There's quite a bit of people out there who enjoy fried smelt, so maybe consider trying a different preparation or approach to try and preserve a better taste from them? I mean 75% of the planet hates durian, but I'm part of the 25% who know it's the king of fruits and the others are missing out. So when life gives you lemons or durians, or in this case, smelt, you can try and figure out a way to like them to keep your options open and enjoyment higher...
Every year up here in the foothills we usually have some big fires and big smoke. It's the norm but can't say we get used to it. I feel for the costal folks that are having problems breathing. Those are some serious burns going on. Stay safe! My first thought when you brought in the slime fish was crab snare bait, too bad.

Ish With Fish we both grew up poor, old Benicia bridge was the spot to catch a bucket full of smelt when tide is outgoing. I’d never eat one now but back then you ate what was fed to you. Hahaha hope to see you out at HMB for crab opener. Last year was a banner year. I musta taken home over 200 crabs with all the times I went out.
I've been out half a dozen times since the fires started, and I definitely feel like the bite has turned off recently even with the red tide clearing up. Fewer barred perch far out, more walleyes and silvers in the waterline breakers.
i've never had luck with smelt as bait, even baby ones. if a mackerel, chovy or herring is around i defer to those first. hope you're good man! btw my last breath hold was 60 sec lol, working on it.
alright...I moved down from idaho mtns...Im living at beach in washington...Im goin fishing in the surf...I would say on about every other cast...Im catching 3 inch sculpin and my red tail perch are very small....sculpin even hit the calissa...never even seen a sculpin in your videos...what am I missing here?
Looked like a rough day man, thank you for the vid:) Do you de-barb your hooks? It looked like it to me but my eyes are not what they used to be either. I de-barb my hooks because I've gotten to the age where if I miss one, oh well, there will be more.

smelt are notorious for worms. cut one open and it can look like spaghetti bursting out 🤢 i toss them back unless i'm drifting for lingcod or halibut.
i did a catch and cook before on smelt.worst catch n cook ever! no matter how much butter!

The smoke is going to be a normal thing for California summers.

hmm tbh ive never seen a sculpin in bay area surf. maybe go with a bigger lure aka joe baggs or sp minnow?

i didn't here but i do when sharks and rays are present. barbless soooo much easier releasing those.
