyr sees some decent use, and the lokhust lord seems to be run in a few comp lists that run destroyers. Silent King, Technomancer and Chronomancer tend to be the most common picks for leaders though
@@auspextactics thank you
Thanks for sharing this with us. One day I’ll finally manage to field my death guard on the table. 😊
What edition is this?
Can you remake this for 10th edition after all the codex’s drop?
Yes
You forgot to mention the Motherfucker himself Castellan of the Grey Knights, with his demon possessed sword. He personally deserves to be a honorable mention as a key unit.
I wonder how they'll change when it comes to 10th?
Looking to get into Warhammer and I'm happy I found this video!
FOR THE LION!!!!!
As a 40k noob, starting with orks is the best way to learn mechanics without actually having to care about them 😂 it's not as bad in 10th edition as 9th, but you can definitely let the RNG take the wheel if you're unsure what to do 😅 it works all the time 50% of the time 😂
I know this comment will probably be ignored or overlooked but does anyone have any suggestions on how I could incorporate units from the Vampire Counts into the warhammer 40k table top enviroment?
I'm confused by the strength rankings why is middling centered on 48% shouldn't it be at 50%?
50% is considered perfectly balanced. Below is middling to poor, above is “strong to very strong”
Ties.
46% is the perfect winrate for my faction to be sitting at. May or may not get buffed but unlikely to be nerfed either. Just leave us alone.
At the bottom edge of the target, I think CSM could use a little bump. Their objectives are frankly terrible and because of the points costs, the two good legions are the only solid option.
Am I losing my mind, Dire Avengers AP-2?
Who is winnig if everyone has 50%< wr?
I just find it a bit funny that Votann, the faction I do have and run, I use none of those key units outside an occaisional Kahl, which makes them actually rather weak due to that miserably short range
If Custodes had some kind of psychic I would not even debate any other army
They can bring an agent of the imperium inquisitor (generic or named). I’ve done that with Templars. It checks out
Is this for 9th edition ?
Just fyi war dog chain cannon is assault 12, not heavy.
What about other chapters such as the Blood Ravens?
whos that?
