Yesterday- simple project, in and out.
Today- Well, there goes my Sunday.
J.Solid, You did it " THE RIGHT WAY " did not take the easy road. Now you can clean up all the rust, crap in there " EVERY WHERE " from taking the dash out & primer it a few times. Clean up what ever you can, check " EVERYTHING " while the dash is out, wiring, bulbs, speakers, gauges, ect... VERY SMART TO DO IT THIS WAY BUT SUCH A PITA. The thing is NOW YOU KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE BY DOING THIS, A+ SIR, A+.
Sometimes you frustrate me AS I DO OTHER'S, LOL BUT THIS TIME GREAT JOB & AS YOUR CHANNEL IS CALLED IT'S " JEEP SOLID " NOW. Henry froom PA. living in the old RUST BELT HERE SUCKS.
Thank you!
Had no idea the glove box came out like that on my YJ… extremely helpful since I only need to change passenger side!! THANKS!!
I've had fun watching you work through this on your Wed. Coffee live stream. too. You do a great job breaking down the details of the job and getting it done.
Thanks! What a pain. LOL 🤣
Thank you very much for the instructions it has been very useful for my project YJ 94, excellent explanation in all your videos
Wanted to take those bottom screws out to put my roof rack on - quickly realized I was out of my element and took it to a jeep shop where they got em out for 60 bucks. WORTH
I used a welder and nuts to remove all my old hinges. Good video, love the channel.
Going through this pain now
I agree with drilling, but I'd use rivnuts to replace the standard nut
When I did this project on mine, I used a Dremel tool. Small enough to get in there and remove the Seam Sealer easily. Takes a bit to cut off old bolts, but patience is key
Good idea
@@JeepSolid Dale , Harbor Freight has a cheap needle scaler that will clean up that sealer fast.
Good time to clean up and refurbish all the dash parts before you put them back on and boy will it look good when you are finished.
I feel so lucky that my YJ doesn't have that seam sealer.
Good info
you can counter sink bit drill the holes to match the screw shoulder to the brackets. just take your time to counter sink until the screw flush with the bracket surface.
I just changed mine out on my CJ-5 with no issues. But I have new hinges for my YJ. That one has a broken bolt in it. I don't think I'm going to get lucky twice... LOL.
I just did mine, too. Only passenger side, though. It broke completely in half. Wish I had been warned that putting the windshield down might break the hinges. I thought they were just tight, but I was actually bending the metal brackets as I lowered it. It was a job getting that sealer off the nuts. I had a little success with heat, a sharpened screwdriver and a dental pick to pull it away.
This is in my future. Been living with a broken hinge too long.
Weld the nuts or riv nuts maybe would help? I may try if I ever do this on my YJ.
Now is the time to change your dash speakers!
Yeah. Probably
looking like miklo- vatos locos 4ever!!
I had to give up on mine. I need to drill them. They either spin in place (solvable like you did) or were solidly rusted; after stripping a couple and snapping three T40s I quit.
The method I’ve used on other Jeeps is to weld on a 7/16 nut -the combination of heat and using a stronger socket gets them to come out and I need to drill or do that with mine.
I need a solid day to do it and get stuff painted well
I’m confused why rugged ridge is described as ‘nice’ considering they are such a thin gage. At least the ones I’ve seen.
Just replaced my cowling seal. Never lowering my windshield ever again.
Yeah. What a pain, huh
I drilled out the bolts and installed rivet nuts so I don't have to worry about tearing into the dash. Cuts out hours of work.
Awesome! I wanted to remove the hinges when I repainted my Jeep but did not! I hope you took care of all the rust under the dash....
Will do
The Rugged Ridge hinges at your link actually say they are NOT counter sunk. Where did you find yours? I can’t find counter sunk after market anywhere.
I ordered the full rugged ridge door hinge kit with body hindges. Oddly enough the upper door hinge doesn't fit into the windshield hinge slide pin. Brass pin seems to large. Posting a video of this issue. Hinges dont fit factory windshield hinge either
Use a sharp blade to cut around the sealer. I work as a seam sealer and have to deal with the hard sealer occasionally. Sharp blade like a chisel or scraper works well. Little bit of heat helps too.
Yeah. I used a chisel and some heat. Fortunately the dash came apart fairly easy. Let me attack it a lot easier
I would like to apologize to you Dale, I had misunderstood you you before, I thought the windshield hinges had the nuts welded in on the inside of the body, I didn't realize that they were just held in place by the undercoating sealer. Now I understand why you took the dash apart to get at them. After seeing all that I kinda agree with other people about the idea of just drilling them out and then driving them thru with a hammer and a punch. But like you said, you still need to get the dash apart so you can install the new hardware.
Hey! No problem. Got it done and it looks good. Man that sealer was a pain
Elephant denture glue LOL .. I'm glad you finally had success getting those bolt out Dale . I DM you on IG a couple weeks ago with pictures of the bolts I use to line up a transmission for installation? Just wondering .Take care and be safe sir.
Oh man! Awful stuff
aftermarket hinges suck all.of them. I just got oem ones and installed some rivnuts
Do you think that by removing that seam sealer it could cause a water leak under the dash? Also did you end up using any special nuts for the install?
Where are you getting the replacement "bolts"
-- I am having trouble finding bolts.
-- Missing bolts leave me with guessing what the size was.
-- What size are the bolts attaching the Roll bar to the windshield?
✅
aahh i just finished this project the other day, thankfully mine was a little bit easier. Less rust, and that seem sealer crap wasnt there. Still a massive pain
Yeah. It was a huge pain. But got it done ✅
Put new speakers in too while you have access.
Smart
Have you ever focused on the leaky firewall problem YJ’s seem to have, with a real fix it solution? Not the typical cowl grill drain plug needs to be cleaned answer.
Ok... so I just removed my hinges... OH my GOD! Both arms look like I tried a tonsillectomy on a shark.
Haha! So true
@@JeepSolid Kind of a win in the end as I didn't have to drill any of the bolts out. But man...
