  • In this video I have a look at how my Paulownia trees have grown over their first summer and how the growth varies between the plants. I also have a look at the root system and explain the Lignotuber that these plants have as part of their root system.

    I have one. It’s about 50 feet high and it is so beautiful and strong and spiritual. I just love my tree.

      They are such magnificent trees, one day I hope to have a garden that's big enough to let one grow to full size.

    I bought three P. Tomentosa plug plants in March 2021 and potted them up in April and May, and then put two in the ground and kept one in a 12" deep pot. At the end of their second summer, the potted on is a metre high with 20cm wide leaves. The planted ones reached two metres in year one. I cut them back to 20cm in their second spring, and they reached 7 metres with 40cm wide leaves by the end of the summer. Trunks are 10cm wide. Chicken pellets in the base when planted then loads of water, seaweed fertiliser every week and chicken pellets every 6 week during summer. I'll be pollarding again this spring. Great one plant. 52°N.

      Its incredible how fast they grow, mine grew 30cm in its first summer, then 3m in its second. I've now cut it back down to 30cm and hopefully it can also reach 7 meters after being coppiced. Its amazing the difference in growth when they are not contained by a pot and fed well.

    I have one in my Garden, grown from seed, its about 2 years old, and its 20 feet tall

      I'm hoping the one I have in the ground will shoot up next year, although I don't think it will achieve 20 feet in the cool cloudy Scottish summer. How big did yours grow in its first year?

      I have one growing now. Approaching its first winter. Will the leaves fall and grow back in spring? Do you cut these down at all?

    I did some research and they have been used medicinally. There also appears to be a love/hate relationship with them. There are some extreme emotions about the inability to kill one of the varieties off. But, the hybrids are loved by many and don't have the issues of the original variety, it appears from an internet search.

      I've not heard of it being used medically, I'll have to read up on that. Yes they are often hated because some of them can be invasive in the right climate. The species called tomentosa is the invasive one that can cause big issues, especially in parts of the US where it loves the hot humid summers. Here in Scotland even the invasive species isn't invasive as our summers are too cool for it to grow well.

    are Paulownias easy to grow from cuttings?

  • @raphlvlogs271
    @raphlvlogs271 4 місяці тому +1

    can you grow them indoors when there young? since the massive leaves can help them survive in shady conditions

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  4 місяці тому

      Yes you can, I kept mine indoors until midsummer as my climate is a bit cold and windy for them. Although they have big leaves they don't do well with shade, so you'll need to make sure they are somewhere sunny like a windowsill.

    Hello sir I watched most of your video and I liked them. Can you please tell me where to buy the Paulownia seeds from? I am from India. I couldn't find any here.

    can we get a 2022 update. I have 3 growing in my backyard. They came back this spring and I cut them down to the ground for a straight trunk.

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  2 роки тому

      Yes, I hope to make one in a few weeks, they only came back into growth a few weeks ago so I'm waiting for them to grow a little more so I can compare their growth. interestingly they all have different leaf types and have suffered varying degrees of frost damage.

      @@Gardeningat58N I grew 50 pao tong z07 from seed. I have five 5 gallon bucket with trees in them and they did get hit with a little frost damage, but now are flourishing. I'm happy to say, the ones I cut to the ground are growing straight trunks and are14 inches tall and growing.

    Mine is 20 feet tall now and it is 18 feet from my house in backyard. Do you think it is too near? Will I have root issues in the future?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  2 роки тому +1

      That should be ok, it depends on the species of Paulownia, your climate and how large you allow it to grow. At it's current size and distance from your house I wouldn't expect it to cause any issues. If you prune it to stop it getting too big it will stop it's roots from spreading too far, but just watch out for suckers because some species send up lots of suckers from the roots when pruned too hard.

      I just had to have our 40’ tree cut down as it had sent roots under the foundations of our house and started to shift the walls of our bedroom! I planted it myself 26 years ago and I loved it but the house is more valuable. It was planted 25’ from our house. I think at 18’ you will have problems.

    I've tried twice to germinate from seed, no luck at all. I think the temp was just too low.

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  2 роки тому

      Temperature is important but also light. These seeds are very small and need light to germinate so they should be placed on the surface and not buried under the soil. This can be tricky as they also cannot dry out, so sealing the top of the pot with cling film is important.

    My young paulownia has climbing runners growing is it a different variety?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  2 роки тому

      I've never heard of a paulownia having climbing runners. The plant either doesn't have enough light, or if it has good light levels then it could be a new variety.

      Did you damage the base of the stem or dig up roots, cutting them? That can cause sprouting of trees from the parent tree.

  • @samueljaramillo4221

    Beautiful tree but unfortunately they have surface roots. Not good to have in lawns or near any kind of walls or foundations.

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  2 роки тому

      Yes, I am growing mine in a large garden bed and I'll cut it back every year to stop it from getting too large. Like many trees the planting location should be carefully considered.
