Sucks I never got to see them live, feels like a bucket list thing that I'll never be able to complete, even if I were to attend next year.
I agree on the Reinventing over Cowboys.. but it's such a hard thing to rank in the sea of greatness that is Pantera. Immortality Insane and Avoid the Light happen to be two if my favs. Great video! It's just too hard to rank these albums, as they just didn't make many bad songs... if any. Very subjective. I saw them once before the blew up on the Vulgar tour, at the Mirage in Minneapolis... stellar show.
Yeah I've seen em I think 5 times So hard to remember last few times I saw em cuz I was shitfaced(I've seen Tool 2 times according to my friend but I dont remember)and I've seen Down and Damage Plan once each Thier live show was so much more than a regular metal show. When they took a break between songs Phil would talk to the us. Sometimes they would throw swag beer at us. Once they turned the lights onto the pit and played suicide note pt 2 in darkness. Another time they brought Jason Newstead up and they played Metallica songs. There will never be another band like them.
I remember back in the days when I was 14 and MTV was good, I would stay up late and secretely turn on the television to watch the metal videos (I just started playing electric guitar) and when I first saw the video to Mouth for War it blew my mind. Still one of my favorite songs almost 25 years later.
Vinnie Paul was as good a drummer as Dimebag was a guitarist. He was so incredibly precise. Everything was where it had to be, no blast beats and most of all he didn’t abuse the double bass
The Great Southern Trendkill is by far my favorite album. That album just has so much fire behind it. It's proof agony translates to great music. Take notes Metallica.
The evolution of Pantera is funny. Most bands have a banging start and they start to get "less good" after 3 or 4 albums, while Pantera was just getting warmed up in that time. Which also shows their persistence and drive to be something else from what already was, but also kept them grounded by not taking success for granted.
I’ve always really loved The Great Southern Trendkill. That said, everything from Cowboys from Hell on is at least very good. Far Beyond Driven is my personal favorite.
Weird, I’ve been watching Pantera videos all morning. Really looking forward to this one!! The Sleep is suuuuper slept on (no pun intended) The high notes Dime hits in the solo give me goosebumps every time
Yeah and rolling stone top 100 metal songs didn't have a single Pantera which is completely ridiculous. It's been argued that Pantera brought metal back from the dead and I was there during that time. And they certainly breathed new life into metal. RIP Vinnie and Dime
The first four records are essential to understand their journey , also the developping musical options . The thing you like only hardcore metal and skip a song once its more melodic or more deeper doesn't mean that suck .
So happy someone finally mentioned how damn heavy and amazing ''slaughtered'' is. I remember being 9 years old digging through my older brothers CD collection just to listen to that album and slaughtered in particular. Always thought I just consider it so good because of nostalgia. love your second account deep dives! Best regards from Germany
It’s weird because there are distinct phases. The pre-CFH, peak, and post FBD. It took me a long time to appreciate Great Southern Trendkill but I loved Reinventing the Steel right off the shelf. Great video! Also worth mentioning- Trendkill was them at their most messed up. IIRR, Phil didn’t even leave New Orleans to record vocals because he was so strung out and ashamed. Reinventing the Steel was supposed to be them with all of their issues worked out which worked until it didn’t.
I had the Power Metal Phil haircut in middle school . An d I was "so cool lol " I had the Snake Sabo from Skid Row nose chain from my nostril to the ear for like 5 days until the principal made me take it out because it was "a distraction to others" lol .
I was in college when FBD came out. Loved Pantera, Danzig, and all the great Thrash stuff from the 80s and early 90s. Me and my friend Brian went to the record store the day this album came out and we both purchased the CD. We get into his car and put it in right away. When the 1st song started playing and it opened with that short guitar riff and blasted into the utter hardcore fast song that it is, he and I immediately looked at each other and burst into laughter. Not because of the song being funny or bad or anything, but how utterly awesome it was and the ballsy decision to open an album with that song. An album that followed Vulgar Display of Power, which was an enormous breakthrough for them
@@jabberdouche Nice I am just wondering cause I am in college right now and love old school thrash and crossover……Unfortunately literally no other college today does….I bet back then more college people did..lol
My favorite album is The Great Southern Trend Kill. I don’t hear that from many Pantera fans for some reason. I think it has the most in your face hardcore sound out of them all.
For me both Cowboys & Vulgar Display are no-skip albums. Also speaking of no-skip albums for me The Jester Race/Whoracle/Colony/Clayman by In Flames fit the bill perfectly, along with Rust in Peace by Megadeth, ...'Justice by Metallica, Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park, and Holographic Universe by Scar Symmetry to name a few.
I used to love Jester Race and Colony etc when I was 16 but nowadays I can't really listen to those albums, I don't think In Flames held up all that well with time compared with other bands from that same time. Dark Tranquillity, Sentenced, Amorphis, At The Gates all aged much better I think. The first Haunted album as well is stupidly good.
Now, we need a video on "No skip albums". I completely agree about "Appetite" being "the tits". I've loved it since 1988. I saw them open for Aerosmith, and they blew Aerosmith out of the water. Just damn epic.
1. Cowboys From Hell (1990) 2. Vulgar Display of Power (1992) 3. The Great Southern Trendkill (1996) 4. Far Beyond Driven (1994) 5. Reinventing The Steel (2000) 6. Power Metal (1988) 7. I Am The Night (1985) 8. Projects In The Jungle (1984) 9. Metal Magic (1983)
A quick story on why reinventing the steel sounds that way: When the band sat down to record this record they came to the table with I believe 3 songs each from their discography that was their favourites. Also anselmo wanted to more anthemic style vocals not for radio play. Also I’ll cast a shadow was about the impact they left on the metal scene in the 10 years they were popular and the impact they’ll leave
I have been watching your channel for awhile but this is the video that made me subscribe. I am a guitar player and HUGE Pantera fan! I knew you would pick Vulgar Display for best but I am torn between that and Far Beyond. The only thing we disagree on is Cemetery Gates. Great video, keep it up!
I love those songs where they dropped the rhythm guitar for the solo, because those are the ones where I can hear exactly what REX is playing. He was amazing, sometimes matching the drums, sometimes the guitar, and sometimes matching none.
I actually think RTS is kinda my favorite Pantera album. It's heavy as a lead shit, but grooves and just pumps at a very solid pace the whole way through.
Dropping the rhythm guitars in the solo is Dime repping early Van Halen. The early VH records which he and Vinnie were heavily influenced by had Eddie panned hard left and the bass on the right with Ed (pretty much) doing everything without overdubs.
Honestly they sounded fine in the 80s, like they just sounded like your average 80s glam rock band so not sure why the hate it is what it is. Was a different time and that was the music of that time, also don't understand why you dislike the slower shit, not every song has to be trash metal 😂
Always just assumed 'F-ing Hostile' was their most popular song, but realizing now that I had a good friend (metal/hardcore) who played me (punk) music he knew I would like.
I saw Pantera 16 times. My favorite album is Great Southern Trendkill. It was also their best tour with White Zombie. Great Southern Trendkill was years ahead of its time. As a comparison, Metallica had just released Load. LoL
Trendkill is ahead of its time. I'd been a huge fan of Pantera from Cowboys on, and thought Trendkill sucked when it came out. Fast forward 25 later it's my favorite Pantera album.
Your insane every song on Cowboys are exquisite!!! Yes we do need 6 minutes of the Sleep!!! The solo on the Sleep is unbelievable!!! Whatever you are totally one of those people that don't like any songs that are slow!! I do agree Vulgar is their best!!! That is when they were at their best!
Lets get real now: Live 101 Proof is their best record. I know it doesn't count, becaus it's basically a best off, but there' no better introduction to their music, plus it has two great exclusive songs, one of which is arguably their best track imo.
TGSTK is their strongest album start to finish, in my opinion. I love that record. FBD has my favorite sound of all their records, and Becoming, 5 Minutes Alone, and Strength Beyond Strength are my favorite Pantera songs. The live version of Cemetery Gates on the 101 Proof is superior to the original album version. It's so Pantera. I just love the shit out of it.
I honestly don’t agree with Finn’s takes sometimes. I really hate when band just focus on “heaviness”. I love when bands are able to play between clean and heavy. It makes it darker, emotive, and more intense.
I politely disagree, and it’s probably because I really got into them when Far beyond driven came out. However, I first got into them via their home videos haha. Anyway, I love cowboys and vulgar but I have really come to appreciate reinventing the steel. Tracks like ‘it makes them disappear,’ ‘I’ll cast a shadow,’ and ‘yesterday don’t mean shit’ are so under rated.
Agreed it wasn't til recently I actually paid close attention to that album and I've gotta say some of the riffs on that album are top fuckin notch. Grew up on all the pantera albums but this one got the least amount of play til recently
@@joshmclaughlin2488 I think the last two tracks on the album are some of my favourite Pantera songs. It's a shame it all came to an end. However, with this new tour I'm sure it will give a new generation the chance to know more about the band.
Totally agree with you on this "worst to best". I'm learning guitar from a bunch of months and my teacher tells me to learn "mouth for war". This gave me the opportunity to realize how talented was Dimebag. Yes, of course to me he already was one of the greatest guitarist ever, but now I know WHY. His riffs and songwriting skills was the best of the best. SImplicity + a ton of groove. He literally shaped the entire modern metal guitar.

CHF is great but the other 4 albums are untouchable in my mind. The sound on those albums is one of my favorite things that's ever existed musically.
FBD worst! Are you insane?
@@TheRemulosEpsolonProgramme 🤦♂️
But Cowboys is just so clean sounding. The production is amazing!
Yeah I've seen em I think 5 times
So hard to remember last few times I saw em cuz I was shitfaced(I've seen Tool 2 times according to my friend but I dont remember)and I've seen Down and Damage Plan once each
Thier live show was so much more than a regular metal show.
He did blast beats once, on use my third arm, and its fucking sick
The Great Southern Trendkill is definitely Pantera's best album. I'd fight anyone to death about it.
Hell yeah, Floods all day.
It's really a toss up for me, either Trendkill or FBD, I really can't choose one over the other.
Epic for sure.👌😎✨
Lmao...stand ur ground
best riffs for sure. I think the only thing about that album is Phils vocals aren't good. other than that, best.
The Great Southern Trendkill is by far my favorite album. That album just has so much fire behind it. It's proof agony translates to great music. Take notes Metallica.
i agree totally
Me too, it’s also the most underrated. I think it’s the most hardcore album out of their entire discography. TGSTK is my favorite album for sure.
I don't think Metallica sweats it too much. They literally have albums that have outsold Pantera's entire discography.
meh.. not many song here that are actually good. First two albums are easily the best
So Glad you did this Ranking, My Two Personal Favorite Albums here were Cowboys From Hell and Vulgar Display of Power.
This is 29 minutes of Finn having an opinion.
A very foolish and inaccurate one.
The evolution of Pantera is funny. Most bands have a banging start and they start to get "less good" after 3 or 4 albums, while Pantera was just getting warmed up in that time. Which also shows their persistence and drive to be something else from what already was, but also kept them grounded by not taking success for granted.
**cough** Metallica **cough**
I’ve always really loved The Great Southern Trendkill. That said, everything from Cowboys from Hell on is at least very good. Far Beyond Driven is my personal favorite.
I agree 100% with this list! VULGAR is one of the best metal albums of all time but I have to say, "Slaughtered" from FBD is BRUTAL!!!
Weird, I’ve been watching Pantera videos all morning. Really looking forward to this one!! The Sleep is suuuuper slept on (no pun intended) The high notes Dime hits in the solo give me goosebumps every time
Ha same I’ve been on a binge this weekend. Hella excited to see them next year!! 🤟🏻
@@lisalove991 Same! I was only 6 when we lost Dime, this is the closest I’m gonna get to seeing them most likely.
The Great Southern Trendkill is a masterpiece. Easily my favourite of theirs
Great video Finn! Far Beyond Driven still hits so hard to this day, Pantera we’re really on another level.
'Ride My Rocket' has big Detroit Rock City energy. Makes sense knowing the Abbott brothers loved KISS
Definitely gonna jam Pantera now. Dime was the reason I picked up my chops on guitar.
"It's fine" about Revolution Is My Name blows my mind. That's damn near my fave Pantera song.
Whenever I see someone asking "what is the heaviest riff?", I always answer Slaughtered! I think it's heavy as eff!!
I remember reading in a magazine a long long time ago that the song "Floods" was ranked as one of Dime's best solos
It's amazing as well as the lyrics.
An album that followed Vulgar Display of Power, which was an enormous breakthrough for them
You went to college and listened to thrash metal??
@@kalebseiler8577 you betcha! Even better, hardcore, punk, crossover like Septic Death, Accüsed, G.B.H. etc.
And, to top it off, I graduated
@@jabberdouche Nice I am just wondering cause I am in college right now and love old school thrash and crossover……Unfortunately literally no other college today does….I bet back then more college people did..lol
My favorite album is The Great Southern Trend Kill. I don’t hear that from many Pantera fans for some reason. I think it has the most in your face hardcore sound out of them all.
Thank you so much for uploading almost daily Finn these videos are the highlight of my day. It’s better than classic mtv
Power Metal is if Judas Priest and Queensryche got together to do a Thrash album.
Linkin Park is mega gay.
Far Beyond Driven is a no skipper too, skipper.
Primal Concrete Sledge. People love Cemetery Gates because of the call and response dive bombs and screams at the end.
Now, we need a video on "No skip albums". I completely agree about "Appetite" being "the tits". I've loved it since 1988. I saw them open for Aerosmith, and they blew Aerosmith out of the water. Just damn epic.
Back in Black is a perfect "no skip" album.
Led Zeppelin 2
Appetite is the most overrated and overplayed ad nauseum migraine waiting to happen, and it all went down hill from there.
@@sassydoe9407 I think their career peaked with Appetite.
1. Cowboys From Hell (1990)
2. Vulgar Display of Power (1992)
3. The Great Southern Trendkill (1996)
4. Far Beyond Driven (1994)
5. Reinventing The Steel (2000)
6. Power Metal (1988)
7. I Am The Night (1985)
8. Projects In The Jungle (1984)
9. Metal Magic (1983)
You gotta read Rex Browns book man. Fills ya in quite a bit. Especially for Reinventing the steel. They were broken at that time.
That floods outro is probably, top 5, best melodic solos ever
What's really cool about cemetery gates is at the ending when Dimebag and Phil are matching each other's pitches.
Dude cowboys from tell album has no clunkers!!! I can't believe you don't like medicine man or the sleep that much! The sleep solo is incredible!
A quick story on why reinventing the steel sounds that way:
When the band sat down to record this record they came to the table with I believe 3 songs each from their discography that was their favourites. Also anselmo wanted to more anthemic style vocals not for radio play. Also I’ll cast a shadow was about the impact they left on the metal scene in the 10 years they were popular and the impact they’ll leave
It's over Finn's head.
My top 3 favorite Pantera albums are as follows:
3. Cowboys From Hell
2. Far Beyond Driven
1. Vulgar Display Of Power
Agreed 👍
I love those songs where they dropped the rhythm guitar for the solo, because those are the ones where I can hear exactly what REX is playing. He was amazing, sometimes matching the drums, sometimes the guitar, and sometimes matching none.
I love them all (even the first four). I have to put Trendkill as my hands down number one. So heavy, and so dark.
“25 Years” is and always will be my favorite Pantera song.. such a sleeper
Trendkill for me. Not as many anthems as Vulger or FBD but I legit thinks it's the most solid overall.
I actually think RTS is kinda my favorite Pantera album. It's heavy as a lead shit, but grooves and just pumps at a very solid pace the whole way through.
Reinventing the steel was my introduction to Pantera and they're one of my favorite bands of all time every song on that album is a banger imo
Speaking of ‘no skip’ albums, Rust In Peace is definitely one to mention…
I think Ola Englund could do a good job on guitar, he's always nailing Pantera riffs and covers 🤘🏼
Dropping the rhythm guitars in the solo is Dime repping early Van Halen. The early VH records which he and Vinnie were heavily influenced by had Eddie panned hard left and the bass on the right with Ed (pretty much) doing everything without overdubs.
Man great southern trendkill is my absolute favorite album by them. Every song is just killer.
1. Vulgar Display of Power
2. Cowboys from Hell
3. Reinventing the Steel
4. The Great Southern Trendkill
5. Far Beyond Driven
The Sleep has an awesome guitar solo (or 2 depending on how you look at it)!
Trendkill: HEAVIEST
Far Beyond Driven: TIGHTEST
Cowboys From Hell: MOST ICONIC
Vulgar Display Of Power: OVERALL BEST
Your insane every song on Cowboys are exquisite!!! Yes we do need 6 minutes of the Sleep!!! The solo on the Sleep is unbelievable!!! Whatever you are totally one of those people that don't like any songs that are slow!! I do agree Vulgar is their best!!! That is when they were at their best!
The solo in floods is a tear jerker
"The Sleep" is a 10/10 song with Dimebag's BEST solo.
Even their 80’s stuff rocked actually
Lets get real now: Live 101 Proof is their best record. I know it doesn't count, becaus it's basically a best off, but there' no better introduction to their music, plus it has two great exclusive songs, one of which is arguably their best track imo.
Thanks man been wanting to get into Pantera this helped alot 👍
Cowboys from Hell is number 1 for me but do more of these album ranking videos they’re fun to talk about!
Like it or not, Walk is a nu-metal song. Inspired bands that came after them.
Shedding Skin is my shit too
I honestly don’t agree with Finn’s takes sometimes. I really hate when band just focus on “heaviness”. I love when bands are able to play between clean and heavy. It makes it darker, emotive, and more intense.
"Over and Out" is an amazing song in my opinion.
My ranking, i'm not including "glamtera"
1. Vulgar Display
2. Trendkill
3. Cowboys
4. Far Beyond
5. Reinventing
I saw “Pantera” (without the Abbot Brothers) yesterday and they still were awesome
Of course they were 🥊💪
I always loved Power Metal. Also, I've got Projects in the Jungle on vinyl. The Great Southern Trendkill will always be my favorite.
yo, hatebreed and 311 have enough albums you could do an album tier list for both! i'd say the rise of brutality and sound system for my tier tops
Great southern trendkill is one the most underrated metal records of all time imo
I love Panera
Panera bread eh
@@T.Maximus vulgar display of chowder
Reinventing the meal
I'M BRIOCHE!!!!! INHERIT YOUR CARBS! I'M BRIOCHE!!!!
FACTS! no one is as good as Pantera!!!! Best band of all time! Getcha pull!!
The song mouth for war is why I think "Pantera" can still tour. The riff was written by Phil and Dime just added a little of his spice. Anybody who says they shouldnt just assume Rex and Phil were tagalongs
Great video Finn! I would love to see more deep dive videos like this from you where you do this to your favorite artists. Definitely would love to see a ADTR deep dive from you! Or even if you could do those for less known artists to get to know their discographies more.
