    I thought in your white car rustoleum video you recommended 70-30 for the paint. Any reason your going with 60-40 now?

    • @WHITLEYAUTOWORKS
      @WHITLEYAUTOWORKS  8 днів тому

      I tend to recommend 70 - 30 starting out so you don't go too thin and run it but you can adjust the consistency to your liking there's people who prefer 50 50 because there used to spraying it thinner so I recommend doing a small test spray out to figure out what you like the best depending on how you spray thanks for watching

    How long does this take to dry? Because I used ruustolen paint and it was tacky and very soft. Even months later I don't know if it ever cured because it doesn't have a good quality hardemer in it.

    • @WHITLEYAUTOWORKS
      @WHITLEYAUTOWORKS  3 місяці тому +1

      It takes a few weeks to harden up good sometimes what you thin it with also plays a factor in the cure out but adding a enamel catalyst hardener to it such as majic brand from tractor supply will substantially decrease your dry time and make it harden up like single stage automotive paint

    I have a question... if you would have sprayed a base coat of white, then red, do you have to let the white dry before you start spraying the red? If so do I need to sand the white with 1000 grit paper? I am trying to teach myself. Thanks

    • @WHITLEYAUTOWORKS
      @WHITLEYAUTOWORKS  Місяць тому +1

      If you wanted to go that route I would have primed it in white primer rather than paint then did the red paint for easier coverage but you don't want to go higher than 600 before paint because you want the paint to have enough bite to the surface so it holds up long term thanks for watching!

    The wait time between coats ?? Do you ever use Japan drier ? If you do add clear coat how long before applying the clear coat ? 60 % & 40 % acetone what numbers would that be on a paint bucket ?

    • @WHITLEYAUTOWORKS
      @WHITLEYAUTOWORKS  3 місяці тому +1

      I typically wait 20 to 30 minutes between coats an hour after my last coat before I do clear coat and check and see if it's tacky but not pulling paint off with my finger you can use Japan dryer or a catalyst hardener Japan dryer you add it 10% to the mix and the catalyst hardener is the whole thing to a gallon. As far as 60% paint 40% acetone is pretty much the same as a 3 to 1 mix on your paint cup thanks for watching

  • @RaulCalderon-n9r
    @RaulCalderon-n9r 2 місяці тому +1

    Awesome job as always. For a budget rustoleum paint job on an old truck, would it be fine to just sand the existing clear off to make it dull, and hitting it with paint? If so, what grits would you use to prep it for the paint?

    • @WHITLEYAUTOWORKS
      @WHITLEYAUTOWORKS  2 місяці тому

      Yes as long as the clear is in decent enough shape that's perfectly fine just sand it with 400 or 600 grit wet sand and you will be good to go thanks for watching

  • @brandoncoldcall
    @brandoncoldcall 2 місяці тому +1

    Hey man thanks for the vid series, how long did you wait for that rusty primer to dry before working on it? I bought some and was about to spray it for a trailer project but was told it takes forever to dry. Some folks said up to a month?

    • @WHITLEYAUTOWORKS
      @WHITLEYAUTOWORKS  2 місяці тому

      I gave it a good 24 hours before I actually sand it on it I've heard the same thing about it but I didn't have any issues through the gun I know the spray can version can be a little softer and I gave it a few hours as well I will say there are definitely better primers out there but for purpose of the video I wanted to show people you can do it but you got to give it plenty of time to dry and most people are very impatient I would mostly recommend something cheap automotive wise if you're worried about having issues I'll include a link amzn.to/4cPZiP6

      @@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS yes, I would probably give it at least a week as well considering it seems like rustoleum seems to take longer to harden. Although I have never used acetone to mix with it. I’ve always used mineral spirits. It seems like the acetone might allow it to dry quicker.

    Quick and neat. Rustoleum, doesn't get the respect it deserves. Tough stuff... trouble is, maybe once people find out how well it works the prices are gonna go up. Used to be that a gallon of Rustoleum pro was 30 bucks about 8 years ago. A quart was 8 bucks and change. Double that now. Still a bargain. Lowes seems to have the best prices anymore. Not a plug, just what it is.
    Me, I'd have cut it 50-50 with acetone, helps keep orange peel down, just need to watch for runs. But that's just me. 😏 Still, great job looks nice. Kudos, bro.

    I painted several spare fenders I practiced with bondo with small dents and a practice hood I got from LKQ with rustoleum professional saftey red but with rattle cans getting consistently good results I can confirm what was mentioned in the video the paint is very very glossy with no clear coat partially painted a SUV very good results with professional gloss balck. I saw your video on the 08 Civic you painted with rustoleum gloss black that lasted about 5 years in the sun no clear coat and very minimal washing or waxing. I want your opinion do you think the saftey red would last as long as the black paint used to paint the Civic under same conditions outside in the sun all it's life little to no shade? Of Course if I ceramic coat or wax the car often the paint gloss will last longer then doing nothing which I will do I will in the future paint a 99 Civic Coupe that was painted in the past and the shop did not do the best work prep work wise and spraying of the paint so I have some body work I will do and have to correct some things the shop messed up but will definately paint it using saftey red looks good like the Milano red Honda paint.

    • @WHITLEYAUTOWORKS
      @WHITLEYAUTOWORKS  3 місяці тому

      Yes I agree it looks a lot like Milano red on the em1 Civic si and answer your question about how it will hold up most the time every color other than gloss black for me has stayed glossy for a year or two at least before it starts fading obviously you can always like you said go back and wax it or if you really wanted to get crazy you could sand it back down 600 grit and put a clear coat on it so there's many other options and for the money you can't really beat it thanks for watching

      can you cut an buff this stuff....does it orange peel?

    • @WHITLEYAUTOWORKS
      @WHITLEYAUTOWORKS  3 місяці тому +1

      @417jackrabbit Yes you can cut and buff it you have to give it a week or two to really harden good but yes depending on what you finish sanding with and how your gun sprays you can get some orange peel like with any paint job but you can always go back and buff it out or if you really want to get crazy with it wet sand it and apply 2K urethane clear coat for an automotive quality finish thanks for watching

    John, does the acetone make it dry quicker since it has a faster evaporation point than naphtha or mineral spirits??

    • @WHITLEYAUTOWORKS
      @WHITLEYAUTOWORKS  3 місяці тому +1

      Honestly I'm not quite sure I know acetone really dries out quick and I didn't really go the route of adding any hardener simply because the next two days were almost 100° out so I just let it bake but yeah thinning it with either or works fine from what I've heard I've just always used acetone

    • @IowaBudgetRCBashers
      @IowaBudgetRCBashers 3 місяці тому +1

      @@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS I’m used to lacquer and acetone definitely makes it dry faster than using slow reducer. I’ve never used medium or fast , so was curious. Thanks
