CrossFit - "Killing The Fat Man: Episode 8" with Gary Roberts

  • Get ready for a svelte Gary Roberts. After two months and 24 days of CrossFit, he's down about 70 lb. to right around 203 lb.
    "I feel like worlds have gone by," Roberts says. "I just want to get more fit, more healthy, so I don't know where that final weight would be. It really doesn't matter. I'm pretty much feeling mentally unstoppable right now."
    In Episode 7 of Killing the Fat Man-called "something happened, the last month"-Roberts is clearly a new man.
    "I was offered sex two nights in a row," he reveals. "I've been hit on (by) at least eight different people in the last three days. And there was a man in there."
    In this episode, we find Roberts in Portland, visiting his father. While there, Roberts takes him to CrossFit Stumptown, where the 67-year-old tells owner and head coach Tony Edgerton that he's had triple-bypass surgery, aortic valve replacement and pacemaker implantation.
    "I don't know. I can't ... describe it, how great I feel. And I'd love for other people to feel the same way," Robert explains. "Like, I think if my wife and my daughter-if I can get them on board to kind of go through the same thing, it wouldn't feel so disconnected."

    Man...I feel like Gary has jumped the shark. Empowering yourself is only the gateway to self actualization. He's speaking of commitment to his box and WODs but dissing his commitment to his marriage, wife and daughter in the same breath.
    Brother, they are one and the same. Don't fall into the trap that a healthy body that looks good naked will cure empty emotions.

    Crossfit is a drug! You get a boost of self esteem after every WOD! I was on a downward spiral before I started Crossfit. I was almost drinking a 12 pack of beer everyday! Crossfit has given me happiness like I can't describe! I love it so much, I don't know if I'll be in my current career much longer. It's opened my eyes to every possibility because it prepares you mentally and physcially for the unknown

    I am going through the same thing with my wife. She is a nurse that just beats herself down for her hospital. She felt threatened at first. But now she is taking on the challenge to feel her best. She quit smoking, is eating better, spacing out multiple small meals, working out. It's a great thing to work on together. You can never feel too good. She went to a beginner crossfit class and is working on her strength to go back. I can't wait to see where we will be in a year.
    Thanks Crossfit!.

    This is very motivating, I am not going to lie. But personally, I feel like there is too much talking going on, too much "Oh I feel so great, I am really doing something for the first time in 8 years". I think the idea is really great, and Gary is a hard worker and he really goes to show that you can do what ever you set your mind to. Massive respect to you, Gary. I just wish it would be more cross fitting and less talking, also because I think a lot of it is just him repeating himself. I think it would have been a whole lot more interesting if they had caught him at times where he wasn't 'high' on work outs and his results. Times where he has issues with going to the gym, where he lacks motivation and spirit. I don't want to come of as sounding negative, because the basics of this series is really good, great work, his coaches are all great, the moral and effort he puts in on a daily basis is amazing.

  • @CSnipes

    I understand why he's talking about being propositioned but no husband that values his vows, his wife, and his family will get so animated and excited about a being put in a situation where infidelity could've occurred. It's a great compliment on his progress in his physical transformation, but it doesn't say much about his emotional/spiritual transformation if he's getting that pumped about bathroom sex with a stranger then bragging to his wife about it. Stay the course Gary.

    Why do I get the feeling that he is gonna try to leave his wife for someone he thinks he get have now that he lost weight? She stayed with the fat you, she could have moved on long ago. The grass is rarely greener on the other side.

    14:50 is absolutely priceless; to see Gary's father react to having accomplished something he may have given up on in his life. So brilliant to see Crossfit being scaled properly and demonstrated for everyone to see. The games are great, but to me this is what Crossfit is truly about.

    Crossfit transforms lives! Recently single. Partner left me as a result of my getting better. After coming out of a 5 yr long bout with major depression after coming down with cancer, I found CF. I was still depressed at that point, but found motivation from CF vedios.
    Watching them helped me understand that I was missing out on doing what I had been doing for most of my life: exercising! Complete and focused demands on the body that lead to self discovery. CF changed my life. So f*ck my ex.

    This episode illustrates that sometimes the ones you love are the ones who are the most discouraging. If I were to speculate, based on experiences I have heard from others who try to make a physical transformation, the biggest impediment to losing weight and getting in shape is the spouse. Wives, especially, start feeling insecure when their husbands lose weight/get fit, because much of the wife's identity, as with most women in relationships, is being the "more attractive one".

    • @gotahgemini6415
      @gotahgemini6415 4 роки тому

      that doesn't seem the case here from the previous videos. It was his wife who continually wanted him to lose weight and get fit. Now that he is he seems to be building an ego. I hope they are still together though and that he stays grounded.

    This is the best series of this type that I have ever seen. Gary, you are a great motivation for myself and I am sure many, many others. The results that you have achieved, both physically and mentally are inspirational. I think that the friction that has developed with your wife is only natural and I am sure that it will work itself out. Keep up the good work and please, please keep these videos coming!

    Awesome to hear. In the words of Gary Roberts, "I'm going to change ME... and let's see if other sh!t comes together." :-) Good luck in your pursuits. Part of the challenge is just being around people that want you to succeed, and know how to get you there and that's what you'll find at a Crossfit affiliate.

  • @dragondare
    @dragondare 12 років тому

    Good on you for the results that you're getting Gary. And I'm going to echo the excitement on the new t-shirt too!
    I keep going back to the "I'm going to change my life...and let's see if other shit comes together". You can make your journey; you can't force anyone else to come with you. Maybe your family will want to do it, maybe they won't. But non-stop preaching will just alienate you further and further from them. Don't be that guy.

    It's a mixed feeling! It's both inspiring and discouraging at the same time! Here Gary is almost 3 months in, and the results is huuuge, but the episodes goes so fast, one would think he's still at month 1 or 1½ here. I've been sweating my ass off for 2 weeks, doing good work true enough, but man it's tough xD I want to be at month 3 too!!
    I re-watch this series almost monthly now, such a good source of true transformation and hope

    For some people here criticizing Gary cause of his reaction to people hitting on him, if you've never been fat or seen the disgust in girl's face as they tell you to "f@ck off fatty" or been told hundreds of times that "I don't date fat guys, they're disgusting" it can be hard to understand where he is coming from. Hopefully he won't let this change him but I'm not gonna bash on a guy for experiencing something that he never heard as a fat guy.

    A lot of it might have to do with his diet as well. He sounds like he is a really strict paleo eater. Since his body isn't storing fat as much and has it available for energy hes burning it off faster.
