  • Five days of spring carp fishing. For some reason, every time I get some new fishing gear I need to get skunked a couple of times before I get to test the new gear on a fish. This time was no different. More fishing videos, carp bait recipes, fishing gear list, and other good stuff linked below. Thanks for watching.

    The mucus like gel in your soaked tiger nuts is glycosylated vegetable protein chains Tom. The glycation of seed proteins is very noticeable in tiger nuts when soaked, same goes for chai seeds. Its purpose is to protect the seed from pathogens when it starts to germinate. HTH.

    • @OutsidewithTom
      @OutsidewithTom  4 місяці тому +4

      Thanks for the info. Well, I just spent the last half hour reading about glycosylated veg proteins and seed mucilage. Today's word of the day is mucilage. The research paper I mentioned in the video is linked in the description. While they didn't specifically mention the slime in the paper, since the tiger nuts are so high in starch I assumed it was just starch. Based on what I've read, my current understanding is the seed mucus is primarily made of polysaccharides, with starch being one of the main 3 polysaccharides in plants. www.mdpi.com/1661-3821/2/4/19 . I wasn't able to find any reference to glycosylated veg protein chains in relation to seed mucilage. It seems like starch is the right answer. Am I missing something?

    • @OutsidewithTom
      @OutsidewithTom  4 місяці тому +5

      Upon further reading, I did find reference to glycosylated proteins. It appears the composition of seed mucilage can vary widely among different species, with varying concentrations of polysaccharides, glycoprotiens, pectins, etc., but mainly polysaccharides. "Generally, polysaccharides present in the seed/achene mucilage contain pectin, cellulose, hemicellulose and starch, varying in combinations and compositions across different species." www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.01.08.574694v1.full
      This is all technical biological jargon that the average Joe doesn't care about, but I find it very interesting. Thanks again for the information.

    Good stuff tom! This was like a carp fishing movie . Showing at times you will struggle. It might be the spawn or a plentiful supply natural forage. Once you fished through these tough times it makes the catching that much better. Congrats on the nice commons tom!

    Some FIB's put some grass carp in a lake that used to be awesome bluegill fishing when I was in high school. They ended up killing all the fish and starting all over. Screwed up the fishing that we had at the time.
    I used to live in Denver and they used to put grass carp in the ponds to keep the weeds down. They treated them so they couldn't breed. I would put a leaf on a hook and throw it out to them when they were sucking stuff off the surface and do pretty good.

    • @OutsidewithTom
      @OutsidewithTom  4 місяці тому +1

      Here in Iowa, the DNR stocks triploid grass carp in some lakes to control weeds. They're pretty fun to catch.

    I have been looking for new spots this spring and have been really dealing with boat traffic as well. Had a boat anchor on top of my bait pile a few evenings ago lol. Weird year so far.😊

      In the past I've had good success getting rid of parked boats by blasting some music on my phone. Whatever music you think might be most obnoxious to the guy in the boat. Some gangsta rap or anything in Spanish usually makes them take off pretty quick. Good luck!

    I've caught thousands of Carp in the past few years. When one comes along that doesn't put up a fight, it's REALLY unusual. I always take a look at them for signs of wounds, or sickness. Never find anything. Sometimes it happens, but not very often. Carp are battlers. Born and bred. Not sure what part of the country you're fishing in, Tom. But how often do you see Mirrors and Leathers where you are? On the Madison Chain (Yahara River) and Rock River in Wisconsin where I fish, they're not very common. I'll see 2-3 each season, if I'm lucky. Last year I think it was 4 (out of maybe 750 on the bank), and that was a surprise. I did catch one on Lake Monona 2 years ago that I think would qualify as a leather. NO scales at all, except a row tightly packed along the spinal ridge. Really neat looking fish. Glad I got pictures of it.

    • @OutsidewithTom
      @OutsidewithTom  4 місяці тому +1

      Mirrors are very rare here in Iowa as well. Out of hundreds of carp each season, I'll catch maybe one or two mirrors. I've never caught a leather.

    Hey Tom,
    Do you like this 9 foot ugly stik elite over the catfish version of the same rod? I know you have the 7 footers for cats. I have a 6’6” medium heavy ugly stik for carp and the fight on that is way more fun than on the 8’ catfish series medium heavy ugly stik. I did pair it with the 5500 Okuma Bait runner like you mentioned. I might return the 8 catfish and grab the 9 foot elite if you think it’s a worth it for a more fun fight. Cheers, brother!
