      You can also let the water cycle itself back into the reservoir for a while, to get hotter, before you swing the spigot back, and start brewing... (for better results).

      They do but you have to buy a subscription to America's Test Kitchen magazine to get the full results just as one has to do with Consumer Reports. Their UA-cam videos usually cover the top performer and if applicable a less expensive good performer which is much more generous than anything Consumer Reports reveals for free. ATK and CR are not influencers so they are not being paid by the brands to review the products nor are they being provided with the products they test for free, they go out and buy what they test just as a regular consumer has to do.

  • @Zaegel74
    @Zaegel74 4 роки тому +9

    Purchased the Bonavita coffee maker after seeing your last review. I really like it, but want to acknowledge one design flaw. After the coffee is brewed, you have to remove the section with the coffee grounds/filter and put it on a plate. There is no stopper under the grounds/filter, so it will leak for several minutes until the grounds are dry enough to go in the trash. Also, I still have to microwave the coffee for 20 seconds after brewing to get it hot enough to drink.

    • @GarryDeWitt
      @GarryDeWitt 4 роки тому

      Couple things, as I also own the Bonvaita (I got the 1901ts, slightly updated with 1.3l carafe and the brew basket attaches to the top rather than sits on the carafe).
      1. the brew basket situation is one that needs addressing, I always toss my grounds immediately after finishing brewing but I've gotta keep them over the carafe while I do it because yes they do drip a little, annoying.
      2. more importantly related to your comment about microwaving after brewing: I tested the brew temp in the carafe without preheating at 4 and 6 cups (the demarcated lines on the fill tank) respectively when I got it, and got readings between 179 and 182 Fahrenheit. Using ambient temperature water in the water reservoir (60F).
      If your numbers are off from this I'd either A: make sure you're brewing a minimum of 4 cups (I think they recommend this as the minimum because below this and the water doesn't get up to temperature enough during the brew process, resulting in underextracted and undertemp coffee), and if you are contact Bonavita and get some help.
      might also help to preheat the carafe with hot water from the tap (I wouldn't preheat the water in the tank much beyond 80 or so though)

      @applec2400 4 роки тому

    I own a technivorm and confirm, a good brewer does really help. That being said, if you’re getting preground coffee from a grocery store, the maker won’t really change the quality much. If you want an inexpensive option, a pour over cup and a kettle works great for a cup at a time.

      The Bunn coffee maker made in Germany is hard to beat. Has a heated Reservoir so the temperature of the water is consistent throughout the shower process. It has a deep basket and taller filter to allow for quicker Brewing probably in the four-minute range maybe less. I've been using one since 1994 in my home. I use a moccamaster 1 cup brewer; only found online. It works great, but not cheap. I do not need 8 cups of coffee, since it’s just me drinking it.
    When I visited my friend’s home who has a ‘Mr Coffee’, I can still make a 1 cup of coffee perfect, but there’s a trick: Take the pot away from the machine. Brew the coffee, and time it for about 4 minutes. After the timer goes off, put the coffee pot in place; the coffee will quickly pour into the pot. A little bit of work, but it made a perfect cup every time. For convenience, I still prefer my moccamaster 1 cup brewer.

  • @vociferonheraldofthewinter2284
    @vociferonheraldofthewinter2284 4 роки тому +6

    You don't have to push the brew arm back for the Mr. Coffee. If you forget, there's a little piece of plastic on the lid that moves the arm back over the basket automatically when you close the lid. Unless that piece is snapped off, it will never flow back into the tank. (I currently have that exact coffee maker)
    So there really is only one extra step. Move the arm back to put the basket in place. You can't forget to do that because you can't put the basket back if you do. It's not a deal breaking feature.
    I use 1.25 ounces (heaping 1/3rd of a cup) of coffee per full pot and it's plenty strong enough. I wouldn't go over 1.75 or you lose the lining of your stomach.

    ATK, at 1:56, the host misrepresented herself. Would you please take another look at the machine? I’m not sure if she was reading from a script but she is incorrect. We have the same Mr. Coffee. If you have a chance to review the video, please pay close attention to the placement of the shower head when it was swung over the water reservoir. Look at the interior of the lid. Do you see that black protrusion on the interior of the lid? The function of that protuberance is to automatically swing the hot water dispenser directly over the center of the coffee ground receptacle/coffee filter should the operator forget. Please think about re-upload the video as you take a chance of your audience calling the validity of your videos into question. I really appreciate your videos and had not heard of the Bonavita Coffeemaker. It looks wonderful and I will definitely look into purchasing one. ☕️❤️👏🏻

    So I bought a Bonavita based on this review. My unit's showerhead would not uniformly spread the water over the grounds. I would recommend that you run water through and see if the showerhead does what it's supposed to do. It has 11 holes, including the central one. In my unit, only 3 of the front ones worked. In looking at some of the other reviews on Amazon of this unit, you can see similar complaints. There must be a design flaw. It's definitely something to keep track of, so buyer beware.

      This co. was one of the few that brought a more affordable maker that provided a "bloom" time function. Maybe call the company. Could be it is supposed to start by moistening the grounds, letting it "bloom" and then go full showerhead. Worth checking out. And, company is revamping because of "copiers" in the field. I bought the Bonvaita because of this review but sent it back after a few weeks. It makes nice coffee but you'll notice it brews without the lid on it. If you don't immediately screw the cap on the carafe when it's done brewing, your coffee will get cold quickly. The carafe with the lid on it doesn't fit under the filter so you have to remove the pot and place it separately on the counter. When you remove it, coffee drips continuously from the filter. I have a Bonavita. It sitting on a shelf under my cabinet and I don't use it. I did for couple years. It does make OK coffee. Paid a little bit more for the ninja coffee bar. I wish you would do a reliability test. The top inexpensive coffee maker will only last six months plus or minus one month. They do have amazing customer service, I have had three different models, each was replaced at around the six to eight months mark because it stopped brewing and once it began to fail it was only a few more weeks before it would die completely. I did clean it, used filtered water, you name it - no matter what they will not make it to a year! DO NOT BUY THE Bonavita!

    So the shock takeaway from this test is that 30% of the water brewed in the SCAA approved and test winning Bonavita is outside the magic (and apparently necessary) 195 - 205°F range. That's not exactly what I call acing all the tests.

    I bought the Bonavita about a year ago. Makes great coffee, but my one big complaint is that the design of the carafe doesn't let you pour the last bit of the brewed coffee out. There is always a little bit left in the pot that doesn't pour out, and when you're only making one cup, it's annoying.

You can get to around $99 if you go with a glass carafe or go with their Hanging Filter Basket and Thermal Carafe, BV1901TS model. However I hate when people play bait and switch. I've tried using a French press because It gives me the most control over time and temperature. I find that water temperatures of 19O° brewed for 4 minutes produces bitter coffee. When I use the same ground coffee in a 15 year old inexpensive Cuisinart coffee maker, the result is amazing coffee. I measured the temperature of the water, in the Cuisinart, when it meets the grounds and found it to be 170°. I then tried reducing then water temp in my French press to 165° with no improvement. The easy solution would be to make coffee in my old Cuisinart. But that machine is in a vacation home 2 hours away. Lol. Thanks for the video.

    • @seikibrian8641

      In a drip coffee maker the water is flowing through the grounds; in a French press the grounds are soaking in the water. So 4 minutes in one isn't the same as 4 minutes in the other. For a French press, try 190°F for 3 minutes.

    All the numbers and the tests are fine, but at the end of the day, this would have been more interesting and useful if you have shown us the tasters feedback during the blind taste test... for example, they might have all put the Bonavita on top, but we might have also learned that there's a marginal difference in taste if any compared to the two runner ups... some of us might be ok missing out on this marginal difference to get a coffee maker for $30-$50 range...

    I bought the Bonavita BV1900TS a little over 2 years ago. It makes the best tasting drip coffee IMO (brewed from freshly ground whole beans). I love it, except within the first year, small cracks began forming at the top of the plastic reservoir. Now if I fill it near the top, water leaks through the cracks. I’m disappointed because the coffee really does taste great brewed from this machine. I believe I’m out of warranty for a replacement though.

    I find coffee makers like Mr. Coffee give the water a bad taste. It can be hard to notice when you make coffee. Try this little test: Run a full carafe of water thru without any coffee or filter. Let the water come back to room temperature and have a taste test with plain water. there's a big difference in my book. I boil water in a kettle and use my melita cone to make coffee. Easy, cheap and tastes great. I find this same bad taste with water that comes out of those insinkerator faucets that give you hot water instantly.

      you could check out the model number up there. also, reddit.com/r/coffee for a lot of other options. The concensus is always the grinder is more important than the brewer. The video is absolutely correct when it comes to sour = underextracted; bitter = overextracted. A grinder means that the grounds are more uniform. Because if it's not, the smaller ones will give that bitter flavor, and the larger ones the sour flavor.
