I was diagnosed June 2022, at the age of 40. I masked so well that I would lose jobs and fail relationships regularly but was seen as selfish and lazy, self sabotaging.
Thankfully my parents pushed me to get assessed after they remembered a few teachers in my junior school 1988-89 tell my parents to get me checked as they thought I showed signs.
It’s been such a relief to know why I was so anxious and depressed all the time, why I hated being around people but had copied their behaviour all day everyday to get by. I would hide in the toilets at my jobs for hours on end until someone came looking for me.
To know now what stimming brings me relief, when I’m masking, but that’s not easy to just stop doing, get help with managing money and life skills.

Good to have you on the team. A late diagnosis is tough, everything I thought I knew about myself I suddenly didn't and that was hard. How are you doing with it?

I got diagnosed with adhd at 40 after my teenager was diagnosed first. Both my kids have it. Although medication didn't work for me ultimately, having the understanding is sometimes enough, as long as I have my headphones on lol. Point is, it's highly genetic, so worth getting looked at if an immediate family member has a medical diagnosis.

Well can I say a very big thank you for bringing this subject up . And also many thanks Christine for continuing to bring the subject of Autism . I got my diagnosis 9 years ago , and it would be great if I can talk about this subject on main stream TV , with now famous people with Autism . All the best . Simon x

I have good so good at masking for years I can't get an official diagnosis as the doctors keep turning me away I struggled all my life, also grew up with an eating disorder
So nice to know people are becoming more aware of the disorder.

I’m waiting on a diagnosis and I’m 32 and have two girls with 1 diagnosed. If I’m honest, I hate having autism. I know I’m autistic I tick every box and I actually hate the way I am. If I could take it away I would. I really struggle to say I’m proud of who I am. I’ve struggled all my life and I still do and so why would I be ok with having autism? I wish I never had it.

Hang in there Jade because this changes after you get the diagnosis, although not over night and in my experience it was up and down, I’d do well for a while then fail and hate being autistic but now, several years later I am fully accepting of my autism but unfortunately my family aren’t, so I’m currently working on coming to terms with having no family - the only way I can be in my family’s life, including my only son, is if I mask and I won’t do that anymore, so I’m currently going through the emotions of that but I’m not backing down because once you accept your autism you know it’s a beautiful thing and if people can’t accept us it’s their loss but in the beginning it feels like our loss but I’m not giving in and I’m confident that once I reestablish supportive daily routines I won’t feel that loss anymore. With time and effort you can not only accept yourself but love yourself as well and I hope you have at least one person in your life who accepts you because it is hard without that, but regardless, I’m not backing down because we’re just as valid as anyone else to have a fulfilling life X

Every school if you insist on it because they can’t not - if they don’t they’re not meeting the child’s needs but it can be a struggle but if you’ve got it in you to stand up for her rights do it but if you can get support as well because it could be a long and tough journey. The national autism site might be a good place to start with knowing how to approach the school, they have people you can speak to who can give advice
