8 simple things i did to go from ABC to A*A*A* in one year of A Levels

  • so in my first year of A Levels I achieved grades I was fine with, but not over the moon - so i worked out how to work smarter and more efficiently to boost myself up to A*A*A*. these are the things i did!!
also, i'm not saying those grades are how you should define your own success - instead, base your understanding of success on what YOU would personally be happy with!! it's more about being happy with your own achievements because we're all different!! good luck friends :)

    1. Do extra research beyond the spec content
    2. Use your frees and work smart !
    3. Make the revision notes as early as you can, as you go along
    4. Analyse content to make sure you understand fully
    5. Make essay and question answer plans
    6. Immerse yourself in the subject when revising
    7. Contribute in class and share your ideas
    8. Condense information and then condense it again

Somehow last summer I walked out of my school on results day with A*A*A* without having revised literally AT ALL (mental health kinda took over) and upon reflection I’ve realised that it all came down to the fact that I (unknowingly and accidentally) studied really hard and smart. I drifted apart from all but two of my friends which meant that socialising in frees wasn’t really an option, so I spent every free moment in the library researching, doing homework, notes, essay plans etc., I did literally about 10 years worth of past and specimen papers and learnt the questions and mark schemes by heart, listened very intently in class to discussions (didn’t contribute unless prompted bc anxiety 🥺👉🏼👈🏼) and was constantly making pretty revision notes to fill time lol. It just takes time, practice and patience but it’s definitely attainable!

if you don't mind me asking, how did you manage to study/work hard while struggling with your mental health? i started y13 with the intention of boosting my knowledge and grades however my mental health went downhill really fast, so it's been really hard to do much at all.

Dakota Briar in my country we have 3 major exams, at the ages of 12, 16 and 18 . 12 is at the end of primary school,16 is like GCSE, 18 is like A level. however, i am not in the UK and do not use their systems, so our GCSEs (we call it O levels) and our A levels are moderated by Cambridge Assessments and its harder here than it is elsewhere :”) but a good thing is, since our papers are harder, we dont have an A* grade, and top unis usually discount an A as an A* as they know our papers are harder than international standards :)

    Here’s one.
Did you start A Levels thinking how cool it would be to go back to GCSE and see how easy they seem?
Make that happen while doing A level!
Go above and beyond, so A level seems like the bare minimum and easy! I’m working towards doing that now.
Good luck everyone and nice video Jack!

  • @henry0115

One tip I'd say which I had to get out of the habit of myself, is don't put off any topic/section of a course. It's so easy to, because you might not understand it, put off an entire chapter/page of a textbook and then just spend your time revisiting something you already know quite well. Even if you spend 5 or 10 minutes reading through something you don't understand, it will start to make sense once you keep revising it and noticing links to other relevant content! Please don't neglect parts of your syllabus, especially for GCSEs and A-Levels where you could get questioned on any of it :)

    • @sumyguck8094
      @sumyguck8094 3 роки тому +3

I found chemistry the most difficult at first, but now I've been over it a couple of times, it's a lot easier, and i even enjoy the maths when I hated maths! There's so many links, I'm like:wait, this is almost like one big topic itself! :O Instead of struggling for till it's too late, ask and go over things so you've time to process things. One of the best tips ever! :D✨

We don't have A levels in australia, but we have something similar. I will say I got one free period on wednesday afternoon. We have lessons from 9-3 all week. And we didn't have exams. We had 40% essays. So there was barely any time for breaks and socialising. As out of school hours you'd be researching for a really large essay.
I got two B- and two C+ despite getting straight As (and a few Bs) in every subject up until then.
So I wish I had seen this video then (4-5 years ago now)

However one point I would like to say is it's quite tricky within the sciences (from my experience with bio) to read beyond the course content and include it in questions because the mark schemes were so tight, and honestly harsh that it didn't cater for extra knowledge. At least with OCR. That being said I definitely agree with humanities and English etc! Xx

I worked so hard for my English A-Level but got an E , back in 2000! We were allowed to bring our texts in, thank goodness! I did past papers, extra essays, started my essays as soon as we were given them, made quote/character/theme cards and essay plans... A couple of weeks before my English lit exam, one of my teachers told me I really didn’t know how to/couldn’t write essays. Some of my classmates did their essays the night before they were due in, messy presentation and they got As, while I got B-, having spent the last couple of weeks working on it! Most people doing English Lit also did History, so I think they must have a similar mind ( analytic, able to structure a coherent argument...).

Thank you! I wish I have seen this two years ago, but the people doing A-levels during COVID do deserve your advice. I would like to add advice for people doing Art related A-levels as I boosted two numbers in a year.
    1. Do all the relevant above in Jack's video!
    2. Listen to your teacher's feedback but not their instructions of what you need to do practically. So I have taken on board from teachers that I need to make a good journey in my book. I have also started my coursework book from scratch at the start of y13, figuring out the best journey for myself without my teacher leading me from random task to task.
    3. Do what you are genuinely interested in a specific area of your subject. I found out a few weeks before my y12 mock exam that I don't have to do dark, moody art that everyone else is doing. I can use my love for finding happiness in simple things within my exam and coursework journey.
    4. Look through lots of past student coursework books - both good and bad.
    5. Look through success criteria and pick out practical things to include in your book (Analysis, good quality photos or artwork, work you dislike and improvements, contact sheets etc.)
I hope this helps. Please boost if you find it helpful as there aren't that many videos or advice like this for Art-related students - I'm a past Photography A-level student. Bear in mind there are so many hours of work in those subjects.
