Primož Roglič "STEALS" Victory from Young Gino Mäder at Paris-Nice Stage 7 2021 | Huge Controversy

  • Stage 7 of Paris-Nice 2021 had a revised route but the same finish up to La Colmiane, a climb that suited Roglic, already the leader on GC. A large breakaway group formed, including young swiss rider Gino Mader, but some strange decisions in the group behind meant this would turn out to be a very controversial finish.

    I doubt roglic was even thinking about Mäder getting his first win when he attacked. He was working to hard to think anything. He was told on the radio to go so he went, that's it. The NBC reporters made Roglic sound like a villain but that's just not the case.

    This is now the gold standard of cycling commentary on the net...
    Gifting a win would have made more sense if the kid was pacing Roglic up the climb or was doing a lot of work with him in a small group.
    In THAT situation if Roglic- as a big champion- gifts the win to the kid it's an immediate sign of respect and gratitude to a job well done... That makes sense...
    This is different.
    Gifting the win because its the popular thing to do is not going to wash well with the team or the sponsors or your GC position if the 10 second time bonus becomes important...
    Also Roglic TRIED to slacken off the pace as you showed, but when Schachman and co came up in the last K his hand was forced and he HAD to go for the stage...
    So while we all feel bad for the kid, he is a pro riding with the big boys and this is part of the game. If he wants revenge, then he should plan to pull a Pogacar and beat Roglic on the road...
    So yeah, pity for Mader, but Roglic did his job.

    • @dabeste6163
      @dabeste6163 3 роки тому +9

      I agree 100%.
      If they were in the same group, and Mäder did a lot of pacing for Roglic, he probably should have "gifted" him the stage win.
      But in this situtation, why shouldn't Roglic go for it?
      Anyways, Mäder is still young, it wont take long for him to get his first of many victories.
      I only wonder if he got surprised by Roglic, or he simply didn't have anything left in the tank.

    • @doctornrsfnly
      @doctornrsfnly 3 роки тому +12

      @@dabeste6163 I think both and also the kid was a bit frustrated...But fair play to him, he was a pro about it on Twitter and he will live to fight another day....

    • @doctornrsfnly
      @doctornrsfnly 3 роки тому

      @@chrispyy606060606 For sure Roglic HAD to win the stage yesterday and he rode like a pro...
      Yesterday Chris Horner made a very pro, very nuanced observation that LuLu Sanchez was NOT impressed when George Bennett came over the top of him to set a higher pace in the run up to yesterday's finish. It was a super observation that us non-pros would easily have missed.
      Horner made the point that as a highly respected and deeply experienced road captain Sanchez was none too pleased by Bennett showing him up in his enthusiasm to up the pace. Bennet could have let LuLu do his thing for a k or so and then quietly upped the pace in a way that did not show the man up for riding slowly....
      Bennett didn't do that and Horner noticed that it made Sanchez look bad in the peloton yesterday Fast forward 24hrs till today and it probably took Sanchez no more than 10 milliseconds to put his lethal ASTANA squad on the front (with BORA) to absolutely Drill the pace when he knew that Roglic was on the floor....
      While I still think that Roglic had to win the stage yesterday given the tactical reality that ruthlessness cuts both ways. JV might need a few lessons on Peloton politics and making alliances because when they REALLY NEEDED Help today Roglic was met with a stony silence, no gifts and few friends....
      So while Roglic is obviously an exceptional rider on an amazing Team, perhaps they might remember that in the peloton- like in every workplace- super talented people may need to pay more attention to whose toes they step on and try to make a few more friends as they go to the top.
      Just something to think about... What a day of racing!!

    The other teams weren't pacing for the stage win. They wanted to secure their places at GC. Jumbo didn't need to bring the break back to one minute before the climb. Guys like Schachmann without strong tream mates at the climb would have to ride at the front at the climb to bring back the break to 30 seconds to secure the second place. I don't know how important a second place is at Paris-Nice, but normally teams don't throw that away.

Roglic was taking the longer view of it's more important to conserve energy for the entire race than spend energy going for bonus seconds. People always love an underdog story, the new upcoming guy who made a great effort and in the end win and it would have been the case if Madder kept the effort and win on his own. But in this case he was out of legs but people still wanted him to somehow win so the only way that this could have happened was by Roglic just handing him the win and that’s just crazy. You race to win, sometimes teammates give the win to the other teammates when they get to the finish line together but Mader was in a whole different team. So, the short answer: Roglic shouldn’t be criticized for this win.

    what really happened was Rog found out that Pog had just won in Terreno. Ron didn't want him to have the biggest headline of the day!

    Steal? Give me a break… I am Swiss and would have loved for Mader to win but we are not the Red Cross here.. Roglic did his job. And he did it well. Period.

    Gifting that stage is not really relevant. That's something you do when you were in a break and worked together

    Do you think the other teams worked to close the gap to get more UCI-points, even when they are 99% sure, they not gonna win.

    Sure, I get the sentiment of a veteran pro offering an opportunity to an up and comer as a gesture of generosity. Yet in these circumstances, Primoz has had an awful season, following on closely from his disappointment of losing the TdF on the final day of serious racing. So for me, it makes sense that he was not in the mood for token gestures or acts of generosity.

    I remember when Armstrong gifted a win to Pantini. Gifting wins never goes well. Riders should always go for the win.

      Armstrong gifting the win was an alpha move and messed with Pantani's head

    If Roglic was at Tirreno to lead out and (finally) work a bit for Van Aert none of this would’ve happened.

    I can see why Bora chased, they could have lost second place if they give up a minute on gc for Cattaneo etc. TJV could drop a minute no problem. Why DSM chased is anyones guess

    If they were riding up front together and working hard then you could see Roglic “consider” gifting it but otherwise no way. This is bike racing.
