Once, off duty, I saw an elderly man hit by a vehicle, and for a moment I completely froze. Even with all my training. I think it's something happening so unexpectedly, in a 'safe' environment. You are such an empathetic, caring soul and it sounds as though Ali was a completely hero x

Most hotels don't provide a steamer/iron because of safety reasons, not because they are "bougie"...
Just wanted to give you some food for thought: there are so many lovely bookstores around the UK which are struggling, please order your books from them instead of amazon. Now more than ever, we should support local/national businesses.

Irons are standard in every motel and hotel the United States. It was a shock to not have access to an iron in Europe
Interesting, I’ve definitely expected an iron everywhere :p I have had no issues requesting one when there isn’t one
What she was describing was definitely bougie. Standard hotels (in England at least) all have irons. If you're lucky you'll have one in your room. Most of the time you borrow one at reception. But you can ALWAYS use a hotel owned iron and ironing board in your room. What she is saying....is that some upmarket (otherwise known as "bougie") hotels don't expect that guest will want to iron their own clothing. So they don't provide irons. They provide an ironing service instead and charge (as she puts it) through the nose. It's nothing to do with safety. It's to do with, basically posh, hotels. Maybe it's different in your country. But here in England every Premier Inn, Travel Lodge, Ibis etc AND independently owned hotels have irons for you to borrow. 4 and 5 star hotels though...that's another matter.
Book wise “Where the Crawdads Sing’ is beautiful! It’s set in America countryside but the attention to describing the the plants and wildlife is extraordinary (the author is a botanist). Interesting story of prejudice, strength and will of good people too.

Lydia, I have been nursing for many years in CCU and dealt with many medical emergencies, but even with that experience behind me, when it happens outside when it isn’t expected, it still shocks you completely. I hope the lady was ok, and hope you are too.
I get so excited to plan and get ready for a trip. But coming home to “my” bed is so wonderful. Thinking it’s healthy to go off and when you come home you so appreciate it.
I always miss my bed and my pillows, when I go away too 😅sounds silly

Be super careful as deer have lots of ticks living in their fur and they could very easily spread to dogs if they are rummaging in woodland where deer live

Beautiful garden! My first year planting everything did very well and we had deer frequent our area.... they never seemed to touch anything... and then overnight one night they ate everything! Very devastating... when you spend so much time! They are beautiful majestic animals but can be also a nuisance!

I don't support Ascot personally, every year horses die suffer and die, they're often abused by their jockey and drugged. It's all about the money and many horses go to abattoir when they retire
That’s really sad but makes sense it’s all about the money.
I dont support any sport etc that involves the exploitation of any animal, its the same with greyhounds once they have served a purpose then they are cast aside

I highly recommend books by Rosamunde Pilcher. She wrote the Shell Seekers and many others set in the English countryside. They are emotionally so rich and grab you right away. Coming Home is one of my favorites. She is a beloved author and has been around awhile.. I hope a new generation discovers her. Love her!

I think anything that happens like that puts you into immediate shock and hopefully the sound was far worse than the effect to the poor lady. Very difficult to see and not reflect on how quickly things can change from a lovely day out to an emergency xxx All totally natural to feel xxx

FYI libraries are a great source for reading. In the US they are free in your town. Books, ebooks, audiobooks and ours have DVDs too. Just a thought 🥰
Love your videos Lydia! I highly recommend for books/authors, my favorite Kate Morton! She always sets her books in old English manors/castles/homes in the English country side and the home is almost like a character in her books! My favorites are The Lake House and The Forgotten Garden

Everything looks great; the garden and your greenhouse! You have quite a bit of fruit, you can make some preserves (jams, marmalades, etc.) to enjoy in the autumn and winter. You can even try your hand at some essential oils with your lemons, those are lovely to have when it gets cold.

The blue hat is so stylish, just perfect. Lydia I love Brit Box , I have it on my phone and tablets, we watch them at night on our patio and pool. You must like romance books, I am a mystery girl. Your garden and green house plants look wonderful. The lemon trees are gorgeous, I tried them here in NW Pennsylvania in my family room that is 3 walls of glass. They did poorly.

The deer is just bonding, wants to hang out, I have always had deer around where we have lived in the past. What a beautiful addition to your back yard zoo. I’m jealous. Once deer realize you are no threat will probably become part of your background. If they start eating plants, can plant marigolds around, as they don’t like the taste. But then again I have never met a BRITISH deer, so maybe yours would eat the Marigolds.

Dear sweet Lydia, your kindness and concern are so evident, not to worry about being in shock, it's ok. As a(retired) nurse there are many kinds of people in the world and we all do our best, sometimes people will run over to help and other people are in shock, and that's totally ok. When bad things happen, people will crowd around and with the best intentions, they get in the way. So, sometimes it is best to stay back.. I hope the lady is alright, it is a frightening thing to witness.
My Grandad is 93 and has always been super proud of his veg patch but like you said, as people get older it becomes more difficult to maintain so this year, by Dad and Uncle have covered over the veg patch with small stones, and have installed giant wooden deep vegetable trugs that enable my grandad to plant and harvest without the need to bend as they are built perfect height for him. Weeds will be easier to keep down and he is absolutely thrilled with them! (He still has a very small ground level patch for beans / peas to grow up canes) Just a thought if Ali's grandad would benefit from a similar idea ;-) xx
Deers are peaceful animals and they won’t pick up a dog and take them. I live in Texas and I have them all in my back yard and it’s beautiful!!! Your blessed to have beautiful animals in your yard

It’s just so traumatic when these things happen. I once saw someone die in a car accident and I think of that person all the time.
Your lettuce bouquet made me laugh.. we are currently experiencing a lettuce shortage in Australia. I saw an iceberg lettuce day ( a very small and sad looking one )for 12 Aussie dollars. So this kind of flower arrangement would be fantastic for any Aussie right now!

Hi Lydia! For more books flipping between ages, in england, I highly recommend books by Kate Morton! My favorite is The Clockmaker's Daughter, and I've also read The House at Riverton and The Secret Keeper. She has more books that are similar but they are great, little mystery and crime-ish.
House at Riverton and Distant Hours are my favorites. Clockmaker was good but I found the historical plot more interesting and wish she'd Don the entire book on that rather than back and forth.

The book - Ice queen is a mix of history, recipes and love it’s beautiful
We have a king shepherd & eac morning for past couple of weeks and doe has came to the fence and visited with him. They walk the fence line and after the first 2 days, they are very comfortable with each other. Yesterday morning she brought her two twin fawns to meet him and it was the cutest thing.
We have to fence all gardens or they will eat everything. We have also found various
Natural sprays they dislike that we put on ornamental plants that seem to work well. It’s a bit of extra work but we enjoy all of our wildlife very much.

Deer can actually be very friendly and play with dogs. The only thing you need to be aware of is if there are babies nearby. The mother sometimes hides them in bushes etc until she comes back but is very protective. We get new babies in the yard every year who are absolutely adorable and usually have anywhere from 6, up to 12 or so at a time. Enjoy them but also be aware of ticks. ❤️

Hi Lydia all the way from the US North Carolina countryside. We have families of deer that live on our property. They like our lilies and blueberries. To keep them from eating your plants and veggies, spray this harmless deer and rabbit liquid fence spray. There are different brands out there. The scent keeps them away but it’s safe for all.
So sorry your experience at Ascot ended the way it did, I know how you feel, I am just the same. Just try to relax now your home and get lots of puppy cuddles xx

I recommend Crimson Petal and the White. 800 pages of beautiful prose and a woman’s struggle in England. Historical. This book was so good the author wrote a second one with about 6 different endings. All the readers ( like me) were completely mad with confusion of how her life turns out. That one is good too.

I believe deers only see sideways, from the side of their heads, won't see you straight on..that's why so many get run over when they freeze in the middle of a road...if there is a next time.. be visible from side of their head and perhaps clap gently.
Bravo Al for reacting so quickly and appropriately, you have good instincts and a cool head in emergency situations. We all react differently to emergencies, very often we freeze, not knowing what to do or not wanting to intrude or doing the wrong thing...

Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes is a book I think you would like. You may have already read it - was published in the 90s I believe. And it was later made into a movie. It’s a nice story with references to beautiful settings and great Italian food!
This is my fav book of all time.Nicky pelligreno series is a must read if you love everything tuscany💜

I had deer in my backyard and all over the neighborhood. They do get used to the humans, especially a backyard haven like yours filled with all the deer food you have planted LOOOOL. They used to come and lay on my backyard deck unperturbed! Beautiful to see them in the snow too. I live in Africa no (in the city) and I miss my home in the US and the deer....enjoy!

Hello Lydia! Your videos are always so inspiring 🥰 I wanted to recommend an author which I think you may really like - her name is Kate Morton. Honestly, all of her books are really good - if I have to start with one I would start with The Forgotten Garden.
We are hoping to go to ascot next year so I was getting ideas for hats, and I have to say, the hats on Etsy that I found were absolutely beautiful. I was a bit worried about how to do the elastic, definitely not going to wear it like my school hat 😂.

I would encourage you to buy your books from an independent bookstore, or even another big store. Amazon is so harmful to the book industry!
Amazon is hurtful to everything it touches. Mostly it’s workers. Jeff Bezos who owns it and Whole Foods has repeatedly lied about the animal cruelty that he is fostering. Horrible person. Not chic in USA to buy from Amazon at all.
Loved all your dressess & Etsy hats in this vlog. You can use lemongrass, citronella or both for the mosquitos, lemongrass cream, patch or candles are very very effective for bugs & flies.

Charles Dickens I am loving at the moment. So much wisdom, humour, philosophy, history, excellent story telling, set in Victorian England. I'm working my way through all of his works, just brilliant. Would start with Great Expectations.x 😊

Everything is so beautiful. I am not sure about getting this in the UK, but I use a Dynatrap out back. It uses a light to attract the bugs but there is not a horrible zapping sound. You can get them for half an acre or an acre. I originally bought for the Chiweenie :), because it kills the mosquitoes. Just a suggestion.
