Nursery Shopping for Bonsai Material

- Think bonsai have to come from trees collected from the mountains or from an expensive bonsai nursery? You may be surprised to find that some of your local nurseries can be good sources for character filled woody plants that make great bonsai. Come with me on a trip to one of my favorite nurseries and lets see what treasures we can find!

Love the bald cypress! I have thirty or so I’m going to plant a forest of, and two larger. Have you posted any videos of your work with the bald cypress?
Haven’t styled it yet. I did an initial trimming and it is currently gaining strength after not doing so great at the nursery. I’ll get to it eventually.
For a second there I thought you were going to make the big cut higher on the trunk to create an upright. There was another foot or so of useful trunk taper. But hey, bonsai is all about creating something unique. Good luck with this tree.

With the red varieties of JM you want to give more leeway than the green varieties. Reduce trunk by half and the letting it back bud and build strength is generally better. Anyway I look forward to seeing it develop.
That red maple is exploding with back buds! Huge new leaves, but I’m ok with that since I want to see big ol’ solar panels right now anyway.
Oh... and the olive?... yah, I went back and rescued that one a couple of weeks ago. I’m planning a winter protection strategy for it now.
@@BonsaiEcho that's great news. I am glad someone else didn't scoop it up before you could get to it. Those red JM look stunnin when they're in full display. I guess they have the tendancy to burn so most folks feel that they are hard. We keep ours under reed screens so they get dappled light and they grow like weeds.

Hey Bro, the olives are the easiest to grow. They are very strong, you can actually repot it now and it’s not gonna die. Easy to style and it can take heat and cold. I have 4 of them, I just couldn’t find a really nice one yet.😀😀
Yah... I’m going to buy that one at that one nursery if it’s still there next time I stop in. I’ve been recommending it to a bunch of people lately, so chances are getting lower that it will be.
Olive tree is one of my favorite. On my video of my visit to a nursery (the first one) at the end there’s a beautiful Olive there that I suppose to buy, but that day I can’t, that’s a really nice one, only a little pricey than I normally pay for, it’s been a month, I hope it’s still there when I go back. Olive are great Bonsai.
Mind-Blowing options. No tree nursery here would ever have trees like those lying around, it would be out of business if the trees on sale were so poorly 'kept' - trees here are uniformly grown for landscaping, so straight, vertical trunks, no lower branches, etc. So to get that naturalistic trees like those you are showing, the trees would have to be grown from seedlings specifically for bonsai by the bonsai-grower themselves. Adds 10-15 yrs to the process.
That nursery is run by a person who doesn’t really need it to be high volume. It’s really a hidden gem. I’m going to have to go back before he decides to move on.
You should have airlayed the tree
I do have air layers on other large bonsai that have more interest in the upper portions, but this one’s top didn’t have the value I would look for in an air layered plant. I have a limited amount of space for propagation, so I currently only pick the ones I can’t get otherwise. Locally, Japanese maples are easy for me to find with more character than the separated upper of this one. If I find a way to get more space, then I will most likely air layer everything. Ahh dreams...

Nice gotta check this place out some time. There's a closed down nursery place in Seatac that has some in ground trees that they are trying to get rid for $20 bucks before they bull doze the area. Let me know if you're interested.

I thought it best to trunk chop during dormancy. Looks like you’re doing it mid summer. Could you please advise? Thanks
If you want a hollow trunk as I did in this video, you can chop whenever you like. Otherwise, dormant period is good. Less sap seepage then.

That is exactly what happened😏.
One of the concepts used in bonsai is to simplify some attributes in order to change their impact on the image. In this case, having a more noticeable differentiation between one characteristic and another can be developed to highlight each portion. The process can appear to have immediate effects and it can take much longer to see the true plan come to fruition. Bonsai is a patient art.
What a bummer you didnt show how you break that trunk.
Should have done air-layering for that maple and deciduous tree’s trunk carving will end up rotting and wont last long. But still it looked nice.
I agree. The hollow trunk will look nice on that one when it finally does rot enough... though it may be awhile based on my experience with maples around here. I have maples I’ve been working with for 5 years with the intention of creating a hollow and they have hardly rotted so I have had to use a die grinder to artificially create the hollow with the still hard maple wood. Also, I have another video you can watch to hear about my criteria for air layering. I do actually layer some trees. Just not ones that don’t meet my criteria.😁.

Do maples need that cut paste for big cuts like that or no
Trees have survived naturally caused damage without cut paste for a very long time, so I’d say no. It doesn’t need the cut paste. But, if a super smooth wound that becomes perfectly smooth over time is the goal, then smear on some cut paste. It’ll reduce sap loss and allow the callus tissue to roll over nicely in a more controlled fashion.

There are several native pines that can be collected from the wild near me. I rarely collect wild material though. I prefer to find material from local neighborhoods that people would like to remove. It makes the transition to bonsai life well and it saves it from being sent to the rubbish bin.
Do you ever airlayer maples that you bought? It seems a shame that you chop a tree and discard the top. For instance the maple with red leaves. Is that a 'bloodgood'? There's probably two or three nice trees in the top. Just wondering. Great video!

I agree... Beautiful Acer Palmatum bloodgood... Would have air-layered it into al least 3 trees...
Maples grow like weeds in my yard.
Literally.
There are hundreds of new seedlings every year from the big bloodgood maples planted in the ground. They grow fast too.
I guess that leads me to not create much more of the same looking material from nursery stock. The parts I remove and discard I consider sacrifice branches which have served their purpose of thickening the lower trunk.
I do intend to show some air layering content this year on a maple I obtained specifically to layer off. Not that I need more trees, but this particular one I’m planning to layer has plenty of character worth saving. It’ll be fun!
Nurseries in my are don't have trees similar to what you are showing.
What do they have?

Here’s some of my thoughts 💭
If the goal is to disguise a human intervention, then you are right on target. Clean and smooth and cut paste is the way to go.
If the goal is to tell a story of a tree surviving damage caused by nature, then rip it! I realize that’s still human intervention, but the effect is close enough to natural damage for it to be believable.
Most of the trees that demand my attention have scars that tell a story. I like Bonsai the same way.
Majority of the time the trashy looking nurseries the cooler material

It could have been air layered, but I chose not to. Check out the video I did on air layering to see my decision making process when it comes to rooting the top of a tree prior to cutting it off.

rule 1: never cut flush on maples as they die back, that branch you snapped will die back and make a big hollow.
You are correct. If a smooth and unscarred tree is desired, the way I showed is not going to heal smoothly.
I enjoy some character on trees, though. Hollows, knots, lumps, etc. help tell the story of a tree that has persevered through the challenges of life. That’s why I prefer to prune with only hands when possible. The scars appear more natural when ripped compared to when cut.
