The Elder Scrolls Online is testing a new Monetization Strategy called Customized Actions. Customized Actions will live in a player's collections menu and will provide new visual effects and animations for existing actions like harvesting resources and fast travel.
In a recent ESO Live, Gina Bruno stated that Custom Actions will only be available for purchase through the Crown Store and via Crown Crates not through in-game activities such as defeating monsters, finishing dungeons or completing quests.

I've studied videogame economies at a university, and man the lectures were awkward as hell. Even the professor wasn't into it. And I don't blame them at all. The irony was that once we went to our student-run gamedev studio, monetization was one of those subjects that we rarely talked about, nor wanted to talk about.

Indeed, developers do not have the final say in what happens with the game they maintain. Remember this, game manufacturers is business. Business takes money. Stakeholders always want more of it. One way to stop the ridiculous monetization in the gaming industry is to stop purchasing stuff that doesn't really add value to a game. I play games for its content, silly shit like a 2 second animation isn't all that memorable when it comes to the experience of expertly written quests and dialogue.

The monetization in ESO is a big part of the reason I am playing other games. When the first thing you see as you log in is the crown store it tells you what they are focusing on. Being able to earn rewards is something that keeps people playing. Having to spend real money on top of purchasing the game and paying a subscription is just going to turn people away.

But no, we are waiting months for a single update, a single zone at a time with months apart with equal or worse quality, i.e. In Blackwood there were misspells in text, High Isle had people with missing torsos and quests that would break. The only things that don't have a lot of issues are Crown Store goodies. These Zone DLCs aren't huge for MMO standards so quality should be skyrocketing in lack of the quantity, so why are these problems here???
There's something more going on than just some overworked devs oppressed by shadow people. I think overall there's a lot of issues inside ZoS, there's likely resource allocating since they're suppose to be working on a new game, and ESO has always had a rocky lifespan. If it weren't for One Tamriel, the game would've been dead.

So we can’t get new classes/races because the code can’t handle it, but it seems adding unlimited animations is totally fine long as we have to pay for them. Wonder how much they would make if everyone came together and decided no t to play for a week or so, maybe that would make a statement

    • @SkyrimBeast

Refraining from playing wouldn't hurt ZOS. Everyone who plays this game had to purchase it at one point or another. I think players need to ask themselves how important that new Crown Store shiny really is. If the answer is "not important and forgettable", then save your money.

We've not had a new combat skill line since 2018, last class came in 2019, no new weapons have been added ever. If they won't do that they could instead balance or rework existing skills but they don't do that either. The entire vampire skill line is HORRIBLE, NB is the only one who gets some use out of it. For me, personally, this game has ALWAYS had a problem with monetization.
Initially, it was *just* charging WAY too much for how little you're actually getting. Other issues would be things like limiting assistants (bankers not having guild bank, merchants not being able to repair, etc). With Housing, there was a LOT of really great stuff but it's still WAY too pricey for how little you get. Maybe if they had a "Craft bag" style set up for furnishings it wouldn't be so bad, but that's just a personal gripe.
The other major issue is just how out of touch the devs seem to be on all of this stuff. Not just in pricing but just what the players want, or more so, keeping this stuff running properly. They're going to introduce custom actions, which i REALLY like, but they're going to be way too costly for what they are and they're likely going to be buggy. Either buggy AF or constantly breaking because of how they were added. Look at the blade of woe or vampire feeding. I get, *maybe* one animation for each around 85-90% of the time. Always. Just that one animation. I KNOW there are MORE than that, it just always seems to be that one animation. Adding in custom animations, i just see that being something that "mostly works" or works so infrequently, they just drop it and pretend like it never happened, likely saying "it wasn't making enough money to keep going" despite the reason it doesn't make money being that it doesn't work right.
I LIKE the idea, i just don't have the faith in the team to really do this idea well or not abuse the concept for monetization. Maybe if they fleshed out the Personalities to have more of these things, it wouldn't be so bad, but again, they just don't really put the effort in for that sort of thing.

If I were a dev, I would have proposed both acheivement & store versions of stuff like this.
I would've made it so you equally get a basic version via either achievement or crown store, then you can get an upgraded version of the cosmetic once you do the other option, as a bonus.
It'd be not only about choice, but whichever way you choose to get the cosmetic, you still get it; and then have more choice to upgrade it at a later time, or leave it as is. Either way, you got it; and the bonus 2nd-route obtainability for something better is a way to encourage longevity through completionism.
On top of that, I would create hidden bonus achievements to further incentivize full acquisition.
So say you get all achievements for all the basic harvesting animations. Then, you purchase all the animations from the crown store to unlock all their upgraded particle effects. Boom! You now have a unique reward in the form of a new, exclusive cosmetic like a skin, costume, pet, emote, furniture item, memento, hat, mount, title, face & body paint, weapon skin, pet skin, dye, etc... that's related to that cosmetic collection.
    But that's just my feasible-logic...

This game has so much potential. If player feedback was used in decision-making, I truly believe they could make this game the greatest MMO of all time. A new game mode, class/race, more earnable cosmetics/mounts, raid ques, social environments (maybe even a hub for players to gather), etc. would breathe fresh life into the game, but sadly, I have a strong feeling that they are squeezing it dry to get any juice ($$$) left from it before working on a new project. The fact that crown crates still exist and that the endeavor system is such a joke provide additional proof that no long-term consideration for this game exists.
PS. I love your content and thank you for stating your opinion publicly. Here's hoping the decision-makers behind ESO actually watch their biggest content creators AND do something with the advise, as they currently seem completely out of touch with their playerbase!

I've had a gripe about this for a long time, being that all the cool stuff is from the store especially when it comes to mounts. The number of mounts obtainable in game is so limited compared to what you can buy either direct or from crown crates. And while I get that the subscription is optional, I think for many including myself it does not feel optional when I want to play ESO. ESO was my main game for years, I was part of a large Guild and the peak of the game for me was Summerset. Pretty soon I noticed the predatory monetisation seeping through, it all began in my opinion with the crown crates. I know I’m just one of many, but it’s sad to see considering I haven’t played this game in nearly a year. I was always on it with expansions, but lately it’s the same content style with every one. New zone, 6 world events, 6 delves, a trial, storyline and maybe one new small gimmick thing but nothing substantial. The genuine creativity is only expressed through their crown store. I wish they had more MMO competition on console as I feel this may drive them to produce better content, but who knows.

Yeah I've been seeing this more often too. I enjoy outfits and personalities. One of my favorite Personalities is Worm Wizard as it fits my Necromancer so well and that's part of the Dragon Bones DLC. Any friends I try to invite to play ESO with me, they sometimes ask me where I get what I get. More often than not I have to say "The Crown Store" and they get disgusted. These are the people they are targeting, the new players, and they are not fond of it period.
If less money is the problem, then why can't they just use it to be more creative? "Oh you want this? Well buy the new Zone DLC and you can earn it yourself!" Lately I've seen a lot of the things they are trying to get you to buy are more expensive than the Zones they sell to you. You'd think what little we got from the Zones, there'd be much higher quality and more rewards to earn. Instead we're getting less rewards and more buggy versions of the same thing we've been playing since this whole "Year Long Adventure" formula started.
Tbh, it wouldn't shock me if they went F2P in a couple years and just let the game die out at the rate the insane amount of greed and manipulation is going on. If things don't improve and the 2023 "Year Long Adventure" doesn't impress me, I think I'll be saving a lot of money when my Subscription ends.

The issue here isn't that the devs are doing it though, devs almost never have a say in what their tasks or the direction of the game is, it's almost definitely higher ups who want to make a quick buck to show shareholders the 'massive' growth monetarily.
This monetization model trades player count, and player goodwill to try and hook a few big spenders. You are all correct in saying that the majority of players don't want this, but unfortunately in this industry player feedback counts for less than nothing when the income the company generates is increasing, albeit most likely only short term.

Fantasy RPG revolve around the freedom to imagine endless possibilities in character creation, being able to create something personal and unique but having to pay for it is just rude. Here 1500 crowns = NZD$20.00. That's a lot of money just for a single new out fit slot on a single character and I like making outfits. Tyvm, HTM. I agree with you. I'm for new stuff in game with whatever is decided by ZOS....as long as it's earned not bought. There needs to be an earned version AND in store IF they are bent on putting in store.

I don't disagree in theory, but ESO is 8 years old and still has regular service updates. DLCs alone can't cover those expenses and ZOS has to find ways to support it. It's either that or let it die out over a couple of years. I would guess that probably 85% of those that have played over 2 years only spend money on ESO+ (like HTM mentioned) and spend little if anything extra on crown store purchases. Many of us purchase crown store items through legal ingame gold exchanges. My suggestion is to offer additional reward achievements, like being able to buy the houses for gold as well as crown store purchases. (It stinks that there isn't an option to furnish it without crowns.) Offer them in the store, but make it possible to earn them ingame as well. For example, it would make sense to add rewards like the new woodcutting and gathering effects after achieving GM crafting harvester. I personally think the antiquarian costume is one of the best costumes available and it's free.

I did think that the majority will likely buy the animations using saved up endeavourss rather than using crowns/gems as we don’t know what the price will be or are they going to be linked to in game activities such as antiquarian leads for instance. Guess time will tell.

I still play quite frequently but when it comes to overland questing I usually run right past those markers cause at cp 1600 what do i really have to gain from completing this quest? I would love of quests actually had good rewards to them, even if it was a weapon skin or have mythics tied behind quests, imagine they say this quarter your mythics are a secret and they are gotten by completing quests all over tamriel, everyone would be stopping at every marker to see what they might get.
This is coming from someone who 100% Skyrim all quests, all locations etc.
Even if they were to do away with crown crates, lower the cost of some crown items and have them in the store so people could actually buy what they want, I would be more inclined to spend money on crowns if i could actually get what I want and not take a risk on $50 for some potions and stews.

The sad thing is these would be cool and I would be all for it, IF they were earnable as well. ESOs monetization system has been my biggest issue with this fame since day one. I would absolutely love for more earnable mounts because I love collecting them, but there is just no sense of accomplishment. The wolf you get from scrying is my favorite because I had to do stuff for it

I just started getting back into Eso.
I originally played back on the og release for xb1.
So for me, there is a ton of content for a returning player, even got a month member ship to get to the dlc zones.
So if you been playing this for so long, yeah it will get stale, but for me however, I have been having fun with it, seeing stuff I missed out on.
They should just add akavir at this point, you wanna change things, lets go to akavir and see the snake people that were so feared about. Hell new playable and never before seen races.
    That will spice things up.

Been saying this since 2016. I saw this trend as a warning sign in this game from the release of one tamriel. The game started with a handful or interesting cosmetics that you could earn in-game, but it never increased. If you want to have retention time increase in ESO, there needs to be more rewards to earn in-game. It needs to be that the majority of cosmetics are found in-game by playing, and the minority can be bought from the crown store. That's why WOW is still alive 20 years after release.

    • @merpins
      @merpins Рік тому

If the devs really wanted to monetize it, they could add a "sneak peak" into the next DLC, and have cosmetics that you can earn in-game available for purchase 3-6 months before the content you can earn them in releases.

I have that glowing effect on one of my characters, by stopping halfway through a mages guild quest. Anyway, I have a bad feeling the game has been wriiten off. There were a lot of empty and unfinished parts to the High Isle map. I had wished they worked on that, rather than do the card game. I think the higher ups really don't care about the content though. It's kind of like how printers are so cheap, but the ink is astronomical in price. Instead of working more indepth on the map, or game play, and like you pointed out, giving some zones away for free, they shoot for the crown store items, for a quick profit.

I personally only ever bought 1 crown crate ever (which was when I first got the game and didn't know what to do with the 500 crowns you get with the base game package). And since I got eso+ as a present I only ever used the crowns for DLCs since I want to actually own my fav game extensions and categorically refuse to support gambling - and that whole crown crate system is exactly that.
I accept that my characters will never look as awesome as some others I see in game since I only get my hands on the free in-game customizations, but honestly I feel like the fact that I had to work for every face tattoo, costume or fancy eye color make them so much more valuable for me.

Have since paid more for each expansion than I did for the base game (which they discount on realease day and usually give most or a good part to everyone for free). 6 years of ESO plus and I don't know how many crown purchases. And now, these geniuses think I want to pay so I can wave my hands in a different way when I fast travel? They have truly lost their damn minds.

I had no idea they were doing this. Looks interesting and reminds me of Guild Wars 2 which also had purchasable tools for harvesting that had special animations and effects and so forth. I like that they are trying to allow players to be more customized but this is not the way to go about it.
In fact I think the whole crown store and crown crate system should not be used the way it is now and the endeavor system was a good start but was implemented poorly and does not work as i believe it was intended from a players or communities stand point. What should be done is allow everything in the crown store be earned by playing the game. Sure, some will be more expensive but should still have an option to spend in game gold on them. Guild Wars 2 has this option. All the Gem Store items have gem values as well as Gold values. You turn you gold into gems or vice versa and based on the current transfer rate the amount you get from each varies; like a real world economic system. With this system it rewards players for playing the game and earning gold; which they do by quests and looting and just about anything. Eventually once a player has all they will need or want for a character or all characters they have no need for gold, but, if they could buy Crown items with gold; or turn Gold into crowns then it would be amazing. And drop the endeavor system as you have to spend an entire year to get anything cool which is not what we as players wanted. The Guild Wars gem store method is in my opinion the best microtransaction system I have seen. I also like Sea of Thieves season pass where you can earn their micortransaction currency by progressing through the season by just playing, not doing special things just play the game and get rewarded. Sure, it sounds like giving things out for just participating but it encourages people to play. Also, if you give some out a player can earn by just playing they may end up spending the difference in cash; or take the Guild Wars 2 path and allow them turn their useless gold into crowns. Or just make it all earnable in game. Maybe have tasks that need completed to earn the items, like a blacksmith costume is earned by doing blacksmithing.

I do not play because of cosmetics or skins in the crown store, and I certainly and not their target audience for things like this. Sadly they are targeting their long-time player base who would want to spend real money and such a small change to their gameplay experience.

I really think that instead of coming out with new DLCs because the last one really sucked and the one before it wasn't all that great I would like to see them give more incentive to finish Zone questing I've been playing this game a long time and I still haven't finished many zones just because it gets so boring and I know the reward isn't worth it you touch on a lot of good points here and I do watch Lucky's Channel also I'm not sure what would make it better or worse but I know that I have probably spent the better part of 5 or $6,000 in the crown store over the time that I played I have several very elaborate houses and I really think that instead of having to purchase the houses with crowns if you could get a house for completing all of the content in a Zone they would probably get more money from people buying stuff to fill that free house along with other things you make very good points about character customization and I really like the idea of maybe a customer effect when you max out a weapon skill or a class but they need to stop with these boring ass DLCs I really do enjoy the year-long adventures idea but we don't need new content we need to continue or upgrade the content that we're already in like I really feel the molar ball storyline through Cold Harbor is very weak and I completed the whole Zone Quest on a level 15 character

The fact that every 3 weeks I needed to grind for a new armor set, gold it out and get the right traits was insane, especially with the somewhat limited inventory. I also have about 12 characters, which made it worse. Began to feel like I’m just working a job rather than playing the game

  • @georgesimmons5959

One has to pay to play, and we play to gather equipment and resources to support and advance our character(s). Nevertheless, often as not, I feel of late we are the minions to gather resources for the developers ~ for example to level a weapon or armor set (at max level or as desired) we will use our resources to do so: for example, a chest piece will consume 160 of raw material and to enhance its abilities 1 green, 3 blues, 4 purples, and 8 yellows and when we deconstruct, we get back 0 to 1 yellow glyph and 0 to minimum material. I will not even discuss Jewlery for the cost in time and gold is unrealistic because the return on deconstructing raw material is minimum allowing the Guild stores to charge unrealistic prices (throwing out ECON 101) for it's supposed to be a buyer's market not a seller's and I lay this at the developers' feet. Transition crystals will get you 0 or 25 on deconstruction and nothing else.
Consequently, if they want people to play their game and allow them to buy rather than earn their way this game will go the way of WoW and all others who dummied down their game for profit; those who are in this for the challenge, the graphics, and the story line will seek other roads to travel bringing their hay days to an end.
I remember when players complained of someone beating them to a node or other resources the response was 'this is not WoW', implying, learn to play.

Well, fi you look at Guild Wars 2, they actually have the same thing for GEMS. Only thing is that you can actually exchange ingame gold for GEMS, so if they implement this to Elder Scrolls Online, this will not limit it to players that has a money to spend, but also to players and use a lot of time ingame and get lots of ingame gold.
This could also be a good place to make a more safe ingame place for CROWNS exchange, for players that has lots of them, and that is okay with exchanging it for ingame gold.

in a game with tons of nice content like eso, it is really sad to see so much focus on crown store, it's okay to put stuff there, but overland content, dungeons, trials and arenas would be much more enjoyable if you could get cosmetics by completing them (like it already works with sets and mementos) or reaching certain CP just like it happens with costumes at the beginning.
I got to a point where im kind of stuck as a player, because stuff won't be rewardable enough for the time and effort necessary or will simply cost money.
