Primož Roglič "STEALS" Victory from Young Gino Mäder at Paris-Nice Stage 7 2021 | Huge Controversy
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 бер 2021
- Stage 7 of Paris-Nice 2021 had a revised route but the same finish up to La Colmiane, a climb that suited Roglic, already the leader on GC. A large breakaway group formed, including young swiss rider Gino Mader, but some strange decisions in the group behind meant this would turn out to be a very controversial finish.

RIP Gino. Fantastic man and fantastic rider
"Why not huh?"
You dont race to let other people win. You race to win. WTF that people expect Roglic to give away a win to someone else just because. Thats not racing.
Also all efforts to be a winner
Lanterne is king of commentary 👑👑
Would have loved him to commentate my wedding.
@@redditislife7997 would have ended the ceremony with a perfectly perfunctory Ciao
That dry Australian monotone....
Absolutely love it
I doubt roglic was even thinking about Mäder getting his first win when he attacked. He was working to hard to think anything. He was told on the radio to go so he went, that's it. The NBC reporters made Roglic sound like a villain but that's just not the case.
Roglic getting paid to win stageraces tho ?
If I want to watch a show about compromise and keeping up appearances, I'll put on seinfeld or something.. But I watch races to see all out, best man wins competition. Long as he isn't crashing his opponents out, winning is winning
@@timocallaghan4408 yesssss!
This is now the gold standard of cycling commentary on the net...
Gifting a win would have made more sense if the kid was pacing Roglic up the climb or was doing a lot of work with him in a small group.
In THAT situation if Roglic- as a big champion- gifts the win to the kid it's an immediate sign of respect and gratitude to a job well done... That makes sense...
This is different.
Gifting the win because its the popular thing to do is not going to wash well with the team or the sponsors or your GC position if the 10 second time bonus becomes important...
Also Roglic TRIED to slacken off the pace as you showed, but when Schachman and co came up in the last K his hand was forced and he HAD to go for the stage...
So while we all feel bad for the kid, he is a pro riding with the big boys and this is part of the game. If he wants revenge, then he should plan to pull a Pogacar and beat Roglic on the road...
So yeah, pity for Mader, but Roglic did his job.
I agree 100%.
If they were in the same group, and Mäder did a lot of pacing for Roglic, he probably should have "gifted" him the stage win.
But in this situtation, why shouldn't Roglic go for it?
Anyways, Mäder is still young, it wont take long for him to get his first of many victories.
I only wonder if he got surprised by Roglic, or he simply didn't have anything left in the tank.
@@dabeste6163 I think both and also the kid was a bit frustrated...But fair play to him, he was a pro about it on Twitter and he will live to fight another day....
Remember how close Marc Hirschi came to a win at the 2020 TdF? He got his rewards eventually. This kid will too👍🏾
Exactly
@@chrispyy606060606 For sure Roglic HAD to win the stage yesterday and he rode like a pro...
Yesterday Chris Horner made a very pro, very nuanced observation that LuLu Sanchez was NOT impressed when George Bennett came over the top of him to set a higher pace in the run up to yesterday's finish. It was a super observation that us non-pros would easily have missed.
Horner made the point that as a highly respected and deeply experienced road captain Sanchez was none too pleased by Bennett showing him up in his enthusiasm to up the pace. Bennet could have let LuLu do his thing for a k or so and then quietly upped the pace in a way that did not show the man up for riding slowly....
Bennett didn't do that and Horner noticed that it made Sanchez look bad in the peloton yesterday Fast forward 24hrs till today and it probably took Sanchez no more than 10 milliseconds to put his lethal ASTANA squad on the front (with BORA) to absolutely Drill the pace when he knew that Roglic was on the floor....
While I still think that Roglic had to win the stage yesterday given the tactical reality that ruthlessness cuts both ways. JV might need a few lessons on Peloton politics and making alliances because when they REALLY NEEDED Help today Roglic was met with a stony silence, no gifts and few friends....
So while Roglic is obviously an exceptional rider on an amazing Team, perhaps they might remember that in the peloton- like in every workplace- super talented people may need to pay more attention to whose toes they step on and try to make a few more friends as they go to the top.
Just something to think about... What a day of racing!!
Gold standard...except for the FUCKING SPOILER IN THE THUMBNAIL. That's a complete amateur move.
Allowing your competitor to win is an insult to them
Rip gino. You was a great rider. Hope you can look Down now with peace in your soul❤️
"Where have we seen that before?" Prophetic...
Roglic gets paid to win races, not to give gifts. Sure I think everybody would’ve loved if Mäder won, but I’m sure he’ll come back stronger and grow as a cyclist.
He's already won the race, he could have given the young kid the stage. It just wasn't good sportsmanship that will be remembered for the wrong reasons.
@@donalmahon nows he has won 3 of the stages of Paris Nice and winning the GC which hasnt been done in years
@@donalmahon He has to go for the win, there's bonus seconds, uci points and psychological advantage against GC competitors at hand. If he had been in a two man break taking turns , then perhaps a thank you at the end could have happened, but this wasn't the scenario.
@@donalmahon lmao mate, this isn't a d grade club crit. Racing was never the nicest game, part of Roglic's job is to provide value for his sponsors, the publicity of a win like this is invaluable. How was this finish different to a breakaway being caught just before a sprint finish, where the sprinters have fresh legs and the riders caught don't?
@wouter spot on. Nothings for free in this sport
That Roglic dialogue cracked me up
Rog is an absolutely unparalleled machine, in races like this he can literally pick and choose whether he wants to take a stage. Great highlights from LR as always
I'm surprised the roglic didn't attack further out and win by more, I guess only needed to defend his lead
He gained 11 seconds on Schachman, I am not sure if with any other strategy he would have achieved this.
Mader ending in 2nd place, between him and Schachman was ideal for him.
After such a crazy cycling day we demand a special episode!
Pay back was coming
@@tobiasuretheworld1434 payback for what? You cannot be serious if you mean taking the yesterday’s win by Roglic
Gino always in my heart ...
RIP little star 😥
Continue to love love the coverage, and awesome you are now able to license the footage. Frankly LR provides far better coverage and commentary than official channels and established professional media both. Wonder if it's just a matter of time . . . LR is the future of cycling commentary, and certainly better when not censored or edited by some organization or other as to what can be said. 🙂
The other teams weren't pacing for the stage win. They wanted to secure their places at GC. Jumbo didn't need to bring the break back to one minute before the climb. Guys like Schachmann without strong tream mates at the climb would have to ride at the front at the climb to bring back the break to 30 seconds to secure the second place. I don't know how important a second place is at Paris-Nice, but normally teams don't throw that away.
I remembered this incident but I didn’t know it was Gino. Now knowing it is, I came back to post my respects and this racing is how I will remember Gino - sometimes the effort is greater than the victory itself!
3:52 hahahaha
I really don’t understand this hate for Roglic taking the win. This is sport! What a strange culture cycling has if fans see Roglic as greedy. That would make Rodger Federer or Tiger Woods greedy for all the tiles they won.
Without Pogacar no one can stop Roglic, not even Ineos. Roglic in this Paris-Nice is just like TEAM SKY with Froome in the past TdF.
LOL you should watch today’s stage. Might change your mind 🤭
I think Roglic is as strong as Froome was, but this Jumbo especially without Kuss, De Plus and Martin (sad crash) isnt nearly as dominant as Sky.
Roglic has never won a World Tour race in France, very unstoppable indeed
Will the be a video on today's tirreno adriatico stage? It was absolutely fantastic!
RIP Gino Maeder and you will always be remembered as a young rising star of cycling.
Roglic is winning the tour this year. He's looking incredible this year.
A lot can still happen between now and then. I do hope to see it too though but crashes, injuries can change things

@@tomtanner1377ist das dein Ernst?
It is stupid to criticize Roglic for winning. That is his JOB. "Giving" away a win is ok if the GC rider benefited from the work of another non-GC rider. Roglic got nothing from the nobody and did EXACTLY what he should have done, beat him.

Is Gino Mäder going to be his season's Marc Hirschi or Jérôme Cousin? I would be so excited to see him join that hard fought break away team. Doing a Hirschi is one in a million, but one day Mäder will hit the jackpot
R.I.P now its end🙏
ROGLA TIME BABY
Possible that DSM/Bora etc. were told off by their DSs for not getting someone into the breakaway, so told to ride hard on the front to bring it back (even though that doesn't change much for their chances with Roglic there?)
Tirreno-Adriatico had a banging stage too
Paul Sherwen would be proud of this young man. Cycling commentary at its best.

Literally the best snow of the last 30 years and we kept all the resorts closed. Pretty sad.

If it had been his teammate, maybe, just maybe there would have been an argument, but it wasnt. Its his job to try to win for his team.
How many times did Roglic let Pogacar get mountain to bonus seconds or get bonus seconds through stage wins at the 2020 tour? Roglic was taking the longer view of it's more important to conserve energy for the entire race than spend energy going for bonus seconds. I think after the tour Roglic is done giving 'gifts' or second to anyone at any point in a stage race.
How was the win involved? The guy only came in third.
Who watching this when roglic just lost.
Feel bad for him
Love the clip of Rog at 03:54
Maybe HEARTBREAKAWAY would be a good word to describe stage finishes like this ;-)
R.I.P Gino
👑🚫🧢
You not doing tirreno?
LR and Benji are covering Tirreno on the LRCP 😊
No Roglic again is the stronger finisher, Mader should know how it works by now if he goes that early then you should expect to get pulled back and possibly over run in the last few meters. This is a race go back as far as Andy Shelck and Alberto Contador when Andys chain came off, should he wait No of course not they all signed up knowing at some point the stronger rider will win.
Contador was hugely (and rightly) criticised for that behaviour, just as Ullrich was commended for waiting for Armstrong when a spectator knocked him off on Luz Ardiden. Cycling is a sportsmanlike sport. You don't attack mechanicals, crashes, or in the feedzone.
@@AdiGaskell that's bullshit of the highest order there
I think it would've been really cool to see, but I can't fault him at all for going for it.
sorry, im new to competitive cycling, why would someone be criticized for trying to win?
People always love an underdog story, the new upcoming guy who made a great effort and in the end win and it would have been the case if Madder kept the effort and win on his own. But in this case he was out of legs but people still wanted him to somehow win so the only way that this could have happened was by Roglic just handing him the win and that’s just crazy. You race to win, sometimes teammates give the win to the other teammates when they get to the finish line together but Mader was in a whole different team. So, the short answer: Roglic shouldn’t be criticized for this win.
what really happened was Rog found out that Pog had just won in Terreno. Ron didn't want him to have the biggest headline of the day!
(Almost, except this happened first)😂
Why was Sam Bennett out front for a bit?
Look,a disc brake bike wins.Where is Durianrider?😉
Gotta get those watts up only a fool would expect gifts in a professional sport.
Steal? Give me a break… I am Swiss and would have loved for Mader to win but we are not the Red Cross here.. Roglic did his job. And he did it well. Period.
Hollar paddy, g’gih go’head’do
Gifting that stage is not really relevant. That's something you do when you were in a break and worked together
Skiing? Surely not! Do you even know what snow is? It's cold, like proper cold - not what Aussies think is cold :-D
Do you think the other teams worked to close the gap to get more UCI-points, even when they are 99% sure, they not gonna win.
Impressive Roglic
RIP Gino
Sure, I get the sentiment of a veteran pro offering an opportunity to an up and comer as a gesture of generosity. Yet in these circumstances, Primoz has had an awful season, following on closely from his disappointment of losing the TdF on the final day of serious racing. So for me, it makes sense that he was not in the mood for token gestures or acts of generosity.
I remember when Armstrong gifted a win to Pantini. Gifting wins never goes well. Riders should always go for the win.
Armstrong gifting the win was an alpha move and messed with Pantani's head
@@LanterneRougeCycling it was the three foot long lines of booger sugar that really messed up Elafantino's bonce.
why is the breakaway so important?
If Roglic was at Tirreno to lead out and (finally) work a bit for Van Aert none of this would’ve happened.
/s
are u kidding?
umm... its a race!!!
I can see why Bora chased, they could have lost second place if they give up a minute on gc for Cattaneo etc. TJV could drop a minute no problem. Why DSM chased is anyones guess
If they were riding up front together and working hard then you could see Roglic “consider” gifting it but otherwise no way. This is bike racing.
