Looked at a Girsan plain jane and a Springfield SA-35 at two different LGS. The Girsan was noticeably heavier than the 1983 Browning HP I had. Handled the SA-35 at other shop and it felt like the same weight as I recall the HP. Both guns were empty. That really stumped me as to the cause.
I got their Beretta 92 clone, the Regard. They make some pimped ones but I preferred the bare bones style except for the accessory rail. Really premium quality except maybe the finish wears a bit easy.
Just bought a MCP35PI Match. Wish to God I would have found it before I bought my SA35 Springfield. Now I'm sell the Springfield. That Girsan is just as accurate and just as reliable as the SA35. But a hell of a lot cheaper. By about $150. It's my main CC next to my Taurus Tx22 compact.
A little off topic, but in my experience a lot of ppl tend to knock Taurus (and I personally always thought their semi-autos were kinda ugly), but I have a G3 tactical and a TX22 now as well, and they both are incredibly accurate and fun pistols to shoot. The G3 tac has a pretty damn good (not great) re-fire trigger with an awesome reset. That said... I finally got my hands on a GX4 XL today, and the copy-cat Canik combat trigger was disappointing...

I love the Browning High Power. I always wondered why it was never shortened, lightened and offered in various versions, the way the 1911 has been. 🤷♂
Good point. I will never understand why to have a useless paper weight when you can have a single shot pistol to face surprises while exchanging magazines ON A MILITARY PISTOL! That safety is stupid.
I have a 1969C model Belgium Hi-Power, it is my favorite pistol and is in 95% original condition. It is a beautiful gun and is one of the classics of all time.
I carried a HiPower in the British military it was a good pistol but could sometimes slide-bite you, so I see the Beaver tail on this one is a lot better.
Even back in the late 60’s we could get 15 round magazines from Brazil. I carried a HP and a 1911 for years while working as a private contractor…both at the same time. The HP was the high cap backup. Still have a Belgium 1972 one. Now a safe queen.

I've always complained about the Hi Power never being compact enough for carry. Hopefully the trend will take off and there will be holster support for this down the road.
The extended beavertail has a second function: protect the sear if the pistol falls over its hammer; the leverage is huge, may damage sear, hammer or both. A decocker would be nice too. Turks are getting better and better on this field.
I have a Browning FN Hi-Power that has polished blue finish and tangent sights. Probably my favorite gun. Also have the Girsan Hi-Power full size and it's an excellent gun.
The rare Argentinian Made FM Detective High Power is the Bee's Knees, Argentina, military got a license and machinery from FN Browning to make their own military Hi Powers, and they were the first ever to shorten the High Power. The FM Detective was imported starting in 1991 for a few years. They are fairly rare and coveted. I have one and have put over 20 thousand rounds thru it. I Never had a single malfunction, and it devoured any ammo i fed it. I recently bought another brand new never fired one. After about 500 rounds of break in i will use it for CCW and use the other for a range gun. If you ever have the chance to get one don't miss out. They pop up on GB a few times a year.
I had one and the only thing that did not appeal was it had some kind of a poly finish like a CZ 75. YOU can get thin grips from Brownells to make it even slimmer. Or could.
I've noticed a number of Turkish guns have safeties which are kind of stiff to engage but easy to disengage. It's possible that is by design to help mitigate the problem some people have when racking the slide and inadvertently sweeping the safety on.
The other thing I see is that they did away with the mag safety. That allows free drop on the empty mag as well as tightening up the trigger a bit. Looks like I'll have to add another Hi Power to my KBI and my Browning. The Browning was my first CC firearm, big but skinny and not bad to carry. Looking forward to a lighter, shorter version with full mag.
I absolutely love the OPS MCP35, and the PI OPS, and the LW variants from Girsan. They are smooth and tight, no slop in slide to frame fitment,. The trigger is better than the original Hi Power, but it's how it feels in hand and point of aim is were it really shines. Great review of an affordable alternative to a $900+ 2311, that's also a Girsan, but not nearly as good. IMAO
I would love to have a Hi Power at my age I am not sure that will ever happen, still pretty happy with my 9mm Cougar and PT 92 AF plus various other calibers 1911- .357. No plastic guns for me. My Cougar was made in Turkey had 0 issues with it, my carry gun.

See, why didnt FN ever update the Hi-Power the way Colt has done with the 1911? Novak-style sights, G10 grips, some bevelling here, some checkering there, and most of all, a new safety-less trigger couldve kept this a viable product for them.
Great idea. I hope Girson's idea catches on and they deserve credit for what should be a huge swan song of a comeback for the hi- power. What if we had a 2011 type version, etc? It's a great platform that can be improved on to the moon. Just hope other (better) manufacturers jump on this trend I'd love to see.

Must be nice to have a browning high power. Thank you for the review. I'm glad they came out with this in answer to another competitor that charges too much.
I used to only carry 40/45, but the ballistics and stopping power of today's 9mm shouldn't be underestimated. The higher capacity is just to attractive along with the improved ballistics for me. My single stack backup is still a 40 though.
Weird how the British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand SAS, FBI HRT, etc all chose to retain that magazine disconnect. Ditto for pretty much every military that issued the pistol. Wonder what those guys didn't learn fighting in wars and hunting down terrorists that our home grown American kitchen table gunsmiths knew.
One of my favorite pistols is the Browning Hi-Power. I consider them very accurate, and in capable hands, that accuracy is very high. A compact version? I would love to find one, in good condition, at least.
I’m not going to lie, it’s a beautiful handgun. I like this size and would definitely consider buying one. The website doesn’t list the width, which is important for carry.
I bought one. My dad carried a hp for 40 years and I have his after he passed. I get bit when shooting it so I purchased the exact gun in this video. I really like it, but I have a couple of small complaints. The guide rod is a pain in the ass to get back in. I have big hands, and the grip on the left side gets in the way of flipping the safety up. I fixed that with my Dremel. And the barrel being so hi pollished it's over kill. I plan on using some emery cloth to knock it down some. Other than what was stated on the rear sight, it's a great gun. Wish it would of been made again sooner. I know that the Argentine hp model was close. I think it was called the detective model.
No he wouldn't - he had little to nothing to do with the prototype concept or the development to the final P35. He gave it a shot after the start but both his striker fired designs were rejected as the original prototype was.
Nice beavertail. I may be wrong but even the Gen 3 from FN and the new Springfield clone didn't have that 1911 type beavertail. I dated a gal that had an original FN Hi Power in her night stand...she had no idea what it was, just how to shoot it. She was prior military as well as her dad, uncle, etc. I love the original but the hammer bite sans beavertail...
Looks neat! Now we need a threaded barrel and a comp that returns it to the original look and length, but only adds back an ounce or two...an optic with a rear sight notch and a proper height front sight...and a month or two at B&H Spring! Great video!
15 rounds, impressive. But still a little too large for compact concealed carry. Overall this looks like a very high quality gun for the money. Looks like a great shooter at the range.
Not sure I buy that. Compared to Glock 19, same (essentially) length/width/height/mag capacity, and only 4 or 5 ounces more weight. For a gun that is better than a Glock in just about regard, cannot weight to buy one.
Nice gun. As far as the flat wire spring I'm not sure about. I bought a sig p320 and the first time I shot it the spring came out of the front of my gun. After examining the problem. I realized that under high pressure the flat wire spring leaned enough to escape the front of the pistol. Man was I pissed off when that happened.
I don't know which one but I saw a Wilson Combat video on the 1911 where they said flat recoil springs were more durable than round wire. From my mechanic background I would say that is true. A flat wire spring will not bind as easily as a round wire spring when you reach the limit of compression.
In a sea of polymer pistols, this really stands out positively.

I'd buy that over any Springfield Armory. All day any day
Awesome review mate 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks for video. This is what FN should have made.
Those Argentine compact sized HPs from years ago were pretty nice little pistols.
YES Ive been hoping someone besides that one obscure company in Brazil would pick up on this idea.
Another solid review from Sootch00, Excellent job bud!
