    Hello. Helpful videos thanks so much. I, like you, live in a subtropical climate. We’re at the southern most tip of Texas by the bay. Do you have to take any special precautions during the summer to protect various stages from overheating? I’m just getting into raising quail and debating whether brooder and grow out box should be in garage with door open or outside I. Fenced off area with shade so that breeze can move through the pens. Any advice would be appreciated. We hit high 90s but the heat index is like 108-110

    Hello I've been watching your videos to learn about quail. I am a first time guail keeper. My eggs are still in the incubator and I have a couple of questions for you. 1st how long do you leave in incubation I have read several opinions from 18 to 24 days. 2nd I've noticed your quail are strictly kept in cages I have a quail house if you will but am wondering if they need any foraging time as they get older and would a wire mesh of 1x2 opening for the roof about 8 feet tall allow them to fly away? Thanks for all your knowledge I really like your videos

      if coturnix 18 days

    • @yanwu9099
      @yanwu9099 3 роки тому +1

      18 days for Coturnix quails ( may range 17 to 22 days)
      Stop turning the eggs at day 15 and lay them on their sides to help hatch.(lockdown) Raise the humidity to about 65% or the chicks will die in their shell
      May be different depending of the breed of quail
      When they dry up carry them one by one into the brooder and dip their beaks in the water just so they know where it is
      If they eat before they drink after hatching, they may get a pasty butt
      You also have to put marbles or pebbles in the water so they don’t drown no matter how shallow the tray is
      Quails much prefer a large area with grass and dirt to forage and pick in and it is much more similar to their natural environment

    4x8 and we kept 100 birds.

    Shipped Eggs get a bad reputation from people who have no experience or poor equipment. I have hundreds of various birds, and I can tell you that eggs are extremely resilient! Unless they are cracked, smashed, or sent in the unholy hell months of summer, the egg is probably not the reason for a low hatch rate! Just sayin'! Go GQF Cabinet Incubator, and stop the excuses for good! :) PS, I am going to build your insulation board cabinet incubator to use as the wife of my GQF Sportsman, she will be the hatcher. Thanks for that brilliant share!

    • @CoturnixCorner
      @CoturnixCorner  5 років тому

      Thanks for commenting, and I hope you enjoy your incubator build. I've hatched well over a thousand eggs with mine and have gotten some very good hatch rates, even a 100% hatch on 120 eggs. Yes, equipment and experience does matter, but most breeders won't guarantee much over a 50% hatch rate mainly due to the fertility factor and being unable to control the handling once the eggs leave their farm. You are right the eggs are resilient, I had a box of eggs come in that looked like it was run over by a truck and still got a decent hatch. If I get a lower hatch rate it's usually due to the egg being infertile.

    • @ericmueller6836

      I've had a hatch rate as low as "I shouldn't have shipped Turkey eggs in a chicken egg carton?"

      Hello Azam, I would consider a battery backup system that you can turn on in the event of a power outage. Also, insulating the brooder so it holds the heat longer will help. You could also make a small insulated box large enough for all the chicks to fit into, they will huddle inside the box and their body heat will keep the temperatures inside the box warm enough for them to survive until the power comes back on. Also placing a substrate on the flooring, hay or wood chips can help hold the heat. Hope this gives you some ideas. Thanks for subscribing and thanks for commenting.
