Beautiful fencing Martin. I'll never stop being amazed at just how clean sidesword fencing is even at the highest level compared to other weapons which end up in a twitchy reflexive mess, or at the very least look nothing like the style the books describe.
Well yes and no, but the ones that didn’t pay much attention to not getting hit did not perform well in the pools and therefore didn't make it to the finals.^^ Overall the participants were very happy and we are actually seeing a few events now adapting this ruleset. :)
If you want to spar with metal swords, I'd always go with the full kit: mask, gloves, jacket, hard shin / knee / elbow protection, trousers. If you leave anything out on a regular basis then you will develop certain bad habits around it.
The "Now I can't lose!" mindset is pretty pervasive. Back when I played World of Tanks regularly I used a mod that would pull up players' stats and calculate a statistical probability for each side to win or lose the battle. A lot of players used the same mod, and aside from the usual unsportsmanlike behavior (quitting out of the battle because their team had too low a probability to win for their taste) I found that teams that had very high probabilities to win actually tended to lose more than they ought to. Aside from the conceptual flaws in the model, this often happened because players on the winning team suddenly "lost their edge" and started doing pants-on-head stupid things that tended to get them killed. The pattern is so pervasive, in fact, that one channel has an entire series called "Game Of Throws" dedicated to teams in World of Warships taking a game that's basically won and turning it into a loss.
The thing is, this tournament's ruleset was such that each fight consists of 5 exchanges, and the fighter with more unharmed exchanges wins. Scores from the landed blows only matter if the two fighters have an equal number of unharmed exchanges. If you get to three unharmed exchanges, you have won. There is literally 0% chance of losing anymore.

Great exchange, specially in both finals :) and you really channeled the manciolino spirit with those flourishes!
Thank you mate!
Awesome and intense fencing! Congrats on the win man!
Thanks a lot :D those fights were pretty nerve wracking tbh :D
I love the idea of giving finishing an exchange unharmed priority in scoring. Cool ruleset, and congratulations on your win.
Thank you very much 😊
Beautiful bouts for a tournament. I love the intensity while striving to not getting hit!
Thank you very much, I am very pleased with the ruleset as well^^
Thank you for the hit markers, they make this far easier to watch. :D
You're welcome :D yeah, I was really impressed by the judging quality to be honest as they just had the one go in full speed^^

Thank you very much! I think that's highly dependent on the practitioners though^^
This is great!
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it!
What a fun way to count points. What was the experience of the participants? Did they fight differently than usual?

This is intriguing swordplay.
For beginners who wish to spar with metal blunts, what minimum safety equipment would you recommend, and what sellers?
If you want to spar with metal swords, I'd always go with the full kit: mask, gloves, jacket, hard shin / knee / elbow protection, trousers. If you leave anything out on a regular basis then you will develop certain bad habits around it.
If it needs to be light (mask & light gloves), then I would go for foam swords.
Are cups (groin protection) a major concern generally?
@@ianyoung6706 yes, they are and I forgot them in my list 🙈
@@SchildwachePotsdam copy that, thank you sir.
cool.
Thank you ❤
