Growing Giant Castor Oil Plants From Seed

- In this video I grow two varieties of castor oil plant (Ricinus communis) from seed. One variety is Impala which I grew last year, this variety has bronze to purple leaves and has bright red seed capsules. The other variety is a giant called Zanzibarensis which grows much bigger and has blue tinged leaves which reach over two foot wide.
In this video I introduce the two varieties and sow the seeds, I then follow up with an update a few weeks later once they have germinated and I finish the video with another update after they have been growing outside for a few weeks.
The next update can be found here: • Giant Castor Oil Plant...

I live in Quebec canada and grew 2 and they are huge and still producing flowers and it Is quite chill here right now. Beautiful plant.😍😊
For a tropical plant it's surprising how well they do in cooler climates, mine were still looking good into October last year and even survived the first light frosts of autumn.
this plant is very interesting, here in brazil it grows very fast, it even surrounds the whole territory, and it also produces big bunches, congratulations for the video! really good!
Thanks, they must grow huge in your sub tropical climate, are they all green or do you have different types growing in your area?
@@Gardeningat58N Here in Brazil, a lot of castor beans grow, especially in vacant lots, land without houses, most are green with slightly purple and red tones, most have purple leaves, and every now and then we see completely red castor beans!
Not something I'd consider growing with my allergies (not to mention pets) but absolutely stunning foliage - thanks for showing them!
They are very striking plants, in your climate they could be a problem as I know in warmer countries they can self seed freely and become a large very fast growing weed.
On of my every year plants that grow fast down in Ayrshire in my tropical garden
I was very impressed with their growth last summer and they seem to be doing well so far this year so I think I will try a few more varieties next year if I have the space.
Hi there, do you add any fertiliser at all?. Great video thanks 💚
Thanks, Yes, the compost I used had feed added so for the first few weeks in the pot I didn't feed them, but then I started to feed them with a feed which is high in nitrogen and I've continued with the feeding now that they are in the soil. I use a high nitrogen feed as it encourages large leaves and rapid growth.
@@Gardeningat58N excellent thank you 💚💚💚
Seeds of the castor oil plant also contain ricin, which is considered to be one of the deadliest toxins known to man
How tall did they end up getting?
Most are around 5ft but one is well over 2m probably 2 and a half meters tall. I'll try to film an update this autumn if they survive the storms.
Hi,
Might I ask where you get your seed?
Thanks
I can send you some. Have a couple giants that ate fruiting, flowering and seeding. Topics in Australia
@@syncronet Ah bit if a trck to Scotland...lol
I found this gorgeous plant in my garden and came here via google lens. Tropics in Australia.
@@SynKronos I'll post some as soon as I know which ones are seeds. Maybe it's those spurs. I'll put photos I took yesterday
