    Hey Joel! Happy New Year! Lovely to see a roost box included in your bird boxes. Sparrows winter here in groups under the eaves, I'm sure having one of your boxes would attract many more birds keeping them snug and warm over the harshest winters. Hope you're all well, Best wishes.

    How high off the ground? Ideal place to set up (ok on trees, near bird feeders etc?)

    • @WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
      @WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton  18 годин тому +2

      Anywhere that is sheltered out of the wind and not so exposed. I’d aim for at least 2 metres off the ground to avoid cats/ground predators 😊👍 Hope this helps! ❤️

    The dowelling would be better as a more natural effect to reduce fatigue on birds feet. As someone who keeps parrots this is well known issue with a lot of smooth man made perches. One thing for v2 perhaps.

    Interesting idea but don't even think about using plywood outside. It will delaminate within a year if - when - it gets wet and will be needed to be replaced.

    • @lisagamble6503
      @lisagamble6503 3 години тому +1

      Perhaps that's the business concept that they'll need replacing every 12-24mths.
      For £45 people would want it to be made of Oak, that would last 5-10 years of use.With once a year maintenance, treating it with natural oil for protecting the timber (taken down and allowed to dry for a day or two with box open).
      Perhaps a further option could be having an outer skin of slate with pre drilled holes to attach to the bird box. Granted that adds further weight.
      Im just trying to consider ways the product could be made more durable.
      These are options you could expand on Joel. Sell the slate shell that can be applied to the plywood option.
      The Oak if treated with natural oil won't need the slate.
      Squirrel deterrents - add a metal surround to the entrance hole. Otherwise squirrels may chew around it to get in and make a den.

    Happy New Year! My balcony swift boxes are regularly used by Blue & Great Tits and House Sparrows over the winter. The entrance holes are at the bottom of the boxes so the birds have easy access. I do block some of the boxes in February because if Sparrows nest in them they make an almighty mess on my balcony but some of the boxes I leave open where there is a hanging basket underneath to catch the poo 😺 So I agree with Joel that it’s worth having boxes for roosting - birds do use them! And of course it’s also worth having nest boxes, if you have a suitable space.

    • @lisagamble6503
      @lisagamble6503 3 години тому

      Usually nest boxes suggest 4m above the ground. If you have a tree. Otherwise under the housd evaes. Or on a garage or shed. As long as cats can't access. Or construct deterrent.

    Question for you Joel..... i see the staggered in height perches make sense , but they're not staggered diagonally ..... won't the roosting birds poop on the birds directly below them ?...

      @@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton how about fixing little duvets to the perches or even a include a little heater powered by AA batteries ( rechargeable of course ).To provide info. on how to really help roosting garden birds respectively suggest you show ways of discouraging neighbourhood cats. I'm told, but haven't tried, a mixture of fish oil and anti-freeze is really effective, but it might be better to not suggest this. p.s. happy new year I'll continue to watch your videos as some of them contain good tips
